Is Using the Racing Line Indicator Considered Cheating?

I do not believe this gives the opposition an advantage on a well known track. If you on the other hand, take the track on for the first time, you will need it. From a realistic point of view, I try not to use it.
Have to admit, that for example on the nordschleife, I tend to use it on occasion. Only on the tracks that I am not familiar with or know by heart.

Just love the realism that is generated by a cockpit view, no donkeycrap on the screen (sometimes laptimes, but prefer not to have them on there) and a dark room with the audio turned up.

Whenever I'm hosting I always have it off and the majority of drivers (which is everybody) who has always relied on it always end up flying off the course during a tight corner or end up crashing into a barrier flat out and then they rage quit. I can only imagine if I were to actually compete with them at a real race track... The comedic value of comical proportions of hilarity would literally kill me.

But if you'd ever tried to race with others online with the racing line on, you would soon discover that everyone is trying their damnest to stay on that line even if it means ramming others out of it just so they can have the only advantage of using it for themselves.

Driving line, to use or not to use.

When to use it: Learning a course on a practice run.

When not to use it: While competing in a race.

On an interesting note, one can use racing line to drive Nurburgring at night with a car with no headlights (well, some what).

I don't know about online but offline I see it as a driving aid, it'll help keep you on the track but won't help you master it.
To be honest, I'm not brave enough to turn it off yet but I usually know when to disregard it.

It's making you slower so no lol.
I dont really like it tho, because people tend to follow it blindly and brakes at place I wouldnt even touch the break, or far too early on some tracks.

I don't think it's a cheating as it can be an useful tool to learn how to pass corners faster and where to deccelerate in approaching in each license test, but in races certain driving skills are also needed not only finding the best line to win I guess.

Why, it gives a chance for people to learn a track.

The line isn't really that good anyway, it's not like you'll go faster than everyone else if you use it.

The only thing is that you can't use it in real life (obviously), but drivers get a lot of practice in real life so I don't see why using the line is cheating.

It is in real life actually its called a sat nav  Just on a little screen ...

Its not cheating, they dont speed up your car they are there so people know where to go ... on suzuka i was so used to the small suzuka east course that when it comes to suzuka i still turn right after the 'S Bends' straight into the tyres ... driving line helps for things like that 👍

When I run my weekly race online I let people use the Racing Line if they want. It may not be perfect but if it helps people learn the track or race better then I'm all for it.

In terms of cheating, I don't really think so. It's not enough to offset poor driving skills.

The racing line indicator shows a good line to race with, but it's not the fastest line to take. So no, it's not considered cheating. Just remember to turn it off if you ever take videos of your driving and post it on YouTube. People love hopping on the "OMG YOU USE DRIVING LINE SO YOU'RE A NOOB LOLOLOLOL" bandwagon.

I use it, always. I don't see how it can be considered cheating when it's in the game.

noo i dont think its cheating either , if you dont know how to drive , use all aids , and stil like playing gt5 , thats ok with me.
i play my gt5 all aids off except abs-1 , and i use dfgt 8 ff settings , still i would like to see damage on a -spec because i think gt5 still to much arcade on it.

I know how to drive, I don't use all aids (99% of the of the time I just use ABS 1 and in some cars I turn it off completely). If I am considered an inexperienced driver I understand but most of the time I don't follow the line. I follow the line at the 'Ring, and at most difficult corners on tracks because I can't get them right.

By definition, cheating is to gain an unfair advantage by deceit or fraud. As such, I don't see how anybody could really liken the racing line to 'cheating'. It's a part of the game. It's turned on by default. It's an aid, an assist. As such, I think it's a good tool to learn a new track, especially when you don't know the layout or your braking points. And since it's dynamic in scope, it can be useful to help in some instances by queuing you in to braking earlier when you've picked up a lot of speed from slip streaming another car and need to brake earlier than you otherwise would.

That said, I recommend to turn it off as quickly as possible. For two reasons. (1) Because over time it becomes a crutch. You end up relying on it far too much and you tend to look at the racing line more than you do the track and the other cars around you. This is clearly seen by running a race without the racing line. People who rely on it are lost without it. They haven't a clue when to brake without a red light flashing in their face. (2) Because in real life, on a real track, there's no such thing as a magical florescent line painting on the road, telling you where and when to brake. You have to decide this on your own, using points on the track. And this can be done in the game as well.

In lobbies I run, I discourage the use of assists and in a way, I think the racing line is the worst of them. How can you have a serious competition with a big flashing line in the middle of the road? Learning what lines to take, when and how much to brake is all part of the challenge.

i just use it to give myself an idea of where to hit the brakes..because i have such a diverse garage of cars that adjusting to each one would just be too much.. not to mention i dont want to destroy one..

I don't feel guilty using it on the TOP GEAR track as I'd be lost as to where I'm going without it. Otherwise I can take or leave it. I should turn it off and try to drive the best line without it. Some complex sets of turns make you go batty trying to decide what line to take. And its my humble opinion you *can* improve on the exact line and stopping points. Its a good guide but not perfect.

It's not cheating in any way. I used it until GT Academy taught me not to rely on it. My immersion into the game is greater now and I think I'm faster.

Go right ahead and use it - not cheating. While you're at it, turn on TC (even to setting 1).

Both make you slower, more so TC, since the line isn't always the fastest; but sometimes is. You can get around a corner much quicker with TC off and the right throttle application.

Using the Racing Line Indicator is Considered Heresy!!!

Joke, play your game the way your want without looking or hearing lame complaints from others, play it for YOUR fun.

I have too much ADD to be able to focus on every braking point on every course and therefore the driving line helps me a great deal. I don't follow it's path exactly, but rather I use it to remind me approximately when to break. No harm done and not cheating in my opinion.

here's a contrarian POV to those of you who disable it in online rooms: i believe if allowed to be left on, it would decrease the amount of turn 1 pile ups since the new people would have an idea of when to brake. this doesn't solve the problem of the dumb dumbs who'll run you off the road regardless of course. the racing line won't turn someone who relies on it into a race winner, the people who know the lines and brake points in their mind will always be faster.

personally, I keep it off most of the time.. admittedly, night race at nurburgring, i sometimes wish i have the option to flick it on.

I have it on for 2 or 3 races on a new track, then i switch it off and keep racing on that track over and over again, this is my way of getting to know the track. This really works for me! If you keep relying on the racing line, you will never get the best lap times!

The answer to why the AI is rubbish is because they follow the braking points of the racing line. Do you want to race like the AI? ;)

Besides, in older GT games I'd just follow the black (oil and rubber?) line that somewhat mimics the blue racing line. The colors of the blue/red just distract me and take my focus and concentration away from what's ahead and plants it 10ft in front of the car... Definitely not the optimal way to race IMO. :)

I don't use it for the driving line part... I use it to help me with depth of field for corners... With all driving games I've always struggled on depth of field in corners... unless I've raced a particular course over and over tell I learned the course... Laguna seca from GT2 comes to mind. Being a family guy I don't have time to learn all of the courses like I did back then.

If it makes the game more enjoyable for you then use it, that is what all of the aids are for. not for cheating, for making the game more enjoyable for a wider swath of player... which in the end is a win for everyone.
