Licence tests on a controller

IA-8, and most of the S Licence tests are absolutely destroying me. They feel easier than when the game was released but these feel like on the level of the Hamilton Golds on Sport. Is there a set of useful tips somewhere on the forum for completing these? Sorry if duplicate....

I don't know what else to say except keep at it and practice. I am at S-10 with controller on my PS4, and having away at it each and every night, have not completed a single lap I keep sliding off here and there, the only thing helped me was turning on the DEMO GHOST, by watching and following it has helped.
I want to at least pass the test and worry about getting gold later on.

Do you have a video of one of your license tests you are struggling with? I'm sure there would be many players here happy to point out how to better tackle them, but without knowledge of where you are going wrong, it is hard to start to give advice outside of generic stuff like, brake a bit earlier and have more patience on corner entry, setup for corner exit as a priority.

You could go and repeat the early B and A license tests to beat your own times to understand the fundamentals better and then apply better knowledge to the later tests.

I’ve completed all license tests on controller and some of them were fairly tricky (S-7 cough). In addition to the great advice above about breaking a bit earlier at big turns, I’d also recommend taking your hand off of the accelerator trigger for some less difficult turns, rather than breaking. You can shave some good time off by doing this in my experience. I also did this on some difficult straights (such as S-10 I’m wet) from time to time to help prevent me from spinning out. It might not get you Gold, but it should help you to pass all tests.

It’s possible to get gold on all of them with controller. A lot of it just comes down to your confidence or track knowledge. I think GT7 does a worse job teaching new players or breaking down the task than GT Sport with the narrated videos. This game just tells you to watch a gold time video.

S10 can be beat with TC5 and assists on max, steering sensitivity down to 3 or 4. It lets you abuse the wet eau rouge kerbs for more speed.

All License tests can be done with a controller without any assists aside from ABS (on weak or factory).

Really... Just a matter of repeating the same test over and over and try to see where you get it wrong. If you can break later, when you start to make a turn, when you accelerate out of a corner, if you can take a high speed corner flat out or lift a bit, and more importantly, getting a feel for the car you are driving.

It took me some getting used to the grip in S-7 and S-10, but as soon as I was able to put a lap together, I got gold on the first try I was able to finish. Had to do a few of retries to get it obviously.

One thing I've noticed on the controller vs. GT Sport is that stick movement in relation to the steering wheel is far more sensitive in combination with the tendency in this game to spin out more easily, requiring far more delicate inputs to avoid a spin. It's been bad enough that I've had to lock my thumb in order to make very gradual turning inputs while doing some of the tests. Not a very fun experience really.

I’ve noticed this too. The steering input is much more sensitive in GT7. I use motion control and in GTS I drove with maximum sensitivity but in GT7 I have just this week turned it all the way down and am finding it much better. It still feels more sensitive than GTS but it’s allowed me to be much smoother.

All licence tests can be golded on a controller with no aids, no abs included. Whether one wants to make life that difficult is up each player.

beautiful video but it doesn't show anything that can help like when you apply brakes, when you feather the throttle, that important stuff in the HUD display

thanks. I never intended it to be a guide how to beat the test, just that it could be done with no aids.

Here is a version with the HUD. I don't believe it shows anything more than what the demonstration offers, so don't know how useful it will be to you.

So I learned after transitioning to GT7 that I needed to hear the game. Sounds stupid, but I played almost my entire GTS career on mute due to kids. Anyway, you can hear when the tires are breaking loose. Unlike on GTS where tire squeal means you are finding the grip in GT7 its the last warning before the tires lets go.

Also have to be super smooth and gentle on the inputs. Throttle control is definitely gonna be a challenge to adjust to, but I'm slowly getting there. Lots of times in slower corners I'm having to half throttle for a short bit on exit just to keep the grip with the tires because full throttle seems to spin them up very easy.

Steering was also super smooth and fine adjustments. This game doesn't reward over aggressive movement like GTS did. And you'll find if you pay attention to it that a lot ofnthe cars have better turn in under braking than they did in GTS and you have to use that to your advantage.
Not saying it's easy, the moronic Mustang at Trial Mountain drove me mental. But I got there, got all golds and am on a DS4.

Also, a cheat for S-10 is to turn your exposure up to max, it makes the dry line easier to see. And be gentle, it takes a smooth lap to finish and get gold on the one, not a heroic pushing lap. I was coasting at 1/4 throttle and barely touching the steering to get it through blanchimont and still had a slight wiggle.
Good luck and good practice

I play with controller and managed all gold without too much trouble.
However, doing so without driving aids is making life too hard imo. The controller is an inherently limited instrument and requiring your fingers to do all inputs at the same time with perfect control I find cruel and unusual punishment in my experience.
So I drive with assists on, ABS, TCS and shifting on auto most of the time. Some tests require or need manual shifting though.

Done with a controller.

I’d suggest turning on the various Assists if you’re struggling - that’s how the “official” ghosts did those times. Personally I didn’t use assists until S10 since that seemed to smooth out some of the oversteer if I dipped a tire into the wet, and the racing line helped spot the dry line.

Just keep plugging away - I actually thought these were not too hard compared to previous GTs.

You need to tell us how you are strugling. Throttle control? Wheel sensitivity?

They're not that hard. I played all of them with a controller and apart from 2-3 of them, everything was easy, and the last one wasn't as hard as people were saying. I played with ABS - Default, TCS - 0 or 1 depending on the car, ASM - off and Countersteering Assistance - Weak.

Edit: spelling

I don't remember for which tests, but to gold them I had to keep changing the steering sensitivity, steering assistance, stability control, tcs and so on. For example some are better with sensitivity at 7, some lower or even -2. You have to play with those and see which one will give you faster lap times.

This has been helpful. It’s getting golds on the licences which is the issue not passing them.
The TCS feels a bit of a catch 22 at times because I feel I have to be so safe on high speed corners but it’s so much quicker coming out of corners with it on.
I’m also finding that as I gradually start repeating a test I’m moving the BB to max rear to get the turning under breaking happening.

I've got gold on all licenses using the controller. Some took some extra work, especially S-10 but I also use the Motion Steering as I find it easier to feed into and exiting the corners. I've managed gold on all missions too, including the troublesome drifting ones.
It can be done, just keep trying 👍🏽

I remember having trouble with IA-8 as well. Smooth is key on that one, but easier said than done on a controller. I ran that test to many time to count, before getting gold. I was a tenth away from gold forever, then out of the blue, I had a run that beat it by .5.

I use default or weak ABS, TC on 1 or off depending on the situation, with no other assist. Something else that helped me, was turning down the sensitivity to the max low. Steering input is too quick in this game. I really noticed this watching a replay, and seeing my from wheels constantly changing direction. With the lower sensitivity, I'm much smoother.

Done all licenses with DS4, all gold, but I managed also to get some diamond times with DS4 in GT Sport LH challenges.
From assist now I use only ABS on default, and TCS if needed (1 ussualy, for S-10 2)
It is needed to be more sensitive with inputs then in GT Sport.

Hi,I'm trying to platinum some last tests but I drive auto and can't get them since they increased the difficulty. Would you be able to help me through shareplay?

They did not increase the difficulty, they merely adjusted the times to match the adjusted physics.

Also, it would really help if you shared your own gameplay footage to see how exactly you go about the laps.

Plus, I'm a firm believer in doing the laps yourself than having it done for you. ;)

Thanks, I will try again and offset the display ghost to follow it.
