I'm looking at buying a new car, budget limit is about $15000 CAD(Canadian).
  • $15000 CAD or less
  • Preferably AWD or RWD.
  • 4-door is preferred over 2-door but there is some lee-way.
  • 4 door - automatic
    2 door - automatic w/tiptronic or 5speed

Something like an Audi A4, BMW 318, Infiniti Q45, etc. Suggestions?

Thanks!:)

If you're more of an A4/BMW guy then perhaps the Subaru Legacy would be a better prospect for you. :)

But both are great choices...👍

Your criteria is largely going to lead you down a path either to a Subaru or an Audi, but I'll do as I always do...

How about a nice VW Passat 4MOTION?

I found a 2001 for sale in Ontario for $12,000. They are pretty solidly built cars with a fairly decent reliability rating, and more importantly solid performance both on and off road. Granted, it isn't the most extreme performing car available, nor the best 4WD model available in the market, but offers a good balance of things that makes it an attractive buy...

...Or if you would want to get a little strange and a bit old-school, I've always liked the old Volvo 940 and the later 960...

I wanted a 240sx but realized how old those cars really are. So I'm looking at atleast 1996 or 1997 year for the car. WRX's are expensive there over $17,000!

I'm in BC btw. I was thinking about Passat's but I'd rather get an Audi.

More than likely I'll narrow them down to a BMW or an Audi, not sure what model though. :s

Don't get a 318. Look '97-'98 328i, or '98-'01 A4 (either engine). All of those vehicles will be good.

Awesome. Would you recommend going for an automatic or a manual transmission?

Personally, automatic, as I'm an auto guy. In the Audi, Tiptronic is standard from '98 to '01. 2001 was the best year to get - it featured a horsepower bump from 150 to 170 on the 1.8-liter model. I'm not sure if that's in your price range, though.

I wasn't sure where you were from in Canada. I just picked Ontario since its closest to me...

...Anyway, the VW/Audi thing is more a personal taste thing and is largely decided by how much money you want to spend. At least from where I stand in the year range you're looking for, you could probably get a newer VW for the same price as an Audi with literally the same engine and transmission, but if it is prestige you're looking for, obviously the VW doesn't have it in spades as the Audi would comparatively have...

Is that a joke? haha.

Not really. Alot of people I know prefer cars like BMW's in manuals, just because there BMW's, that's why I was asking.

JCE3000GT, 3/4 of those cars are too old for me, I need something newer and reliable too.

The SC400, Supra, and 300ZX will outlast anything you buy today if maintained properly. Just because something is old does not mean its unreliable. I drive a 1990 Camaro V8 with 237,8xx miles on the original engine and she still runs like a champ. Finding something newer with AWD/RWD and some kind of funfactor is not going to be as easy as you think with only $15k CAD to work with. Probably would just be easier if you just bought a C-class Mercedes.

Many people do not like older cars, myself included. I will never buy a car that is more then a couple years old.

Then I have to say--nothing personal--but that is a narrow-minded view. What year is your Blazer? What do you consider "a couple of years old"? Some of the best cars ARE older cars. I would much rather have a car that's 10-15 years old in great shape than a new car. I've had 2 new cars back to back and I now choose to drive a 17 year old car that gets me from point A to point B while only costing me $30 per month of insurance.

How is that narrow minded? I have a personal preference.

The Blazer is a 2003 (owned it for four years in Feb.) with a little of 50,000 miles on it and I believe it's time for me to get a new vehicle. Although I probably won't get one till sometime next year since I'm going to be gone most of the summer and my truck will just be sitting here for a few months.

If I were to buy a car right now today it would not be older then a 2005 model and it couldn't have more then 20,000 miles on it, it would also have to come with a warranty that lasted longer then 3 months/3,000miles. But more then likely I would buy something brand new and as much as I wouldn't want to, I would probably buy a GM vehicle because a.) it has a 5yr/100,000 mile warrenty and b.)I get the GM discount. If I were to get that I would own the vehicle for 5 years, when the warranty was up I'd ditch the car.

I'm a big fan of warranties on vehicles, I used mine on my Blazer for everything. Anytime a trim panel was loose, there was a rattle, or any other minute thing I would take it in to have it fixed.

I've owned a few used cars, the one I drove the longest was a 1995 Plymouth Neon and I hated every time I got in the car. Granted I got it for $500 and it had 60,000 miles on it, so it wasn't like it was a bad deal, but I just hated driving a car that I new had been around the block quite a few times. I know what people do to cars, I don't want to inherit that.

And when my truck was brand new I was paying $90 a month for full coverage insurance, I couldn't complain about that. Full coverage on the Neon was $75.

is sportiness any factor? how big of an enthusiast are you?

i have seen a few really good advice bits. the 4MOTION passat would be perfect no matter what your need pretty much. but if you are going to get a sports car get a standard transmission. there is no reason not to. better gas millage (not always the case i know), and more fun anyway.

Did they sell an AWD version of the Jetta or the Golf in Canada? I know they had one on-sale in Europe that wasn't the R32 for some time, and I always thought it to be rather disappointing that they never shipped it here... If that is the case, I'm certain that one of those would be worth considering...

Oh, BTW, I wouldn't completely shut-out FWD models. Granted, I too want to go with RWD in my next car, but there are a lot of FWD models that are really good options... But, its your money, and thusly you're deciding what to spend it on...

I've considered 300ZX's and older vehicles, I was set on a 240 but I don't want to end up buying a car I know will need some money poured into it. If I bought a 300zx being me I'd end up wasting alot in making it fast etc. That's why I'm after something more civilized like an Audi A4. :D

Have you considered a GC8 Impreza? I'd suggest the 2.5RS's. I've seen 99-01 2.5RS models go for under 10 grand cad.
