Looking for a "More Competitive" race

you want a tough race?
get an opel spedster, put nitrous/fullracing suspention/full wieght reduction/tires if needed, that will still be a 200point race.

its easy if you want to make races tough, you have to be the underdog (less HP, less modifications).

The real question is how can you tell whether or not you're going to be an underdog in the race before you enter it? You have no idea - the race descriptions dont tell you about what the cars you're going to face, and even if you feel like you're on par with the other cars, it can STILL be a tough race (Opel Speedster). Balance in this game is pretty tricky sometimes. I tend to start with a car that is slightly underpowered and tune it up from there to a point where I feel comfortable with. Sometimes I overestimate and end up taking a stock car to a race and end up blowing away the competition, other times I can barely win with every upgrade I can stand to use.
I know that for myself, I need to improve my driving technique and learn better tuning, but the information that the game provides for tuning is less than adequate in my opinion, and I already realize how much better I am getting at driving, but I still have trouble with the uberfast cars (re: Toyota Minolta at El Cap for the GTWC - ended up in a violent spinout on the bridge, hit by ALL 5 cars behind me before I could get myself going, only won the race because the other cars pitted and I didnt)

This is exactly what this thread was supposed to be about!

This is why I always say that Gran Turismo 4 isn't "easy." You can still mod a car out to the max, but it all comes down to driver ability, tuning, and all that. Any half-wit can still beat Daihatsus and Subaru 360s in an Escudo. Looking for more competitive races? It's called the Gran Turismo World Championship. Even using one of the cars you'd normally get owned with, it still comes down to driver skill and tuning. Gran Turismo 4 is tough enough. Why make it tougher? Agree/Disagree at will, but even with me getting back into the GT series after playing through "GTA: San Andreas," even I still need a little more brushing up on GT.

In terms of races I've recently ran that was tough, I just completed the Hyundai series race. I had an unmodified Hyundai Tiburon GT at Autumn Ring Normal, and the results? I had a B-Spec finish of 6th, and an A-Spec finish of 4th. A-Spec points was 60. How much harder does the game have to be? What, to the point where it's unplayable? Unbeatable? Stop saying that all the time about this game.

I enjoy a more competitive race when I play GT4. I am tired of using a high performance car, and passing the competition in the first 400 meters.

At the same time, I hate picking a car that ends up being to slow, and doesnt even come close to the competition.

My question is: How can I predict a car to race with that will be competitive to the rest of the field I am racing? Some races, you have no idea what kind of cars you will be racing (i.e. "Gran Tourismo All-Stars) Do you always have to go into the "race preview" to see what you are going to be up against? That seems tedious, and sometimes you end up racing different cars than what was in the "race preview"

Is there a way to know what car to choose, so that the race becomes more of a challenge? I like winning races based on skill and decisions.... not by racing 500hp cars against 100hp cars.

Thanks for reading,

Lyle

Yes indeed im feeling also.
I am tired of searching for a competitive car :yuck: !!

Are you saying that the tires were the only mod? Or is that an add-on to all of the engine, suspension, etc. mods?

Add-on to everything else.:) With only the tires, don't think I can win then. Don't even know if it's possible then.:)

Hi, just thought I'd stick my oar in here......

I'm trying to do the game all a-spec and have lots of challenging races along the way (well as many as I can) and for those of you who like a challenge here's some events that I had great fun doing:-

FR Challenge - Ginetta G4, stock
MR Challenge - Renault 5 turbo, stock
K-car cup - Daihatsu Sirion x2, oil change
Japan Championship - ASL Garaiya, stock (watch out for NSX's!)
All Japan Gt Champ - Suzuki Gsx r/4, stage 2 turbo, r3 tires
Supercar festival - Spyker C8, racing exhaust
Boxer spirit - Subaru Impreza 22B, oil change, S3 tires
Dream car chapionship - Weds Sport Celica, stage 2 turbo
GT World Championship - Mercedes CLK-GTR, stock, r1/r2 tires
Speedster cup - Opel Speedster (NA version), wing, r1 tires
BMW M-Power Series - BMW M-coupe, oil change, S3 tires
VW Lupo Cup - Lupo gti, R1 tires

These are just the ones I remember the details for. If you want to be a bit more hardcore than just competitive series..............

Nurburgring 4h - ASL Garaiya, stock
Nurburgring 24h - BMW 320i touring car, stock, R1 tires
Sarthe 24h I - Peugeot 905 LM, 50kg ballast
Sarthe 24h II - Nissan R390 GT1

All these will net you big A-spec points as well, but that's just a bonus really.

Oh, if you're still looking for more challenge, then simply put worse tires on your car. N2's or N1's will make a big difference in those manufacturer cups.
Good luck and remember to make it hard for yourselves 👍 , because the game isn't going to do it for you 👎

I haven't found a way to know "up front" whether to bring a knife or a gun to the fight other than to go look at the preview and see what's racing there first.

Once you have done that, you can look around at the car lots (new and used) and get a feel for that range of cars you saw in the preview in terms of PWR etc. Pick a car in the low end of that range and take it to the dance. If at the start of the race it indicates 100+ points, you will find it competitive (least I do). Adjust your mods accordingly... (ie:tires/hp) for more or less competition.

More often than not, GT4 is like GT3 in that they programmed many of the races with a "tortoise" and a "hare" and there is no real way of telling how they cheated the hp multiplier of your competition until you are at the race, have raced it once or read about it on the forum somewhere.

This one is a challange that I m going to be working on:

'93 Skyline R32 GTR, tires and ballast only in Race of Red Emblem Twin Montegi. Seems impossible but with no errors i reckon I can do it.

wolf8218
another challenge... the alpine race with a stock alpine 330 i think.

Now that is a challenge in the 310... I had to get the racing suspension so I could harden up the rear and get some control of the butt end. Otherwise I was driving like a (as Old Geezer would say) "Drunken sailor late back from shore leave."

This might be in a completely different direction than your looking for, but you can always try the weekly race series or other online races they hold here on GTP.
Even though your only racing against the clock, it can help you improve your abilities. Technically you are racing against other people, which is alot more fun than the AI.

If you want a challenge, but you don't want to drive slower cars, then enter any LM(Toyota Minolta, Nissan R92CP, Toyota GT One, Audi R8, etc.) in the F1 championship and keep your power level stock. This will provide you with a good challenge, and you'll be going fast(you'll have no choice :) . I'm currently using my stock R92CP in the F1 championship , and I haven't lost a race yet(3 races so far). I'll have to do a write up on this series after I'm done. But it should give you one of the biggest rushes in GT4, if you try this method.
