Hi,

Can anyone tell me do PD use laser scanning for their track creation. iRacing and rFactor both have tracks that are created using laser scanning data and would like to know if PD use or plan to use it for GT.

Jeff

I'm guessing that as well as GPS readings and surface grip factor measuring.

I guess so, It might not be all for every track, But i think most real tracks are. I also hear they go with CM measuring stick and measure every bit of the track ;) perfection!

I DL that rFactor track, haven't try it yet. It's first so far for rFactor. :)

which track are you talking about?
There are companies that have laser systems to map out large areas. I train with someone who works for such a company and their devices can be stationary, on a vehicle or plane mounted (or, in this case, sent to the recent Mars landing). Land surveyors uses this type of product to make a 3D grid of a plot of land, for example.

All PD need to do is drive around and let the laser map the terrain, trees or buildings, etc. They are even able to map colours pretty good now, too.

Cool stuff, but we only know that they use the lasers to map cars (it was used for the Art Morrison Vette, for example, including the underside), they have not indicated whether they do environments by laser yet, at least as far as I've heard.

Cheers,

iRacing is using laser scanning for every track, and rFactor currently has a single laser-scanned offering. It translates into an amazing extra layer of depth to the track surface, which makes the smoothness of tracks in other sims/games really stand out. It's also an extremely expensive and time-consuming endeavor, which for PD would involve completely starting from scratch on tracks they already have in their library from previous GT releases.

When I play rFactor I only use Easter Creek now. I find the other tracks lacking in that final layer of track surface detail which the laser track has.

I was hoping that PD were/are going to use laser scanning for their tracks as the immersion is considerable with a laser scanned track.
