Guys, im new here but wanted as an M3 fan to add my bit...
The M3 right from E30 shape in the 80's has been regarded extrememly highly, BMW have taken an already great car in each variant and turned it into a giant killer each time, they are the ultimate "Q" car, nice looks fabulous handling, legendary engines (the M power name is one of the best regarded worldwide finding its way into F1 motors and McLaren F1 road cars for example) and great performance, the original question was whats so good about M3's and the topic has gone off slightly, i think the above points and the fact that Mpower managed to achieve a power per litre of greater than 100BHP is no small feat of engineering. Add to that a package which is reliable yet will happily tootle down to the supermarket taking a family of five and luggage/shopping in supreme comfort its getting to be a no brainer.....
I would personally not compare the M3 to a Lancer EVO of any variant i have a lot of respect for both but i would imagine they were built with different briefs in mind.
I have not had the privilege of driving an M3 this is just what i understand from others and the motoring press here in the UK, but trust me its highly regarded.
