It's bigger than the olimpics because we get decent coverage in a sport that we want.

Olimpics are a hogepog of stuff, most of which we couldn't give a S*it about.

If we're going to go silly - to me, sport's all about hitting a ball with a stick. Doesn't matter if it's a golf club, a cricket bat, a squash racquet (not tennis - how can you be punished for hitting it TOO far?), a baseball bat - gotta hit it with a stick!

Motorsport's a bit of an exception...

i think it is. its just a low scoring game and gives a bunch of wankers an excuse to trash everything if their team loses.

no flaming, just state an answer.

Oooh. Here is an idea! Try starting a thread on something (sport or whatever) that you DO like.

And for the record, I like :soccer:
As well as most sports (american and otherwise).

I got to go to a Arsenal v Derby County match this year in England and that was a dream come true since I have been a fan since I was small. I'm just gald you weren't there. ;) I live in the middle of the U.S. of A. and I am an avid Soccer fan (just ask MadeinHolland), but also dig up on tons of sports.

Also, What is a wanker?? I played American football and soccer until I was well into my adult years, and I was just curious if I am a wanker?? I have been a lot of things. :D
What makes you think you aren't a WANKER???

Basically an ass....

Wanker means exactly what it says.. (wanker =wack "off" er)

theres 2 meanings. 1 is the one where you beat ya meat and the other is an idiot. i meant wanker as idiot.

the wankers are the ones that trash their cities if their team loses. they really are both wankers.

As opposed to US sport, where the city of the winning team gets smashed in celebrations?

Huh? Got any stories? I assume you are not talking about college kids roiting around a block near their campus?

Football is cool.

Going on the sheer weight of opinion (it’s the most popular game in the world, next closest contender is probably cricket due to the Asian interest) it has value but is it overrated? Dunno, here in England no matter who you are and what team you support / follow you can be sure of finding common ground with almost any other average bloke in the street.

Over rated??? Matter of perception, brings hundreds of thousands of people together with a common interest that crosses boundaries of religion race and nationality once every four years. Millions of people with a common interest, a game so simple that it can be played by anyone of any age almost anywhere, yet a game so complex that team cohesion and tactics can make the difference between a good team and a great team.

It’s growing in it’s appeal as well, the emerging African nations and nations from the Asian sub continent are fielding sides that regularly trash respected European and South American teams. And look who’s been doing well in the world cup, the good ol’ US of A.

Over rated? Matter of opinion…… Just dunno……

Couldn't honestly say, haven't seen many (any) American shirts in the pubs but America is discussed as a serious contender now. More than just a little bit of concern about inviting you over for "friendly" matches now. Christ only knows what sort of a team you'll be putting up in another 10 years, as 10 years ago you only got in because you hosted the cup.... look at you now!
