is this the Mclaren F1?
gt4p-bmwmcclaren-02.jpg

now it is down as the bmw maclaren but has it just been renamed so as to eliminate the need for licensing from maclaren?

First off, it's McLaren, not MacLaren. But renaming it as a BMW wouldn't eliminate the need for licensing, since the body of the McLaren F1 appears in the game, which is protected by copywright laws.

It's called the BMW F1 because most of that particular car was done with BMW parts, the only McLaren bit is the chassis, other F1 race cars were built by McLaren but the BMW run teans used their own parts, the engine is already BMW's so they could use that anyway. It's a similar thing to RUF although instead of it being a production car it's a race car so there are differences in the laws for that.

And that's a pretty damn big bit! The only BMW bit is the engine. All other parts were built/designed for McLaren. The car was run by Schnitzer, but it was the same as all the other McLaren GTR's.

Apart from the whole it was built by BMW not McLaren part, there were a few F1 GTTR's that were BM F1's because of this, although they stll raced under the McLaren F1 name they could of officially been called BMW F1 GTR's, look at it as an RUF of the race car world, the laws for a race cars badge are different to thoes of a road cars and this fell into the it didn't have to be called a McLaren anymore catagory.

Exactly. The engine was the only bit BMW provided (although it is a damn nice part). It is a McLaren, not a BMW. Shame they had to badge it as a BMW in the game.

It's identical the a McLaren F1 GTR longtail but it was put together by BMW motorsport, it can be listed as both according the the rules at the time that car raced, if it was a McLaren and only a McLaren there is no way it would be in GT4, PD would not be able to call it a BMW F1 no matter how much they paid BMW, McLaren still need to hand over a licence.

It was built by BMW, using variouse parts from BMW, McLaren and other companys.

It was originally built by McLaren as all F1's were.

Chassis Numbers 21R, 23R, 24R & 26R were built in the McLaren factory in 1997. They were raced by Team Schnitzer. The team was called "BMW Motorsport", but BMW themselves had nothing to do with the team. All F1 GTR's had the same specifications.

It must be remembered that the BMW engine, and all the other parts, were only built because Gordon Murray asked them to and gave them very strict guidlines to adhere to. So BMW, in this case, are only a supplier to McLaren.

Not every F1 was constructed at McLaren, ther were a couple constructed by BMW motorsport, they were among the last ones made, yes they are all the same spec, the parts are all the same, but because a couple were built by BMW they can according to the rules at that time be called BMW F1 GTR's. Most are McLaren built, but I think it had to do with McLaren ceasing production of the GTR's so BMW got the parts and built a couple of their own.

McLaren built :

7 prototypes
64 road cars
28 GTR
5 LM
2 GT
and 1 spare chassis
for a total of 107

10 of the GTR's were 1997 longtail versions. 4 went to Schnitzer, 4 to Gulf Team Davidoff, 1 to Parabolica Motorsport and 1 development car. BMW made none.

The long tail GTR's only raced in 1997 with the exception of 1 of the Gulf Team Davidoff cars that raced in 5 GT races in 1998 and 1 of the Schnitzer cars which was raced in the British GT series by EMKA racing in 98 and 99 and also took part in the 1998 Le Mans 24 hour race.

My source, "Driving Ambition - The official inside story of the McLaren F1" written by Doug Nye, Ron Dennis & Gordon Murray.

Hmmm, I have read about BMW building a couple of F1's though, odd. It could've been misinterpreted, or whoever wrote it could've been just plain wrong.

I love that book :D
McLaren F1 Chassis Numbers and details

It's damn fast too.

We got passed by on as we came out of The Chicanes at Le Mans and we were doing over 300km/h (186mph) in 1997(I think, could be 1998).

Sounded amazing.
