I've heard some members recently saying "dirty air" has been introduced in that latest update. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I have heard about this, and I have raced in a few online races since the latest update. I cannot say for certain as I may have just been imagining it, but the car I was driving did seem to understeer more whilst sitting behind cars...

PD, to my knowledge, have not released any information saying that "Dirty Air" is in the game, so I still doubt it is.

What is "dirty air" ?

It's a racing term, the idea or mention of it usually means that your car isn't handling as well as it could be in "clean air" or rather if it wasn't behind other cars. The car may not have as much aero grip or handling due to the air coming off the car in front of you. Well that's the simplest way I can put if, I'm sure someone else will get more technical if you'd like.

Primarily in F1, it's turbulent air that has been all chopped up by the aerodynamics of the car in front - it stops your own aero package from working correctly when you're follwing a car closely with a view to getting past.
Can't say I've noticed it at work.

Dirty air... isn't that how Goose died?

I haven't noticed anything like this. Granted, I haven't played in a bit, but still. It makes sense, I guess, although it kind of contradicts slipstreaming a little. Anyone know which is stronger, slipstreaming to get faster as opposed to dirty air killing your handling?

You have considerably less downforce when youre in someones slipstream

I highly highly doubt 'dirty air' is coded into this game.

I think it's in, a few times I tried to pass cars after moving out of the slipstream under braking just as you move out to pass you will notice it. The car is pretty unpredictable at that point.

I have experienced dirty air numerous times, while ahead AND behind close racers. I felt it long before 2.0 but it is much more drastic at times now (almost feel's like I hit a oil slick sometimes). I've felt it in just about every very close race I've had for what I'd think has been at least 3 months. I only race Nür so I don't know if it affects on all tracks.

This.

In cars with high aero it's very noticeable. You understeer more and must brake earlier when in the slipstream. This has been in the game since the beginning.

This is REALLY apparent in the Mazda Furai! The 'dirty air' phenomena may have been put in without knowing when they put in the draft coding... Simply decrease the air movement speed as you get closer

Gar529 thinks so, I was racing him and he could swear there was dirty air when I was beating him in several races. :sly:

There might be but its a teeny tiny bit of dirty air, not nearly as much as they experience in real life.

Gar529 if you havent met him is this guy:

Exactly. Go ahead and slipstream in a X2010, you go from practically glued to the road to almost lifting off. (Well, not that much :p) As for "choppy air" I don't think there is any.

I've never seen anything indicating turbulence in GT. Extended braking distance in the draft is due to reduced drag more than anything.

The introduction video to Jeff Gordon's NASCAR School mentions dirty air, although he was just getting technical for information purposes, but I would guess PD may have at least tried to code it into the game. I can't say for sure I've noticed it or not, sometimes I would seemingly understeer behind another car while going through a corner but it may have been just me getting on a bit harder or a bit earlier on the gas to keep up.

Occasionally while racing FGT's I think I have felt it but its probably me just sub conciously trying to find an excuse for driving like a chump while trying to catch a tow :(
It probably doesnt exist in game.

It looks like you're contradicting yourself there.

Less downforce is dirty air.

Unless you're refering to 'dirty air' as a more complex thing.

Well, when driving behind a car there is less air surrounding u, which means there is no air that could press down the car while driving. U can go faster, but as someone mentioned before u have to break earlier because the air brakes the car more than u think. A normal F1 car, when lifting the foot off the pedal, has the breaking power of a hothatch...without even touching the brakes. Air is quite powerfull, imagine holding a small piece of wood out of a car that goes 60mph

Funny, I was talking to DrifterJoe about this just last night, as I think Homeslice, this is where you have got your question from.

Since Spec II, the only thing that has changed in respect of draft / slipstream (in my opinion) is the inclusion of 'weak'.

In a Chase event, 80 laps at Indy (in a NASCAR car) probably about 4 or 5 months ago now, I felt exactly what you guys are talking about, and even posted it to some extent in The Oval Tunery.

Early on when I was sitting in the middle or back of the pack (and therefore in constant 'dirty air') I hated my car, seeming very loose but with massive amounts of understeer (potentially contradictory I know, but that's how it felt). However, after pitting and finding space in front of me, my car felt hooked up tiiiiigggghhhhhht and with being pushed around, would just hold the line perfectly.

So, I think this has been in, if not from the beginning, at least from an early update. And, I love that this is the case. Do you set up to perform better in a pack, or out in front????

EDIT : Needless to say, I won that Race 👍

Well, there's definitely something. As mentioned above me, it's more likely not "dirty air". It's the lack of down-force. I think this game heavily weights down-force in its physics engine. When riding behind another car, your down-force is reduced because of the slipstream affect, or draft.

A good example of this would be in a spec race and you're trailing right behind a guy in a breaking zone or a high-speed corner. This is more apparent with cars that have down-force, but your car's braking distance will be longer than his, as well as your cornering radius will be larger . Make sure you're not drafting up to him. That will make the affect seem really weird because you'll be going a good 5MPH faster.

This is really apparent in one-make or spec races, where everyone has the same car. I was in a race last night where, repeatedly, I had to move my breaking points back 10m to avoid plowing into the guy in front of me. I find the better solution to this is to get out from behind the leading car, brake, and then tuck back up in behind.

And that's why you see a lot of cars with moving flaps

Somebody should make some sort of GT5 mythbusters, trying out minor things that are possible in real life (dirty air, fuel).

Who wants to join me for GT5 testing?

As far as I know, there has been since GT5P. When closely tailing a car, you're more likely to spin out or go in the sandbox.

This might be placebo, but I think I have noticed this phenomena as well. Loss of downforce when drafting behind another car, that is.

To the Top Gun reference, it's quite a paradox that the same phenomenon is causing planes to fall and cars to fly...

Good idea!! I have a few good cars to use!

Add me, when are you available?

I can run tests after I'm done with the 24h Nurburgring! Though my ps3 isn't online... I can test the effectiveness of air brakes on Monza!

It's been in the game for quite a while (though fairly weak), but I've noticed it much more after spec 2.0 .

Here's a placebo test. Try drafting in a muscle car through a turn.
