Is it just a matter of time until GT gets the F1 licence, or will it never happen?

I mean, it seems F1 teams really love GT. Ferrari has had F1 cars in 3 GT titles, and Im pretty sure theres none in Forza. Red Bull apparently wanted to be in GT5 so bad they found a loophole in the FIA agreement and made a whole new "Futuristic" F1 car. Jordan also said in a news post from the Launch Party that a F1 team rep said they "desperately" wanted to be in GT5. Im implying this is McLaren, as Red Bull/Ferrari were already in, and a McLaren rep would be there for GT5's inclusion of the MP4-12C(unless anyone can think of another F1 team that would have been invited).

I would have thought GT getting the F1 licence was impossible just 2 years ago, but then again, the teams apparently love it, GT5 has gotten the NASCAR licence(which I never ever ever ever thought would happen) and WRC licence(another FIA championship). GT also has a couple F1 circuits already made in Suzuka, Monza, Nurburgring GP, Indianapolis Road Course, and Monaco. F1 seems to mant a standalone multiplatform game though, ex. F1 2010(aka buggy mess). But, then again, sony has held the F1 licence before, so itll know how to get it again. PD will have to add more tracks though, due to the wineing now trademarked with the GT community, and the "Give a mouse a cookie, hes going to want some milk" idea. So PD will need to make Spa Franchorchamps, Silverstone, Hockenheim(with the old set-up as well, of course), and maybe even the eye candy tracks as well such as Singnapore, China, and Abu Dahbi. All which is a lot of work, which will take lots of time and resources from other parts of the game.

So do you think PD will get the F1 licence in time for a GT5 dlc, GT6, or will they never even get it? Or will they not want it due to the time and perfection f1/gt fans expect? Do you even want gt to have it?

I read codemasters only has the license through 2011. That doesn't mean they will lose it though, F1 2010 was well received. Sony Europe actually did have the license back in 2006. Also at many points FOM licensed to multiple groups so theoretically they could have had it now, but maybe because of the long absence of F1 games the FOM wanted the focus to be on one title for now.

Its tough to speculate really.

in time for GT5 dlc? Doubtfull.

PD and Sony already had the F1 license, codies has it through 2011 or 2012, and expect to extend to 2015 according to rumours.

Also, its not the first time a NASCAR car was in the GT franchise. In GT2 you could race modify a Taurus SHO to look like Mark Martins 6 car.

Really??? Off to the land on forgotten games to check this out!

It won't get the licence because PD have no intention of including an in-depth F1 sim within a Gran Turismo game. The way it stands is Codemasters make a dedicated F1 game directed at F1 fans and I doubt Formula One Group (who own rights to all things F1 related) would want their product being used as a sideshow in a driving game that's focus has never been on formula racing. The licence they sell will be exclusive and unless PD are willing to make a stand alone F1 game, they'll never be a viable option.

Interesting thread but is it me or is the title a little contradictory?

It reads like "It's inevitable it will happen...IF it ever happens..." :)

Think of GT5 like a track day/ amateur race game where you have access to all kind of cars with no official rules and you'll be satisfied. If you want the whole experience of certain racing league (F1, NASCAR, WRC,..) it's better to buy the dedicated game.

I dream about them getting it, but they must have had a chance when Codemasters got it, so I expect it to stay with Codemasters for years now. I just hope they can get classic F1 cars in there, or maybe GP2 or something. I would like more single seaters in GT5, cos it's the best handling I've ever experienced in a racer.

I read an interview with kaz somewhere and they asked about the inclusion of only 2 f1 cars, why not more etc. Kaz's response was something along the lines of "We did look at it but its complicated and expensive, we'll see *laughs*"

So its very possible and IMO likely, when though is anyones guess.

FIA has a huge ego and I'm sure they want nothing to do with being rolled into a game that has NASCAR racing in it.

Especially if that game only comes out once every 5 years and can not focus solely on how they represent F1.

Had a chance? Sony had the exclusive F1 licence for about 10 years! So why, since Sony own PD, didn't they put F1 cars in GT3 and GT4? Something to do with the exclusive licence agreement not allowing them to use any F1 related matter in anything other than a dedicated F1 game perhaps?

Problem is that it's not up to the teams to decide. As far as I understand it there is one man who controls F1, and it doesn't matter what the teams say.
Ferrari has a special position because, to be honest, F1 would lose a lot of attraction if there were no Ferrari's on the grid.

Sony may have had the F1 license before, and they may get a chance to buy it again at some point, but I don't think they will ever get it for a game like Gran Turismo. I mean, look at NASCAR and WRC, they are not exactly accurately represented in the game. With the broad perspective of racing that is the trademark of Gran Turismo I doubt that they will be able to put together a Formula 1 series that can hold the quality for an F1 licence.

But to answer your question: If GT ever get the F1 licence, of course it's just a matter of time. But will they ever get it? I don't think so. The only scenario I can see is that (some) other teams get the same freedom as Ferrari to give away licences for their own cars but I don't think they will ever be used in an F1 series in Gran Turismo, because they will never get the licence to use the F1 brand.

I doubt that we will see any dlc tracks, weren't they supposed to take like half a year to model? I'm sure PD have better things to focus on. Like GT6 for instance...

Indy Car perhaps? Kenny Bräck FTW!

Would love to see GT5 get F1 cars in the game. Would hate for PD to get an exclusive license to it unless the license has some VERY strict requirements for exclusivity. Say what you will but Codemasters did a very good job for a first effort at F1. Since they have F1 2011 and 2012 locked up we'll see how it progresses. But I don't see PD putting in the same effort as evidenced by how NASCAR is implemented versus the way it was advertised.

Exactly.. This is why the NASCAR inclusion is such a failure. People assume including a motorsport would also include the rules, tracks, and options that are the norm for that sport. GT5 only included NASCAR 'skins' in the GT5 game and has nothing close to what could be called a NASCAR game within it I doubt F1 would let that happen. I hope they don't anyway.

..Well, you had to have GT2 Version 1.0 to get Mark's car. Versions 1.1 and 1.2 had a generic version, but I think it was still #6. We speculate that Mark Martin's team had some sort of monetary deal with Sony/PD, which fell thru.

Nice pic, btw. ;)

i would be really happy if they got the license just for the chance to snag some old F1 cars. can you imagine the historic F1 car championship? it would be even better!

Thats why my friends and I love GT. Almost any racing series we want to drive on we can!

Formula 1- Ferrari F2007 and Ferrari F10- Cote de Azur, Autodromo Nationzale Monza, Nurburgring GP, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Suzuka

WRC- Citroen, Suzuki, Ford, and Subaru WRC Cars- Level Editor Dirt tracks

IndyCar- Formula Gran Turismo (Not a Indy Car, but all Indy cars are Hondas, so a pack of these is very similar)- Indianapolis Motor Speedway

WTCC/DTM- Pretty much any touring car- Autodromo Nationzale Monza, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Laguna Seca, etc.

Super GT- Nissan, Lexus, Honda, Lambo, etc. Super GT Cars- Suzuka, Tskuba, etc.

24 Hour Endurance- Any LMP Racer- Nurburgring, Circuit de La Sarthe, Daytona Superspeedway

NASCAR- Any Chevorlet, Toyota, or Ford Nascar- Daytona Superspeedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway

D1- Blitz D1 Drifters- Dont know any D1 tracks

Rally Raid- Mistubitsi Pajero, Toyota RSC Rally, etc- Level Editor Dirt Tracks

Pike Peak- Suzuki Esquedo- Level Editor Dirt Tracks (or according to Red Bull, Pikes Peak Itself)

Jesus, just looking at this, why all the complaints about GT5?

*DO NOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION*

If they Sony/P.D obtains the F1 license then they can scrap out their fictional formula GT series race.

Why would I want PD anywhere near the F1 license? So they can not pay a considerable amount of attention to it like NASCAR, WRC, and Super GT?

No, thank you. Let someone else helm the license if Codemasters doesn't maintain it after the end of this year.

Erm. NASCAR is still a member of the ACCUS last time I checked. Just because they don't adhere to specific FIA rules, doesn't mean that NASCAR and FIA are not friends. IF FIA wanted to have nothing to do with NASCAR there would not be races on FIA regulated tracks, such as Suzuka (Past) and Montreal (Present).

I'd rather PD didn't bother going crazy getting the F1 licence (and I definitely hope they don't get an exclusive one), because I've already sat through piles of hype for how amazing it was supposedly going to be when they officially got the WRC licence (end result: the least amount of rally events out of any game in the series, excepting the original), the Super GT licence (end result: a few standalone events rather than the 5+ race championship of every previous game in the series, plus with entry restrictions that are absolutely alien to both the current Super GT regulations as well as those of all past JGTC seasons) or the NASCAR licence (end result: a couple races and a handful of events that are absolutely nothing like a NASCAR race).
Basically, the now-legitimate WRC and Super GT races in the game are significantly worse than the not-quite-licenced stuff that was in previous games, and the NASCAR stuff is so hopelessly underutilized that they might as well not have bothered.

Also:
Problem is that it's not up to the teams to decide. As far as I understand it there is one man who controls F1, and it doesn't matter what the teams say.
I think this is inaccurate to an extent. The GT games could never call any races in the game Formula One races without the Formula One licence (and for all the difference that makes, see the Formula Gran Turismo races in GT3, GT4 and GT5), but I'm pretty sure that PD could easily broker a deal to get actual honest-to-god Formula One cars in the game anyways, with the only corollary that the cars would probably be sans sponsorship unless secondary deals were also made (and then again, maybe not that either).
I mean, other games have managed to include one or two legitimate F1 cars without the F1 licence; and not having the WRC, JGTCT or DTM licences (as a few quick examples) hasn't stopped PD from including cars from those series as well (including sponsorship, except where void by law), or from including racing series and events for those cars which mimic the races that those cars actually competed in.
