The interesting thing is that there's zero evidence to really prove he was driving but the publicity the case got ensured that he had to be found guilty no matter what. Perhaps he was but "innocent until proven otherwise" certainly didn't happen this time.

I'm sure I read that the police said that there was 0% chance that the man who died was sailing. (Which if there were only 2 people in the boat means that it could only be Jyrki). That's what I've read, anyway

It is a little hard to believe that with only two men on a boat, the former F1 driver wasn't actually piloting the boat.

Still, I have no proof of this so I can't back it up. Just going by my own experience. When I was a teenager, I was in the air cadets. During my time in the air cadets, I had piloted airplanes and gliders. Not solo, but I'd still done it. A few years later, I was on holiday with some friends and we rented a little boat with an engine. None of us had ever piloted a boat but I was the one my friends turned to.

Not hard at all - it was the dead man's boat. Järvilehto himself has said that the last thing he remembers before the crash is going to sleep on the boat floor and some of his injuries actually back that claim so it's entirely possible.

I'm not saying he wasn't behind the wheel, it's highly likely that he indeed was, but things are getting dangerous if people are put to jail based on what's likely instead of what's proven. In a normal trial a suspect is innocent until there's proof that they're guilty, in this case Järvilehto has been considered guilty right from the start and the defence has had to prove that he's not. The problem is that the prosecutor and the defence both have very little actual evidence yet the sentence has been given.

I've got huge respect for JJ after his exploits at Le Mans in 1995 (30seconds a lap faster than everyone in the wet :dopey:) but this has made me wonder. For me I hope he wasnt the one in control but you never know in these cases....

Wow. I sort of thought he was a cool guy, driving the BMW V12 LMR in Le Mans, driving for McLaren, wow. Just wow, unbelievable.

I won't pretend to know the exact details, but if it was truly his negligence that killed his friend then he deserves the punishment. I have lost family members due to this kind of situation. Hopefully he can sort his conscience out after all of this.

Now that's funny! Haha
It's not meant to be. Greycap suggested that because Lehto's case captured the public's attention, a guilty verdict was guaranteed. I disputed that because, as the Casey Anthony case proved, the public does not influence the verdict. Admittedly, these are wildly different cases - the prosecutors in the Casey Anthony trial charged her with first-degree murder when they probably should have gone for manslaughter - but I was simply pointing out that if Lehto was convicted, then he would be convicted by a jury of his peers, and not by public opinion.

I vaguely remember it. I was only 4 at the time, but I can remember Schumacher's debut.

I wonder how many other drivers have been arrested before. I know Tomas Enge got in serious trouble when he failed a drug test (he proved positive for marijuana), but I don't think he went to jail.

I know Hamilton had a few skirmishes with the law. He had his car impounded for speeding in France back in '07. And then he was fined for being doing peelouts in his C63 after the 2010 Aussie GP. I don't think he was ever taken in at any time though.

Well I was born in 97, so I dont remember Gatchot going to prison. It's important for me just because of Micheal's debut. But Kyle Busch got in trouble for speeding this year, Kurt Busch got in trouble for drinking and driving a few years back and lost his ride because of it, and Adrian Sutil stabbed a Red Bull mechanic in a chinese night club this year after the Chinese GP

It is and it isn't. His full name is Jyrki Juhani Järvilehto, but he shortened it to "JJ Lehto" to make it easier for all audiences.

prisonermonkeys
No, Adrian Sutil is accused of glassing a Renault team member, Eric Lux, in a Shanghai night club. It is yet to be proven.

Oh I thought it was s red bull mechanic

Who he did it to is not important, or even what he did. The important part is that he stands accused - he has not been convicted yet.

Not even close to that - Sutil hasn't even been chaged with assault, and you can't convict someone without charging them first.
