martial arts

I believe that eskrima is the discipline that uses the two "short" sticks.
I personally study, and subscribe to all methods of "illegal" moves. The stuff you can't use in the ring, but will save your sorry *** in a bar fight gone wrong.
I love to see a beautifully executed roundhouse, but myself I'll use the ol' "thumb in the eye".

My son refers to me as the "throat-punching, eye gouging, ball-smashing, knee-stomping, old guy."

I did Aikido for about a year, but because of payment issues i had to stop.

I love it, and think it's pretty unstoppable. :)

I did Karate for a while. I would like to get back into it.

For those that know... about how many hours a week would you expect are necessary to stay inot it enough to progress?

I'd say an hour/hour an a half every other day is enough to get some good skills in, but focus on your life issues as well. It worked for me. But of course, times are usually scheduled by the dojo or just the sensei. Unless uh, you're not talking about group classes...

Do what it takes eh Gil? Being a Canadian, we all use the " pull the jersey over the other guy's head and go for the spine trick".
:D . This works best after 12 beers and a donut for fuel. It's known as Canucking! A canoe paddle to the side of the head works well too.;)

eskrima is a filipino martial art, there are many differant styles. some use a knife or knives. two sticks or one. the sticks are reffered to kamagong.

Im currently studying Jujitsu, and have done taekwondo when I was younger. Jujitsu is soooo sweet even thought Im not that good. But the guy whos head of my Dojo is insane, I went to like a sparring contest kinda thing against other dojos and watching the to leaders go at it is one of the coolest things imaginable. Just think Matrix without the special effects and impossible stuff but all the grabs and throws are there its rediculously cool. Thats not it but you get the idea.

i did karate from the ages 7-9, about three belts from black. stopped and restarted about 4 yrs after, had to start again from the bottom. :(

I'm currently taking Capoeira classes. It's really fun and some of the moves my mestres can pull off are crazy.

Exactly.
My wife thinks I'm the sweetest guy she ever met.
I have her completely fooled.
I don't do all that stuff mentioned before, unless somebody messes with her, or the kids.
I forgot "kidney punching" in the first post too.:D

I'm also a strong proponent of "Ghetto Judo":
Judo know if I got a stick, judo know if I got a knife, judo know if I got a gun..."

Yah, hes the ultimate button mashers dream. He's the reason I cant win 100 percent of the time against my friends, there is always that lame game where (due to Eddies odd hit areas and ease of performing moves) I get smoked bad.

/thread hijack =P
