Same as PSN but I dont use it.
hey guys, I was with my friend the other day and he told me that they stop making a ps3 version that can read ps2 discs. ( i think is the one with 80gig)

Is this true?

Yea, kinda sucks but then you can just play all the great PS3 games that are coming out by the truckloads. I'm just glad I got my 60GB launch PS3 with the hardware for BC.

Because people are still buying/Sony is still making PS2s. BC on the PS3 is pointless from a business standpoint.

Plus it wasn't perfect performance anyway, its better to run your games on the PS2 (even PS1 games).

Exactly, why pay more for a PS3 with BC when you either have an old PS2 or can get one for dirt cheap?

Well i was actually thinking along the lines of people who do want a PS3 that can play PS2 games. It makes the most sense to force people to buy both consoles, making them spend far more money than if they could just buy a PS3 that plays PS2 games.

Sony has to be making close to 100% profit on PS2s right now, because it's such an old technology. I'm sure they've covered all their costs in bringing the console to the market.

Well I purchased the 60 gig with hardware compatibility, and while I'm glad I did, I never play any ps2 games on it. I played GT4 a few times, but it honestly looked better on the PS2, so I just didnt even bother. Im so spoiled with next gen graphics now anyways, I dont have a desire to play any of my PS2 games.

Yeah same :)

Unless you have a US or JPN 60GB or 20GB PS3 it is not using PS2 hardware, and is all done via emulation as shown below....

Taken from here.

Also, I have a UK 60GB, but the emulation isn't all that great on some games, and most of my PS2 games require a PS2 with "extras" to run. ;) So I keep my PS2 setup.

Also avoids putting un-nessesarry stress onto the PS3 laser if I use my PS2 for PS2 games.

Mines a HK 60GB (CECHA01) so luckily it does have the hardware on board, although I don't really use it.

Well I live in Canada but I am assuming I got the same 60GB version as the US. I don't really see any reason why it would be different between US and Canadian versions.

Is it NTSC? If so yes it is same as the US 60GB.

now I have a question. you know there is a flashback mission in metal gear solid 4. you can play it with actual ps2 graphics and screen mode is changing too. How does it happening? and if its the same thing that software emulation does can other ps3 skus play that mission? if the answer is yes than all ps3 can play ps2 games?

I haven't played it but from the sounds of it they simply programmed it with old skool graphics.

I don't remember a PS2 portion, but there is a PSX portion. And yes all PS3's can play PSX games.

yeah I've thought so but it says 60GB NTSC has emotion engine (hardware emulation) PAL verison has software emulation. It seems tricky :/
