two years ago i started running long distance because i was getting out of shape. i have run 7 half-marathons and several other shorter runs. i don't win or anything, i just try to beat my own personal bests. my best half-marathon time was 1:42:23 which was a 7:49/mile pace.

right now i am training for my first full marathon in January.

anyone else run long distance?

I did cross country for four years, and did a half-marathon last year. I haven’t run too much since then though, because college is way too time-consuming (and I get a good workout just from biking to classes :D).

Biking to classes? Don't be that guy.

I just started running a little bit, or at least I'm trying to. Maybe a 4 miler a few times a week. I'm hoping I get the time to train all the way up to at least a half-marathon or something.

No idea how fast I run or even if I'm running 4 miles, but I typically run for about 30-40 minutes, so I'm just estimating.

Mm, except there are many of us such guys. ;) UCSD is probably the most spread-out of the UCs, so a lot of people use bikes here.

See that blue line? That route takes me 7 minutes, by bike (and pedaling furiously) – it takes nearly 20 minutes when walking (even if I shortcut that bottom loop), and I have a 10 minute passing period, so, you know. Yeah. And that blue dot is my dorm, basically the furthest point from anything and everything.

I've never been able to run more than about 3 miles, but I blame it on my shallow lungs. For some reason, I can skate, though. Depending on my fitness, I'll do 8-12 miles on skates (45-60 minutes). If I were able to keep up my jogging pace for that long, it'd probably add up to 5 or 6 miles, which ain't too bad. I think running shakes up my stomach too much, and makes me feel not so great, so I don't much care for it.

Damn, I take it back. Please be that guy. The longest I have to walk between two classes is going up a flight of stairs.

Yeah, going anywhere here is painfully annoying. (Annoyingly painful?) Just by going to classes for two days, you get a week’s worth of exercise.

if it shakes you up that bad, it's because you aren't using proper form. you are probably bouncing up and down, you're head should be level at all times. it takes practice, but it is worth doing correctly. diong this also takes a lot of the jolt off of your knees too, not just your stomach.

Yup. I find that it’s usually easier to stay in form if I run faster. :) When you do a slower jog, you tend to bounce.

i have a 5K run in the morning. will post the results tomorrow sometime. i don't usually run short distances, so i'm not really all that fast. i will be happy with a sub 22 minute time.

well, my time was 19:29. this is by far faster than i have ever run, which leads me to believe that the course was a little short. either way, we all ran the same course and i came in 3rd in my age group (18 and over male). there were 60 people total competing. not sure how many were in my age group, but i know it was more than 3!:p

Hey, congrats! :) And I know what you mean by “short distances” – during a cross country race, I’d always wish that the course would suddenly become 10 kilometers long so that I could pace myself better. Damn fast kids sprint the whole 5 kilometers…

have a half marathon this saturday, will post results when i get them. this is more of a training run than a race for me. i am training for a marathon in january. i won't be trying for a PR or anything, just as long as it is under 2 hours will be fine with me.

well my time on the half marathon was 1:49:15. i wasn't planning on running that fast (8:20 mile pace), but i felt good and was feeling like i was taking it easy, so i kept going. i finished 9th of 16 in my age group and 71st of 264 overall. now i think i might be capable of getting a 3:45 marathon.

running another half marathon two weeks from yesterday, will post those results when that time comes.

Congrats! :)

BTW, over at Giles’s forum there’s an Aussie by the name of Vat_Man who’s been occasionally posting updates on his own running – might want to check it out.

thanks Sage for the link. checked it out. that guy is at a considerably higher level than me! well, my run is tomorrow morning. another training run really, so i'm just looking for anything under 2 hours. will let you know how it works out.

my run was Sunday. i was 601st out of 3069 overall. 77th out of 237 in my age group. my time was 1:49:55.6 which is an 8:23 mile pace. i was wanting somewhere around an 8:30, so i did what i meant to do. this was just a training run getting ready for my full marathon in January.
