I was driving around Cape Ring Periphery the other day, and the auto box on the car shifted up just before the loop which left the car out of the powerband, and that made me think:

Games before GT5 have had the manual shift up/down override the auto box when they're pressed, so why can't GT5 have this function? I know I'm going to have a bunch of people come and say "Just use manual" but the fact of the matter is, I can't get used to it and forget to shift. It would be useful if the override function was available though, so you could correct the auto box when it makes a rare mistake.

What do people think?

You can get used to manual very quickly as I did ;)

If the overall automatic transmission in GT5 would work like it does in reality it would be much better to use. Some cars in GT5 have (IS-F) or should have (Premium Mustang) smooth gear changes and are modeled like their real life automatic counterparts except the transmission. Therefore it would be really cool if they would act like a real automatic when setting them to automatic in the driving options, with all the stuff like kick down - even GTAIV has kick downs...! - and manual upshifting (overdrive)... GT6 - all we can do is hoping.

If you want to override the automatic box.
Why not use manual in the first place?

I thought if you held R2 while in Automatic you kept in the same gear? Or was that in a previous incarnation of the game?

The auto box is pretty good most of the time, and I keep forgetting to shift down in manual for corners.

Just about every single racing game I've played up until GT5 has the semi-auto override option though... It's somewhat odd they left it out.

They still haven't fixed the slow gear changes issue with the 905.

That was GT4. (not sure about 1-3 though). It was useful for getting a few extra mph in the speed tests.

I really wish they would bring this back. I would use it in GT4 so I wouldn't get that lurching motion when I hit the top speed and it automatically kicked me down a couple mph's then slowly got back to the top speed. As it is now, I have to figure out just how hard I can hold down the gas (I use x and square for gas and brake) to keep a high speed without accidentally hitting the top speed and losing some mph a second later. It's a pain in the butt.

As for the car going up a gear when I don't want it to, I try to touch the brake just before the corner, and force it to drop back down that way. Sometimes it works, but not always. I wish I could learn how to play in manual. I think the only game I've ever used manual was for Nascar 4 for the PC years ago. But then again, all but two of those tracks were ovals. So once I got into high gear, I never left it. Just learning Sears Point (Infineon) and Watkins Glen wasn't too difficult. Speaking of which, why didn't they bring Sears Point into GT5 when it was already in GT4? I love that course.

I believe everyone has the ability to drive using manual gears, after all, that is what we are taught to do in real life when we learn to drive.

If you do not use a wheel, I would consider getting one as gear changes do not feel natural on a DS3. The DFGT is cheap for what it is and has a fairly easy to use sequential gear system, either paddles or stickshift.

Start out in a slow car on a familiar track and raise the stakes every now and again. Faster cars, tougher tracks, then try not looking at the rev counter. It will take a while but will be worth it. I have played GT since day one but didnt use manual until GT3, wish I started sooner.

Good luck if you decide to give it a go.:)

Using automatic in a racing sim is bad and you should feel bad.

Why? It's there for us to use which means that PD don't mind us using it.

How so? Is driving an automatic car IRL also bad? Illogical argument is Illogical.

Back on topic, I can't imagine this would take much coding, although seems like it's only me that wants this feature.

I have the same problem, even with practice I am slower over a lap than what I am with an automatic. It would be nice to be able to short shift out of certain corners or to knock the car down a gear in places, I find that a combination of dabbing the brake and handbrake in some corners can help you go down a gear.

It's not just you. They may not be in this thread, but I've seen quite a few people ask for this feature. It's been there before and it only makes sense.

But if you really devote yourself to it, it won't take more than a week or two to learn to use manual transmission properly. You WILL make mistakes but they won't cost you much time compared to the time you'll save having full control. It's just a matter of not getting frustrated when you do make a mistake and noticing when it does help you out.

also the small time lost sue to shifting errors would be made up somewhere else in the lap due to the ability to shift later on uphills, earlier on downhills, engine braking, etc etc etc

Yeah drive a manual, then you might not find games like GT5 so difficult to play correctly.

Not to mention some of the worst drivers in real life use auto. When your driving auto, you don't really have that connection with your car on how it behaves. Sticks the way to go ;)

Hard to believe a persons ability is judged by a transmission .

The key to changing over to manual is 'mindset'. Once you've made the decision to change, then stay commited and do as has been suggested. start out with lower powered cars in easy events and just stick with it. It will seem like you are not making progress but one day it will feel like it all came together and you will not want to go back.

Honestly, can we stop with this "just use manual" talk, the topic isn't about "Getting used to/switching to manual", it's about a semi-auto box function, where the auto box does most of the work but allows you control of gears when necessary. I don't have enough time on GT5 to make learning manual worthwhile, that's why I hope for this feature. :)

It should be implemented, or at least let us adjust the redline to a proper point, some cars it can be miles off....

Are you using a controller or a wheel? How can you forget to downshift? I think you just need to practice a little. It's really not something that should be a problem.

And I agree with you that they should have what you want in the game.

DS3, I think it's a matter of knowing which gear to shift down to for a corner, but it's still not instinctive anyhow, seems to disrupt my driving.

Seems really odd, it's almost like PD forgot, since you could do it back in the days of NFS Hot Pursuit 2, and that was a looonng way back.

Games before GT5 have had the manual shift up/down override the auto box when they're pressed, so why can't GT5 have this function?

Because GT.

We did have some semblance of override in GT4 (previous games too?) but it could only prevent shifts, not force them to happen.

OP says:

I think that unless you really know what you are doing that you can go just as fast with an auto, I end up taking the wrong lines and braking at the wrong time when I'm using a manual.

That was it. Knew they had it before, dunno why it was removed...

and I have the same issue when I drive an auto.

I thought GT5 had this feature also. I normally use manual but I got stuck in auto in a race and realized it doesn't work. The problem with auto on certain cars is that you lose a lot of powerband. Cars like the spoon s2000 rev 2000RPM past redline, and that's where all the power is.
