The title says it all. I'm waiting for the news to come back on, but it appears the Police made a major mistake.

I already heard that on news yesterday. They said the info was provided by SkyTV.

Still a horrible mistake. I wonder why and how did he attrackt the police.

From the similar thread in the Opinions forum:

I'm not seeing the problem here.

  • House is under 24 hour surveillance in connection with London Transport bombings two weeks ago.
  • Man leaves house, carrying backpack. Men carrying backpacks were, of course, responsible for the London Transport bombings two weeks ago.
  • Man makes way to London Transport station.
  • Police attempt to detain him.
  • Man flees police.
  • Man ignores 3 audible warnings to stop, or risk being fired upon.
  • Man is brought down by marksmen, shooting to kill, because in a public place they cannot risk hitting bystanders.

Remind me why this is bad again?

What do you mean Uh... Whoops? If you were that cop and it really was something serious and blew up everyone in the area whould you not be thankful?? :grumpy: This will sound bad toward the guy that was killed but ****, NOTHING is black and white for this ****.

Only major mistake I see here is by the guy who decided to outrun the bullets. Police were after the wrong person, but that's the only mistake the Police made IMO. Considering the situation in London, I think the Police shooting is fully justified.

Well excuse me for trying to lighten the mood.

The guy new the risk he was taking and i feel he got what he deserved. He was wearing a back-pack and a heavy coat in warm weather. He jumped over without paying and when police told him to stop he continued running. He had to know the consequences of his actions. What if he was connected and the police DIDNT shoot him, and he had a bomb on him that went off. What would you say about the police then?

Now see if this happened in America I bet everyone would be all over us, but since it happened in the UK its ok.

Anyways I think more cops should shoot first ask questions later. A few mistakes is far better then a subway station filled with dead bodies after a bomb goes off.

On the news, just now said that the man who was shot dead by the Police was an Brazilian national. Get this, he didn't speak English! :ouch: If the cops who were after him were all plain clothes, maybe... just maybe it was an unfortunate misunderstanding. If it really did go down like SS69 described though, I'd be skeptical. Also, anyone know if there were any uniformed officers present in the pursuit?

but why did they had to shoot him after he fell down. They could have aimed for the legs, and why did they had to shoot 5 times?

I do understand your concern. My guess would be a combination of the officers being given permission to shoot to kill and the nature of suicide bombing terrorism. But unless you or I were there in person, who knows?

The AP says he spoke English well. What kind of news were you watching?

"He spoke English very well, and had permission to study and work there," Menezes' cousin Maria Alves told the O Globo Online Web site from her home in Sao Paulo.

Because if he had a bomb, he could still detonate while on the ground. He had already made it onto the train, and the police had to be sure that he couldn't go for the detonator.

Local 11 o'clock news in Portland. I think I was watching KGW, which is an NBC network.

Edit:

I must've heard it wrong then. I just went to the TV station's website, and they have the same AP story posted. Sorry guys! :ouch:

Thanks for that dusty!(my nickname for you :D). Maybe I'm not going crazy after all.

I have'nt read anywhere that he was carrying a bag only that he had a bulky jacket and considering it was summer was "suspicious". Reuters But being Brazilian our summers are not much to worry about. Also it would seem the the place where he used to live(in Brazil) had a lot of violent gun crime.
Could it be that he was followed by plain clothes policeman and unable to correctly understand what was shouted at him (I don't always understand what people say to me if I am not listening to them) and seeing weapons pointing at him essentially "freaked out" and ran? Or if they were shouting "run, run" and knowing he was not guilty of anything he also ran.BBC There's no way of knowing I guess.

I wonder why the address was under surveillance? It would seem this inital intelligence was partly responsible for the events that followed (without it he would probably not have been followed). The question is where did this intelligence come from, was it reliable and did the Police act upon it correctly?

Interesting to see Mr Blair staying silent on this.

He could speak English and understood the police command, all armed police wear uniforms that consist of white shirts and black bulletproof vests with the words "Meteropoliton Police Force" labeled in the top left corner, the officers id no and division is labeled on each shoulder.

Cheif of Police, Ian Blair has already released a statement on this.

For more read the "london bombings" thread in opinions.

As pointed out elsewhere, which plain clothes policemen in the UK are armed, precisely?

Which will, of course be none of them. Ergo that report is false.

precisely
and i have nothing against what they did. better him shot dead than more of london down with him

I think the police done the right thing. They wern't to know that the man wasn't anything to do with the bombings and done the right thing at the time. What if they never shot him and he was a bomber, well... They couldn't take that chance.
