They're for idiots.
Alright, this could be fun. Post annoying JLeg quotes, and every time he uses it, have a drink, take a bite, throw a brick, whatever.

"On a charge"
"x from x from x"
"making a move"
"frustration"

I don't particularly hate the guy like most seem to, he has nothing on James Allen.
But I did find this version of bingo particularly amusing:

"Let's see what he can do, is this going to be good enough."

I actually like his commentary to be honest. Better than the likes of this:

"Ah!, oh!, wow!, uh!"

I get more annoyed when David Coulthard says "Absolutely...". If he did the race commentary, that would make a fun drinking game.

EDIT: I like that yellow Bingo card above; "A Brundle interruption" :p

Don;t forget that for the first 5 laps of the GP he usually informs you that the leader has set the fastest lap?!?!

C.

Take two fingers every time he cuts Ted Kravitz off.

Take four fingers if he cuts off Martin Brundle.

Finish your drink if he cuts Martin Brundle off when Brundle was saying something interesting.

That's hilarious. There were a few times early last season when the camera cut to an onboard of Hamilton stuck at the back of the field and being to slow to get near the car in front.

"Now, here comes Lewis Hamilton. What can he do from here?". Was quite annoying.

I'll scream next time he pronounces one word as two. Every Sunday he finds a way to slip "yester day" into his commentary.

I have no issues with what he says really, every commentator has his catch phrases and little issues. I just ask he quits watching the timing screen and watches the actual race more often because he tends to commentate on that instead, which can look a bit stupid at times.
Murray made loads of mistakes but love him or hate him, he made the sport exciting. Legard doesn't really have the same charisma or charm. Neither did Allen. James Allen was the opposite of Legard - very loud and very fanboy-ish. I honestly don't know which is worse, but I don't want James Allen back.

The only commentators these days that come close to that enthusiasm Murray had are possibly Ben Edwards and Martin Haven. Oh and John Watson!
The combination of Ben Edwards and John Watson on Eurosport in the 90s was excellent, just a shame it was during the golden era of Murray Walker.

It's very obvious that he used to commentate for radio. He needs to remember that we can see what's happening too. He seems to think that someone getting a purple sector is the most exciting thing that ever happens.

The fact us watching at home don't have the timing screens infront of us is annoying aswell. He does refer to the timing screens a lot. We only see the sector times if the camera is following that particular car. Sometimes it could be showing Webber on screen with his sector 2 time and Legard would say "Vettel just went purple through sector 1" and i'd be all confused for a moment :dopey:

(Does formula1.com provide the timing screen feed during race weekends? I'm not registered on that site so I don't know)

Yeah, but to counter that we have Martin "gronpree" Brundle.

Yes, we do.

Yes, it does.

Now why didn't anyone tell me this before? :dunce: :D

Now let's hope my internet is fast enough to stream the race and update the timing screen at once...

Yeah, that's quite annoying.

Murray made loads of mistakes but love him or hate him, he made the sport exciting.

Murray was brilliant though. I grew up listening to his commentary, so I may just be looking at it through rose tinted specs. I actually liked it when he made a mistake. There are loads of funny compilations on youtube.

I always loved the fact that he could never get Esteban Tuero's name right. And always had a problem with Olivier Grouillard. And who can forget the scream when DC crashed while entering the pit lane at the 95 australian grand prix.

Yeah, but to counter that we have Martin "gronpree" Brundle.

And (as autosport pointed out) Eddie "Michael Schmucker) Jordan.

You can't forget. "Oh its Tarquini, he's off!!!!"

I just wished they asked murray to come back for the british gran prix. How many people would want that. Anyway that is for another thread. :)

Oh, I wasn't saying Murray's mistakes weren't funny! I was just pointing out even the best commentators make mistakes.
Murray had a skill for making them really funny.

The moment that will always stick in my mind for Murray is:

He says crucial or critical alot.

"Oh, Raikkonens gone into the pits, now that could be crucial!"

"Oh, Vettel and Webber have colided! That could be critical for the championship!"

I also find it annoying how he tries to make everyones lap good. For example, if Vettel is 1 second behind in sector 2 as he crosses the line Leggard will go "Heres Vettel, is it pole? NO!" Well duh, he was 1 second off in S2...

The problem with Legard is that he doesn't have a passion for the sport, and lacks the required kind of knowledge about the technical side and driving technique. He sounds like someone who has just started watching the sport. And he is just a low grade of commentator in my opinion.

People seem to feel sorry for him with all of the negative things people say. But the point is you've got to look at it from a professional point of view, and he's clearly not up to the job.

On the topic, for me it's always a sign of poor commentary when words like "this", "that" and "there" are constantly used. A frustrating one to hear is:

"Here comes Mark Webber, out of that tunnel, into this chicane, round and down, pushing hard there".

He uses "here comes" far too much.

He is a bandwagon commentator isn't he-he jumped on the 'smoothly softly' driving style of JB last year, and still is.

Etc, Etc

The 'from' rubbish particularly annoys me, he could use the normal term 'then' or he could say nothing at all and list the drivers as they come.

I think he's fogetting we can actually see whats happening on the TV, this isnt radio Legard!

I wish Martin would talk more often because he always has useful and insightful things to say plus makes very few mistakes about whats going on.

Robin.

No, James Allen made me turn my TV off. I can at least ignore Legard, I cannot ignore screaming of this magnitude:

Please do not bring him back.

He has the same problem as Legard - forced enthusiasm. James was trying far too hard to be the next Murray Walker, he was way way OTT.

Aside from the fact he mentions the Concertina effect 2-3 times a race? I find him more annoying than Legard at times.

Agreed.

I prefered James Allen, at least he was passionate.

He was also ridiculously biased. I remember during the 08 german grand prix Massa forced Hamilton wide to make an overtake stick. Allen said something along the lines of "Ferrari must be questioning whether to keep massa for 09. That was a dirty move". Not a direct quote, far from it actually but you get the idea. Later in the race hamilton made an identical move on massa. Allen was full of praise for Lewis.

Ridiculous.
