can someone tell me please why is manual transmission better than AT?
I guess it's simply because the AI selects when to up/downshift and is never quite optimal for any given scenario... Manual gives you full control... you will get the full benefit if you also take all driver assists off (steering/braking), and adjust the ASM/TCS settings to your driving style as well...
I find that the AI is usually sluggish in selecting the right gear, particularly when cornering... a good example of AT making life hard is when doing Cote D'Azur in an F1 car or the Toyota GT-One... in the slow, tight corners, as your speed drops, the AI will drop you into 1st, and as you accelerate out of the corner, you will spin much more easily... the only way to avoid this is not to drop down into 1st... something you will find quite hard unless you are in Manual... sometimes, staying in the 'wrong' gear can be very helpful if you want more (or less) grip, or you want to minimise wheel spin/maximise exit speed... you will almost certainly get faster average laps once you have mastered Manual...
It is also far more interesting to learn a circuit in Manual...
One disadvantage (if you can call it that) is that since every car (or even every set-up of each car) is different, you might need to take a couple of warm-up laps to 'learn' the gear changes on a circuit, even if you know that circuit like the back of your hand.... but once you've learnt it, you will be quicker... I did a 2P race against a mate, he was in AT, and I was in MT, and we both had identical stock TVR's... but I hadn't ever tried the combination of car/circuit in MT before and, over a short race of 3 laps, I didn't get up to speed fast enough to challenge him... however, had it been a longer race, or I had done a couple of warm up laps, I probably would have won...
edit: don't just take my word for it though... try it next time you play... you'll probably be surprised, and you will kick yourself for not making the switch sooner...
