Why is it that whenever I try to use the keyboard shortcut for special characters (like the "ü" in "Nürburgring," which as you can imagine is not uncommon around these forums), I end up zipping along to some search page or the main forum page??

For example, "ü" = Alt - 0252, and the first "2" takes me to a page showing new posts, right as I'm in the middle of typing a post. The "5" takes me to a help page. If I type the four numbers quickly, like I usually do, the forum software complains about me trying to search twice within two seconds.

It's annoying, to say the least... :indiff: Is there a way to turn it off?

maybe just try the 3 digit ones (skipping the '0')? I used to have them all listed on a notepad, but i think I deleted them :indiff:

edit: not to sound stupid, but it could also be you're hitting the 'ctrl' key instead of the 'alt' key (I've been known to do that one)

here's a couple handy here:
ü - alt 129 (Nürburgring)
ë - alt 137 (Citroën)

further edit: upon reading the post below this, I realise the reason the hotkeys worked for me and not you is I tend to write things on a notepad & paste them in when I'm done :S

There's no way that I'm aware of to disable the hotkeys in vB3, and I'm not going to remove the Javascript, so unfortunately you may be out of luck here. Here's a quick run-down of all the shortcut keys available in Mozilla Firefox. I have never been able to get them to work in Internet Explorer.

This is going to sound like a dumb question...

Is there a friggin' user's manual available for this site? This is the first I had heard of those key combinations, and it makes me wonder what else I'm missing out on!

Except that they have nothing to do with Javascript. ;) Those are accesskeys:
HTML:
<a href="usercp.php">My GTPlanet</a>-
<a href="search.php" accesskey="4">Search Forums</a>-
<a href="memberlist.php">Member List</a>-
<a href="calendar.php">Calendar</a>-
<a href="external.php?type=rss2">RSS</a>-
<a href="faq.php" accesskey="5">Help</a>

Alright. Thanks for looking into it, Jordan. :) If there's no way to fix it then I can just continue the practice of opening Google or something in a new tab, typing the character, then ctrl-c and ctrl-v'ing it into GTP.

Which ones? The submit, preview, etc. shortcuts or the special character ones?

If you're talking about the former, hopefully there will be a way to turn them off, and a manual will no longer be needed! ;)

They hotkeys actually aren't even mentioned in the administrative vBulletin user guide, and there is not an end-user guide that I am aware of.

Brilliant! Those attributes were in the default vB templates, so I included them in my own, but I didn't know what they actually did. They certainly are easy enough to work with. 👍

Now that I know how they actually work, I see how I could enable them as a feature. But, it would require so many template edits that I really don't see it as worth the time and effort so people can include two dots above the u in Nurburgring. But, I did pass along this issue to the developers, and they may very well make this a "default" option in a future software release.

Me too...I thought I was going nuts, and I've just started calling that great track the 'Ring. I upaded to a the newest version of Firefox at the time of GTP8, so I thought that was to blame. However, Jordan's created Hotkeys for forum navigation, according to his post.

Alos, have you tried good old Windows Character Map? It's under Acessories, but it tends to be disabled on many computers I use lately. Type "charmap" in the Run dialog box, and that will also bring it up. You can cut and paste any character, or sets of characters you need.

I know about Character Map -- it's where I learned the shortcuts. :)

In any case, opening up some other page in a new tab, writing it there, and then copying and pasting it is just as fast, if not faster... :indiff:

Jordan, you&#8217;ve got an accesskey of 5 for the &#8220;Help&#8221; link at the top of the page. Would it be possible to kill that accesskey? I use ALT + 5 everyday so I can use a em or en dash&#8230; :indiff:

What special character are you trying to insert?

Well, I'm not going to change it simply due to the fact that if I did, I'd be setting myself up to change them around for everybody who wants to insert their special character of choice. Sorry.

ALT + 3 gives me the Mobile skin.
No, that's the print view.

I&#8217;m not so much asking for it to be changed, but I don&#8217;t think it would be a bad thing if they were scrapped all together. I mean, there are plenty of downsides other than keyboard shortcuts for special characters.

Besides that, who actually knows about or uses them? If I want to read the FAQ, I&#8217;ll be happy to scroll to the top of any page and click on the link. God knows it wouldn&#8217;t cross my mind to hit ALT + 5&#8230; :indiff:

I still get the Mobile skin thought
Eh, just forget about it...

Edit : Humm...you might be right, I must have mixed the 'print view' with the mobile skin, there are hardly any differences :dopey:
