Luckily I have had no problems with my 40gb fatty (knock on wood). I need to hurry and back everything up just in case but I haven't heard about many of the 40gb's failing.
 
just try to keep it running cool (well ventilated area etc)
avoid turning it off just after the fans been going spastic.
avoid knocking it when its hot

but if it does YLOD, fix it then get a new one and transfer, its a temp fix.
 
Since Christmas is coming I'll offer you my slightly tuned Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie with 442 HP. Poor guy, i hope this never happens to me...

I think I'll get both!

Luckily enough my company sell heat guns so I'll use one of them. I'm great at taking things apart too. The less said about putting them back together the better though.
 
My Ps3 is doing something wierd with GT5. When it goes to "vaccum cleaner mode," it will only stay like that for a few minutes and then it turns off the "turbines." Usually, when some games force my PS3 to go into the "vaccum cleaner mode," it stays like that until it gets shut down.

Haha, nice gestures guys. I may set up an old used car charity shop for cars that other YLOD'ers can benefit from!

I should get my pre-order cars back though I reckon as they were through the store I think?

The weird thing is, given what I've been reading recently I half expected this to happen. I laughed out loud initially, probably shock and a sort of 'well you knew that was coming you muppet didn't you'!

Luckily I had recently transferred loads of stuff onto my external drive to make room for GT5. Except the game save for GT5. Of course.

mine does that too. I think PD is using every last drop of CPU power for GT5 lol
 
You should have repasted it first.

I can give you a 330 P4, but I demand a video with the "I need a new PS3" moment LOL.

Except for the part where the game save is copy protected so you can't move it from your PS3 to any of the other two.

I'm getting scared too, and mine escaped it miraculously while playing Warhawk 2 years ago. It's a small chance (not as big as getting a RROD that's for sure), but if it happens, well, you're :censored:ed. Really, what else can I say? Go grab a soda Charlie, if you pet your PS3 while drinking Sprite it'll turn green and blue again!
I do have an extra premium Honda Civic EK I have stored up, message me when you get a new PS3 and I'll send it to you (that's if mine's doesn't go too)
 
Can't you do a full HD backup from the XMB menu? That should copy the whole drive onto an external one
 
im pretty scared about this happening to me, i ahve an original launch model, but i have put a fan blowing right on my ps3 trying to keep it cool. i live on a dirt road, and the dirt is all in the air and the air is full of :censored:it so all my electronics get filled with dust. my ps3's holes are all full of dust i try to wipe them off as much as possible but it just forces it down in there. i dont want to take it apart to blow it out because if i have to ship it to sony then they wont honor it because its been tampered with. really wish i could keep my ps3 save.

Does anyone think that putting a fan on it to keep it cool would help, or would the strain on the electrical system in the room just make it more likely to ylod? (i have my fish tank, pc, fan and surround sound all in one room, on two power strips)

theres a way, all your saved data is still on the hard drive, i dont believe the YLOD is to do with the hard drive.

all your saved data is currently console locked, so putting it into another PS3 or trying to use it on another PS3 is useless.

this is why they have the 'Data Transfer Utility'

Except that requires you to have two WORKING PS3s. That's pretty hard to do when one just broke.

And I'm not even sure the Transfer Utility works on Copy Protected save games.

Oh man that must be hard.

I too have the same as yours (60 GB first-generation, because of the backwards compatibility - I play GT3, GT4 and GTA) and I never had any problems up to now.

But reading that the people have more and more problems just makes me paranoid? Will it happen to me too?
 
Can't you just transfer the stuff to a computer then..? Aw shizzle, I'm screwed then.
Having a fatty for two years won't do me much good.. D:
 
You can technically transfer your data onto an external hard drive and then transfer that data to a new PS3 using the Data Transfer Utility. However, there is still data that won't transfer over such as game saves that are protected (I don't know if GT5 is protected).

Also, it works better to transfer between two PS3's rather than an external hard drive and a new PS3 as it allows you to setup users, etc.

Same thing happened with mine, AFTER it came back from Sony repaired. Sent it back again. Got to level 10 with copious amounts of gold licenses.

You might be fine, but warning signs are if it spontaneously turns itself off and blinks red. This happened to me a few times, each with a decreasing amount of playing time before it happened.

I decided to backup my entire utility as that's the only way to save my data, but as soon as I plugged in my HDD and went to find the option before I knew it my PS3 shut off after 2 minutes and wouldn't turn back on again (YLOD). All GT5 data gone and my disc stuck inside it.
