I think GT5 would greatly benefit from bringing back the relaxed & easy racing we had in GT5p. I'd really like to see it back, but with stating that I'd also like to suggest little things that could potentially make it even better.
So most will already know we had in GT5prologue a system of public matchmaking, which was just a process of the server picking up random (somewhat - there must have been some degree of favouring based on some facts, like location and connection speed, etc.) people to race each others. The important thing with the system was that using the clock to syncronize your 'starting' times you had a great chance to gather meetings with your friends and get on the track at the same time. This may sound weird if you haven't tried it but it actually worked really well and offered few major advantages over the current system. You could almost say that by agreeing to some starting times (for example 4 races / hour at XX:00, XX:15, XX:30, XX:45) there could be maximum of 30-100 people joining for a race.
Example thread: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=127414
Maybe I also need to add as a fyi, that there were a few events based on drivetrain / PP / etc. that changed once a month (about). So within those requlations you could bring any car you wanted (or the car you had agreed on at the forums, for example).
What this meant:
- always someone familiar to race with
- everybody could join the fun at any time (just needed to know the event we were running)
- anyone could skip a race at any point and join back at the next timeslot and still have the same kind of group of good racers without any searching
- you ran into many really good drivers that you never knew before - in one night
- there were some bad apples once in a while joining at said times with "wrong" cars and spoiling the fun for others - clearly on purpose
- if there was too many players joining (generally), it was sometimes a bit hard to find the group of people you were 'searching' for - if you were trying
New, better matchmaking in my eyes:
You'd have a "matchmaking preferences" check box - and the servers would gather based on these choices groups of people together.
xx=minutes past said hour the race starts
Starting order would be random, if nobody comes up with a working idea.
Example:
Now, with the example selections you would be automatically joined in a race with 'random' people that had Spa, correct PP class, SH tires and 3laps checked, every 15 minutes.
I can imagine how much fun I'd found it to be if there were 50-100 guys/girls from GTP alone with the same preferences joining.. I really don't care who I race with as long as there's full rooms. I'd always know there is a high chance of them being good clean racers as the "race preferences" would be made public here (or any other GT site). The preferences would also greatly reduce the chance of partypoopers joining..
There's lots of possible details left out of this post but maybe there would be a button for "miss next scheduled race", and if you would still be running a race when the next race would be due (too many laps for the time window), you would be just notified with an undisturbing message of the next scheduled race starting time.
Wrote this as I do miss the system we had, even if it wasn't perfect. It was too easy to come home after a long days work and instantly find good racing. Any comments welcomed
(All this would of course be just as an addition to the current system.)
edit,
Tires*** added to the choices.
As mentioned in the thread, the main advantage of this system would be to avoid creating more rooms than needed for the players that want to basically race the same thing. More people on the grid often equals better experience.

- Track (...)
- PP class ( -399, 400-499, 500-599, 600-699, 700-799, 800-899, 900-)
- Drivetrain (FF, FR, MR, RR, 4WD, free)
- Tires (CH, CM, CS, SH, SM, SS, RH, RM, RS, free)***
- Laps (maybe just a few possible options like 3/5/10/15)
- Starting times (up to 4 slots: [XX:xx],[XX:xx],[XX:xx],[XX:xx]*)
