I use mph, Where I live we use kph so I would have rather used that, but I only learned how to change it to kph 2 years after playing GT4, so now I'm stuck with mph.

In case anyone is wondering, do the following thought experiment: imagine the speeds shown in km/s instead (with the same number of significant digits as now) -- the speedometer would show 0 constantly, and you would know nothing about your actual speed.

????

I'm from new zealand and i don't understand anything about miles other than 100 mph is 160 kph or near abouts so i use kilometers as that what i use when going anywhere by car in real life as we have the metric system, miles per hour and it's gas mileage equivalent miles per gallon confuse the hell out of me. Whether your imperial or metric there should be a worldwide standard in all cars so u can decide whether you want imperial or metric on the dash in cockpit mode (premium cars only) not just the hud

Km/h because I'm used to it and it's based on the international SI unit for lenght, metre, which is the most logical and easiest to use in math - why everyone should use the metric system. 8-)
10millimeter = 1cm, 100centimeter = 1meter, 1000 = Kilometer, 10Km = 1 mil.

12inches = 1 foot, 3 foot = yard, 1,760yd or 5,280ft = 1 mile... Thank God I don't have to work with this system in my math.

Meters are more accurate.
How? This makes no sense as does your 'mathematics' answer.

I know the conversion from miles to kilometers but I prefer to go with the unit of measurement that I have my whole life. I don't have to think about anything when I look at the speedometer and see mph.

MPH as it's what we use in the UK, but I prefer using metric in maths and physics as it's more sensible and progressive. Imperial just seems to use random amounts of one measurement to make up another unit of measurement.

MPH because that's the standard in the UK. It's a real pain driving in the south of Ireland where they use KMPH, gets confusing when you've been seeing, reading and living in miles. I tend to use both metric and imperial for weight and more metric for volume.

And it would be the same if you used mm/h... you'd break your speedo.

It would be a pointless application in a road vehicle, however, which is probably why nobody is wondering... :D lol

Well, if you had a speedo with the same number of significant digits as now (3 at the most), you wouldn't.

Honestly, I think this is a useless thread.

Whether or not you use mph or kph is just a matter of where you live.
In the US for example, they use mph, so naturally, anyone who's from there are going to use that.
It makes absolutely no difference to the racing experience.

All this poll is worth, is giving an idea of the geographical info of GTP members.

I use MPH.
Canada went metric some time in the 70's so our cars are in KPH but in the game I prefer MPH.

I've read the entire thread and it is impossible for one unit of measurement to be more 'accurate'. It is impossible. A mile is a mile and a meter is a meter. Neither is more accurate at measuring distance...idiots.

If you measure the speed of a car in lightyears/h and display it using three significant digits, it will be 0.00 no matter what you do.
Can you really not see how a scale with elements closer together is more accurate when the number of significant digits is limited?

My argument stands, calling me an idiot will not defeat it.
And in case you're wondering about this idiot's background, I study physics and mathematics at Lund university.

The Back to the Future DeLorean does light speed. LOL.

If a car is going 100mph and the speedometer says 100mph it is just as accurate as the measurement of a car going 100kph with the speedometer saying 100kph. Accuracy is defined by the measurement being very close to what is being measured. A km being shorter than a mi does not make it more accurate and sig figs are unrelated to this especially in your ridiculous speed units.

Put it this way, it's ok if you are doing 8kmph, thats 5mph, but if you are going 4kmph, it'll show as either 2 or 3 mph, when infact you are traveling at 2.5mph, therefore kmph is more accurate.

BTW - I use MPH, so i'm not a kmph "fanboy"

No.
100 miles/h ≠ 100 Km/h.
If going at 100. Km/h the speedo will give the speed to an precision of three significant digits, but it will read 60. miles/h, which is a less precise measurement.

What if it's a digital speedometer?

I use mph even though I live in Ireland! I use it cos I'm used to watching Top Gear talking about 0-60 figures & top speed of such & such mph! Also ireland has only been km/h for a few years so was used to seeing mph signs & dashboards when I was a bit younger!

EDIT: By the option of both, do you mean at the same time or switch them around every so often! Only time you could use both is onboard a GT-R Super GT!

No.

Duh. I wasn't trying to say 1 km=1 mi. If that was the case one of the two units wouldn't exist. The difference between accuracy and precision was taught in like 9th grade. They aren't interchangable.

I know you weren't.
I know, but it's completely obvious (to me at least) that the guy who said accuracy meant precision.
