In the past, I think this question has been less difficult than today, in my mind, every single M5 ever sold, has always been superior to the M6 of the same generation (whenever there was one). Yes that even includes the last one, I think the boot of that M6 and the fact that the M5 grew on me with time helped for that gen.

And I mean, look at this beautiful new thing;

But then again, this is nice too...

I'm not sure which I would rather, when I saw that image, I though it could've been the new M3 it looked that good - one things for sure, they are both significantly improved over their predecessors, extremely superior.

So which one would you want? Easy poll, M5 or M6, maybe give a post as to why.

On a side note, it seems M coupes are now an orange colour, while sedans are a blue colour, might just be the M1 and M6 are that orange while the M5 is blue, but anyway (yes I know its really called the 135isM or something stupid, but we all know it should've been called the M1 despite the original coupe with the same name).

I was suprised on just how good the M6 looks, as the post-Bangle BMWs have been getting very, very ugly, the new 3 and 5-series in particular, so yeah M6 would be my choice, though if I was buying an M-car, I'd get an E92 M3, which just blows both these out of the water on looks.

I also was surprise about the M6 they just put out. It definetly flew under the radar compared to the m3 and m5 we are all waiting for. Didn't expect it too look this great! Theoretically this m6 should be faster. I think it is lighter than the m5 with the same engine plus 2ft lb torque. Rumour is a lot lighter that the old m6 BMW have not released any figures

F10 M5
Weight, unladen (DIN/EU) - 1870kg / 1945kg (4,122lb / 4,286lb)

F12 & F11 M6
Weight (coupe), unladen (DIN/EU) - 1850kg / 1925kg (4,078 / 4,243lb)
Weight (convertible), unladen (DIN/EU) - 1980kg / 2055 (4,364 / 4,530lb)

Don't have comparable figures at the moment, but this M6 is heavier than the old one as far as I know, I think the old one was about 1750kg and the convertible was pretty much 2000kg.

M5 or M6, hmm, my heart says M6, my head says M5,.. my wallet says eBay search "M-cars for less than a grand"

I really like both and the sound of the S63TU engine is just amazing for a turbo engine.
Even though I littlebit miss the roar of 10 angry and high reving cylinders :D
My choice old M6 against old M5 is the M5, only because of looks.
New generation, I would have to drive the M6 first, but I would say M6.
I like the shape of the F10, but it's a little to bulky IMO :/

M6 for both generations. The best looking M5 or even 5-series in general to me has always been the E39; the F10 looks too fussy for what it's supposed to be and the E60 was too bloated and in general, ugly. The old M6 I thought looked absolutely brilliant, as does this new one.

Pffft.

Btw, I must say, BMW is bringing back the "agression" into their design.

The new models are looking way better than the last few, who have more resemblance with beached whales.

M5. The M6 is no more than an M5 with some of the practicality removed. If i wanted a German built sports car, i'd opt for a 991 over a M6 every time.

I could have the M6 for looks, but the M5 has a bigger badge...

...so what I'll do is buy an M635CSi, just to annoy BMW.

You really cannot compare the M5 to the M6, as one is a sedan and one is acoupe, but if I were to choose, definitely the M6, either Post-Bangle or Pre-Bangle, as I HATED the "Bangle butt" and the "flame surfacing".....

Ha, well, from one E24 lover/owner to another I understand where you're coming from on that... but that wing, that stance, and those wheels --- it's like CGI in Star Wars episode IV: A New Hope.. it's a good idea in theory, but basically it's ruined something that was a classic in the first place.

Really? Sources on that?

It's commonly expected on BMW forums and blogs that the M3 will be a turbo 6, but the rumours range from a tri-turbo I6, to a shortend version of the M5/M6/X5M/X6M engine - which means a TTV6. Certainly nothing official from BMW yet, but I believe when interviewed BMW M boss said that they had/were testing a number of configurations.

My name says it all and everything says it all that I'll have the M5. I mean, it's no doubt the M6 is theoretically faster and should drive a little better than the M5 but it's not as practical as the M5 and I'm a big fan of sedan some more. With the M5, I can take people comfortably on board and stuff in the massive boot.

I'm not going to say much about both of the design because it's subjective but I say they're both great looking and definitely my kind of taste.

Probably ditching it for packinging. Don't Inline-6s increase the length of the car?

Yes, Inline-6 does increase the length of the car. They are going for packaging so I think TTV6 is very likely to be on the next M3...

I can't see them doing it from a size point of view, they've never struggled in the past to accomodate I6's in even their smallest cars, and still keep a decent amount of weight behind the front wheels.

Yes It would be a benefit for packaging, but most of M's experience with turbo's come's from setting them between the banks of a V engine, it could be that they are keen to use that design across the range - which would necessitate a V engine, and a 6 cylinder one to differentiate it from the bigger M's.

I kind of hope it doesn't end up being a V6, all my Bimmers have had an I6 engine, and it's one of the best things about owning a BMW in my opinion.

Back on topic, don't forget the M6 Gran Coupe (http://images.thecarconnection.com/med/2013-bmw-m6-gran-coupe-spy-shots_100378745_m.jpg) is on it's way, it'll combine the best of the M5 and M6, and have more power... so that would be my chosen option. :D

Speaking of turbo charging, it looks like BMW is going all out with the turbo tech. I think they advertise it more over Ford's ecoboost.

Then again, weren't these the guys that introduced turbos to F1?

No I think Renault did, but the Brabham BMW BT52 became the first Turbo to win the title - it used a BMW production 4 cylinder block and was capable of 1280bhp+ ... :D :D :D :D :D :D
