Technically yes I would say. The Mustang II and Fox Body were like that and were considered hatches. It doesn't have a trunk either so yes I'd say so.

Yes it has a hatch, but it's mainly just the glass, so I don't consider it a hatchback because no body panels lift with the hatch, like a typical hatchback.

Upon further research, most automotive magazines call it a hatchback, so I guess I'm wrong.

That's a liftback.

If the area around the license plate came up as well then it'd be more of a hatch.
Technically a liftback would be a sub-title for a hatchback.

Even though it's technically a hatchback, I'd call it a fastback coupe.

Hatchbacks, for me, are a different breed.

Yes, but I tend to differentiate the two based on the angle and whether or not the hatch also lifts up the area between the tailights.

I would call the Celica a liftback because it doesn't lift all the way from the bottom.
The Fiat is a a hatch. and I would consider the Audi a hatch because although it is sloped like a liftback, the light and license plate area also comes up.

Personally I'd just call them all a hatch to save the hassle lol. They all serve the same purpose and do the same thing.

Keep in mind that i mean this in a technical sense, as in, what would it be officialy classified as? Hatchback or Coupe?

Whether it's technically a hatchback or not, most automotive magazines, Mazda and RX-7 forums, and even Mazda dealers on Craigslist call them a hatchback, so I'm fairly certain two-thirds of people consider it a hatchback, so for better or for worse, technical or not, the majority consensus is it's a hatch.

Why are we even talking about this? I'm sitting here thinking, "Who cares?"

using that logic, these arent hatchbacks.

Those are all hatchbacks by that logic.

The area in between the lights also comes up.
(It just so happens that the license plate is mounted higher up on some cars. "License plate area" sounded better than "Area in between the tailights". I clarified it in the next post.)

The Škoda Superb and Toyota Carina E are both liftbacks even though they have boot lids that include the area between the tail lights.

'Liftback' is just a name for hatchbacks with less of a slope on the rear end, giving them a sedan or coupé-like appearance. It does not have anything to do with the height of the trunk loading edge, and liftbacks are still hatchbacks anyway; they have a rear door with hinged glass that opens to a cargo area not separated from the passenger compartment.

I think the best way to describe the RX-7 is 'liftback coupe', but it is still a hatchback.

Definatly agree. This is about the official bodystyle, and there is no liftback, as that would just count as a hatchback.

It's definitely a hatchback, but it's also a Coupé. The Audi posted earlier is the same.
Whether it goes down to the licence plate or not, as long as its hinged to the roof and gives you access to the passenger area, it's a hatch.
A bootlid or trunklid only gives you access to the boot/trunk and is usually hinged below the rear window.

Hatchback for me is if the back is cut off with a strait line. Golf-like. Thta's an hatch.
The Rx-7 is a coupé for me.
The A7 is a limousine or sedan with the coupé shape.

The X6 stays a SUV despite it having a coupé roofline.

My understanding, but as manufactures divide categories more and more, there will only be hybrids left
