Is GT5 worth buying a PS3 for?

NO, The ps3 has a tonne of amazing exclusives, compare this to barely any on 360 now. If you just buy for Gt5 you will miss out on Uncharted 1 and 2, Metal Gear 4, Demons Souls, infamous, Killzone, Resistance, MLB The Show, Little big planet, God of War, Heavy Rain, socom, Ratchet and Clank, motorstorm, etc.....

If you don't have a bluray player, then it's worth it. If you like/interested in any other PS3 game, then it's worth it. If you are looking to spend money and have everything else you need, then it's worth it. If you are a huge car fan, and it seems like you are, then it's surely worth it. If PS3 had only a single game available for it, GT5 and no other games, and had reliability like a 360 then I'd not buy it, but I can tell you, I own both systems and I have to say that I haven't touched my 360 in about 2 years, since PS3, like they say, does pretty much everything. So go for it.

It isn't perfect, but it never was going to be. For me, it is the best handling racer I have ever played. Photomode/replays have taken over my life at the moment and I love this game.

For me it is worth buying a PS3 for yes, when you get all premiums racing on a fantastic track there is nothing like it!

After much considering I decided that no, no its not worth my buying a PS3 to get GT5. That said, I have a good PC to play games as well and I have no real interest in other PS3 exclusives.

I tell my 360 friends who have and don't have a PS3 like this. If you got a PS3 then it's definitely worth picking the game up. Don't expect perfection, I run down the good and the bad , then let them know it's worth getting it. Those who don't have a PS3 I tell them if you're running out to get a PS3 just for this game don't bother. If you want the PS3 for the myriad of things it does AND GT5 then sure pick it up by all means. I love some of the things it does outside the gaming universe. I really like GT5 but I don't feel it's a justified system seller. It is, no doubt many a PS3s are being bought for this game, just don't feel it's justified as one.

I really wish I could be among those here who say "I haven't touched my 360 in ......" but the fact that I was just having the conversation I typed above, last night, while playing Forza kinda speaks for itself. I wasn't looking for GT5 to be perfect, just looking for it not to give me a reason to keep playing FM3 and in that aspect it falls short. I guess that's why I'm kinda "ehh" about the game. I was really looking for it to be the game that has me and my group put FM3 down for good and go on to new and better things. But it isn't that game and that's what is really disappointing. We have been having some good times in NASCAR with the game but that's a specialized form of racing and I don't think absolutely everyone is thrilled about it, although we all do participate in the events.

We have a formula that's a proven hit with our group and it seems like it's going to be difficult to pull it off with GT5.

When I bought the PS3 back in 2007 was mainly for GT5, that as you might know has been posticipated a couple of times...in the meantime I enjoyed some really nice games like MGS4, Uncharted and of course Gt5 Prologue (well I also spent a lot of time on Gran Turismo HD to be honest!), but 90% of the time ('till GT5..) I've used the PS3 as media center/extender and it would be worth of it just for this.

The "funny" thing is that my bluray drive died on the Thursday before gt5 came out..ps3 broken less then a week from the reason why I got it three years ago!! Fortunately I managed to purchase the replacement part and fix it on Tuesday, one day before GT5 came out ;)
Well, for me even completely ignoring the mediaplayer stuff, the ps3 is a must-have just to play gt5, which has its flaws for sure, but still is the best simulator on a console..

You have a DFP but no PS3 or GT5? how odd...
Anyways, there is a thread about people buying a PS3 JUST to play GT5

Not really odd. I bought a DFP for use in PC racing sims about 5 years ago. At that time I knew nothing about wheels and bought because of the low price. The DFP works well on the PC as a low-cost wheel. It is not so hot for GT5 due to large deadzone and weak FFB. It is still much better than the gamepad for me!
:)

anyway...GT5 has a lot of potential! I would say buy the PS3/GT5 combo!
:)

I have a 360 and love it to bits, i love everything Microsoft have to offer (Kinect, better controllers, user friendly consoles/games). But i really wanted to get this game.
$800 AUD later, i have a Logitech G25, a PS3 320GB slim and GT5 waiting for me under the tree.

I will probably only use the PS3 for racing games, mainly because it lacks in things like party mode online.

Don't forget MAG. IMO, that game is outstanding if you want to virtually kill stuff.

If you're a car guy, like car magazines, oogle when something rumbles through an intersection, and can withstand the SPEED broadcasters to watch a race; you absolutely need to own GT5.

An AK is HOW much? Given their construction (plus the fact that there are enough AK's in the world for every third person (I think?) to own one) I would have thought they'd be half that price, but hey, I don't own any guns (except an airsoft replica of the MGS1 Mk.23...) at all so what do I know?

A PS3 is useful for many other things than just GT5, so with that in mind I would recommend it to someone who only wanted it for GT5, if they'd get use out of the many things a PS3 does. If I had more than one TV, there would be a PS3 under each one... Maybe. Well, that's an exaggeration, but they are very useful.

I was kinda in the same situation, my ps3 broke around the time of release but I was never a big GT guy however I love cars. I ended up getting a ps3/gt5 bundle free with the sony tv I bought from best buy. Personally I love the game but the decision is more down to how much you think you will play the game. Aside from gt5, the ps3 also substitutes as a great blu-ray player and has many other excellent games.

Yeah. While my leanings are more towards Sony than MS, I'm a pretty evenhanded console guy. I've never been a one-brand zealot. I've pretty much always had all of the competing consoles, and that remains true today. I've got a PS3, a 360 & a Wii.

Sony's exclusives are leaps and bounds ahead of Microsoft's.

Unless you HAVE to play Halo or you wanna play specifically with your friends who ALL have 360s, there's very little to recommend a 360 over a PS3.

That being said, I'd find it pretty difficult to recommend a PS3 solely for GT 5. It's most definitely NOT the system seller that some of the previous iterations of the series were.

But THAT being said, if you're a gamer and haven't experienced Uncharted or LittleBigPlanet or ModNation Racers, you owe it to yourself to get a PS3 and check them out. :)

I bought a PS3 for it and a Logitech DFGT as well. Then turned around and bought a PWTS. All in all a rather large investment but I am not sorry I did it. I am a little dissapointed with some things about the game but it is a great game and I have been having fun and will continue to have fun for quite some time. Even more so if they give us credits and xp for online racing. If they also put in the ability to race our created courses like we thought they were and give us some good leaderboards where we can post times in tuned cars then I will be thrilled with the game.

Without the online credits and leaderboards though there will always be something missing.

People talk about the standards or the shadows or some tearing. I could care less. The game looks good and plays good. The cars feel good and it is fun to drive. Just give us a way to earn credits while racing real people and some place to see how we stack up in our best tuned cars compared to other people and the game will be played for a very long time by a very large number of people.

It is worth the buy. Just buy GT5. There is so many things for you to say " I Like It "
If you like cars, you will probably like GT5.

A GT fan forum isn't exactly the best place to ask this question if your looking for a non-bias opinion.

That said, I've bought 2 ps3's for gt5. Once a little while before prologue came out (that one got pawned when I lost my job last year :( ); and one for the real game. It really comes down to how much of a gear head you are and whether or not your going to put the ps3 to any other use. The games not flawless, not like 3 or 4 was. It's still absolutely beautiful visually (driving around the nurb' in a cockpit view in 1080p is a trip it's so real looking), but besides that it's still largely the same as the previous installments. There's online play now, but currently no real reason to do so. For me, photo mode alone was worth it, but everyone's different.

This.

A car enthusiast will appreciate the game much better than a classical gamer.

Yes! I've only ever bought PS systems to play GT games. I bought the PS3 to play Assassins Creed and GT5P when it came out a few months later. The only two games I owned for a long while.

Last Christmas I was like you - I bought an XBox to play FM3 - the PD/GT5 delays were just too much to take. I still love playing FM3. In fact I'm buying the Ultimate edition to get all the DLC for myself for Christmas.

Make your choice and enjoy yourself.

Hey, you don't use your DFP on the XBox do you?! If so, HOW!?!?!?

So here's the situation. I've already got a Driving Force Pro(a bit outdated but still compatible) and a custom made wheel stand. So for full GT5 enjoyment I just need a PS3 and the game, neither of which I have. I have the cash right now though and I'm considering going to Best Buy and grabbing the GT5 combo pack. I don't care about any other exclusives on PS3(I'm sure I'll give them a shot eventually though) and cross platform games I will play on my 360 due to a close group of friends already on there and the(IMO) superior controller.

So basically what I'm saying is if I buy a PS3 it will be just for the purposes of playing GT5. I've been on here constantly so I know about all the flaws and positives, but I want to honestly know from those who have it, is GT5 worth $350?

NO!!! I would wait for Forza 4 and see how it is. IMO Forza does a better job making a race car drivers game because they set up actual scenarios and restrictions that challenge you as a driver where as GT5 only has a handful of challenging events. Also the AI leaves much to be wanted I find the biggest challenge so far in the game has been when you do have a somewhat close race they may hit you from the side and spin you or worse get you sideways and then push you for ever.

I bought my playstation in 2006 for GT5 I download GTHD as soon as it came out and didn't buy a game for the system until Metal Gear Solid came out. Then I bought prologue which was a let down and now I bought GT5. Is GT5 AWESOME yes yes it is. Is the game a complete waste since you can blow through the entire A-Spec game without breaking a sweat until you get to the endurance races?

PD Needed to have restrictions for all of the races and should have treated the licences the same as they did in previous games. I think they tried to make the game too friendly to young and incapable people when they should have stayed true to the hardcore racer and at least given them a hardcore mode.

In Forza you have a hardcore mode its called setting the AI to hard and sticking to the restrictions set forth for you. If you find that a race is too hard instead of grabbing a faster car you can reduce the AI strength that is the way to do it!

BULL CRAP, no one os forcing you to use an overpower car in races, use an equal car, its not hard.

They should provide us with limitations like a real race series would; limiting the amount of power, weight, drivetrain, tyres, street legality, aspiration... You get the idea. That way, having 'leaderboard cars' in GT would at least be expected. Unlike a certain system that aimed to equalize cars that are around the same PI rating ;)

The hard AI doesn't equal a hard mode in Forza. Not even in a stock car. It's more challenging than GT5 if you abide the restrictions, but you have to tie an arm to your back in both games to be challenged in the normal races.

It's other stuff that PD should 'copy' from Forza, in my opinion. The amount of events, for example.
I kinda miss the events where you had to drive unmodified cars against the same car driven by the AI. Not very challenging, but fun anyways :dopey:

ive owned the g27 since it came out. this past summer i bought a YLOD ps3, fixed it, and now the only game i play is gt5.

its definitely worth getting a ps3 for. and get a used one. no need to drop $300 on a console for just one game.

i got my ylod ps3 for 60 on ebay. just sayin

Just to update you guys, I bought a PS3 and GT5 last night. I got it from Walmart since they're giving out $100 gift cards with a PS3 purchase. So that may be a good route for others looking to make the leap.

Unfortunately I've only been able to play a couple hours due to work obligations, but so far I'm really liking it. I can't wait to dig into it again tonight when I'm off work.

Oh and now that I have the console I may as well try some other exclusives. Once GT5 starts to get a bit stale(hopefully that takes a while) I'll pick up some other games.

Not true. I'm here and if the question is actually "Ps3 for JUST GT5" vs AK-47, I'd be hard pressed to chose. Though I'm a gun guy as well as a car & game guy.

Personally, I'd buy an SKS instead of an actual AK. Fairly close and much cheaper. Then put the leftover money into a PS3. :)

Have you looked at prices lately? Any decent SKS is around $300. Or I can get a "certified"(to be free of defects) WASR 10/63 for $420 shipped. I'd much rather have the AK and it's worth the extra ~$120.

Wenn done! I also bought a PS3 just for GT5 and i'm really happy=) I hope you also will be:tup:

Yes. Here's what I did:
1. Target offers a free controller and $20 PSN card with 160GB for a limited time (few weeks ago)
2. My parents go and buy me 1 for Hanukkah
3. GT5 from Amazon.com
4. Level 10 and rising!

I got the PS3 in fact just for GT5. Like I got the XBOX360 only for Forza 2, 3 and Race Pro..

I love racing, and I don't really care whether it costs money to play the games. Most games I got on PC tho'. Like GTR2, GTR Evo, LFS etc

I bought a PS3 and GT5 two days after the game was released. There are currently 5 other games sitting beside my PS3 and not a single one has been played yet. But it didn't hurt that my father had just bought a new TV, and that I only had 3 days of work left until I was laid off for the winter. Free time and spare cash are a terrible combination.

I hadn't played anything in the GT franchise since GT2, other than some GT5P at a friend's house.
