In parallel to its 2010 race programme with the 908 HDi FAP, Peugeot Sport has been busy designing and developing the prototype that will defend its colours in 2011...

The 908 HDi FAP helped Peugeot build up an enviable record of world class successes, including the title in the 2007 Le Mans Series, a one-two finish at Le Mans in 2009 and the inaugural ILMC crown in 2010. "We have chosen 908 as the name of the new car in order to build on the wave of success with which it is associated," says Peugeot’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Xavier Peugeot.

"At the same time, this car fits perfectly with the brand’s modern calling. It mirrors the modernity that is dialled into the 408, which is in the process of being launched in Latin America, the 508, which is beginning to arrive in the dealerships, and the new 308, about which we will be going into a little further detail over the coming days. It also echoes the modernity expressed by our first ever diesel hybrid model, the 3008 HYbrid4. At Peugeot, we have always sought to associate our commitment to motorsport with the real world and with our model range. The name 908 consequently stood out as the obvious choice.“ Following in the wake of the 905 and the 908 HDi FAP, the 908 is the third car to have been developed by Peugeot Sport for endurance racing. And, like its forebears, its mission will be to extend Peugeot’s winning record at Le Mans which already features three wins, in 1992, 1993 and 2009. The 908 complies with the latest technical regulations and notably features a so-called shark’s fin engine-cover appendix. It is a closed-cockpit car, with four identical wheels, and is powered by a 550-horsepower, 3.7-litre V8 HDi FAP diesel engine. It means Peugeot Sport will be competing in endurance racing for the fifth year running with a diesel engine equipped with a particulate filter (FAP/Filtre à Particules). Since 1998, more than seven million HDi engines have been sold worldwide, helping Peugeot to earn a reputation as one of the biggest players in the realm of clean diesel power.

The 908 packs the same technologies as those employed for Peugeot’s road cars, while there has been close collaboration between the group’s engineers and specialists and their counterparts at Peugeot Sport to ensure that expertise in domains like fuel efficiency, respect for the environment and performance is shared between road cars and motorsport.

Looks similar to last years one but with new aerodynamics (large engine air-intake, mounted on top of the engine cover) and engine. :)

This isn't the 90X, this is a part 908 test mule. Alot of the body is new (lower engine bay, sides, rear wings supports etc.) but other stuff, such as the enitre front end is 908.

The entire front end is not 908. Look under the nose at the new inlets and brake ducts.

There is actually barely any 908 left, only the original design philosophy. There are changes all over.

It's still a work in progress. ;)

Still liking it.

The car looks pretty good and there will be a big overhaul for next season. Wonder what Audi will do.

I'm 99% Audi are still doing an open car, the only big change is that AMR are doing an open car aswell.

Isn't that 90X just a test hack of the 908, that's what autosport says. They're not even sure what engine they're using yet but this is trying out some of the new aerodynamic parts such as the fin and a new wing.

As for Audi, I understood they were still evaluating closed vs open depending on the regulations on air restrictors. I believe closed cockpits are allowed a larger one to compensate for the air conditioning the car must have.

It is also easier to do driver changes on open cockpit cars.

Yeah they used the 908 as a test dummy, just to test out the brand new aerodynamics on it to see if it works or not.

Note: This is not the final version of the 90X. It is still a work in progress. ;)

If anyone is attending to go there, please take shots of the new Peugeot 90X LMP1 and post it here, thanks. 👍

They won't. LMS regulations make shark fins compulsory for all LMP-1 cars. They provide stability when cornering, making it less likely that the car will turn over.

So, apparently Sebastian Bourdais is doing the entire ILMC calendar for Peugeot.

As a side note, anyone else think this will be called the 909 once it's announced tomorrow?

If the final car looks like the 90x, it's a lot more pleasing to look at than the Audi R18.

I just hope anyone besides Audi can take the crown at Le Mans this year.

I see nothing groundbreaking so far. Swan necks for the spoiler, the shark fin, roof scoop. It didn't look much different from the test mules. Note, I only caught the last 20 minutes or so, so I wasn't able to see what the nose looked like.

And when asked about the new car's potential over the winning 908, one of the drivers said "it's never easy to in Le Mans, no matter how competitive the car."

EDIT - I'm re-watching the parts I missed.

EDIT 2 - "To unveil the new 908. 5, 4, 3, 2 1. Here's the 908!"

EDIT 3 - Things might get confusing since ORECA is entering the old 908 for the full ILMC schedule.

Here's the 2011 908:

Wow it really looks like a major evolution of the car's design. I like it.👍

That color combo looks sick.

How much power is this car down by now compared to the 908? I heard the trend for LMPs now is that less drag is more important than more down force since the engines basically got downsized.

Aside from the shark fin I think it looks nicer than the outgoing car....

Their paintjob have gotten better over the year. The early 908 livery seems very unfinished....but the last 2 years they look much better..
