No they don't. Philip Morris are paying to colour the entire car in an attempt to convey their brand image without actually advertising.

It's costing them handsomely.

Oh right, never knew that. Fair enough. 👍

Philip Morris has tons of money to spend so it's not a problem. It's not like they can spend it anywhere else given the nanny state the exists for cigarette adverts and the like. I think their deal with Ferrari is through 2012 or something like that as well.

Those black/white stripes you see on the Ferrari are the "logos" for Philip Morris's Marlboro. They have been tested and refined over the past 5 years to identify as the Marlboro "logo". Actually a very interesting case study for design and brand strategy...

:odd: ok... hmm... didn't know about that.

It's a good thing tobacco is addictive because their adverts wouldn't do jack squat.

You haven´t seen them? Ferrari uses them when they are in countries where tobacco adverts have been banned. Look at pic 6 here .

Thank you for digging that up. I didn't feel like it...

The lines, be it black/white, red/white, are designed to highlight the "Marlboro" brand. It's been user tested and focused grouped to death. I don't get it or see it and I am a professional designer...but they paid alot of $$$ for it.

I don´t see it either. I think even I could´ve done better job on that... and I wouldn´t cost as much :D

Is Vodafone the largest CSP in the world?

Nevermind. Wiki'd it and found out for myself. It's the largest (including subsidiaries) by a long, long shot.

i wonder what the car would look like with a vodafone logo? Arnt vodafone logos red? that wont go very well with the black and silver

Well who said McMerc have to stay black and silver?

the West logo has red in it, too. I'd imagine McMerc could keep their colors, and replace the white West with red underline with a white Vodafone "O" with red outline.

Marlboro should just pay for a respray of the car... I wouldn't mind seeing the cars in a classic red and white Marlboro color scheme, with the white reverse triangle on the front end. Ferrari would charge them an arm, leg, liver and kidney for removing that much sacred red :scared: from the car body, but any kid below seventeen will be able to identify it as the Marlboro box cover.

Wasn´t West replaced by some whiskybrand? That would have made the cars black and gold?

Johnny Walker was the brand but it wasn't a title sponsor, just a primary sponsor so the car wouldn't change colors for that brand...just prominant logos on display.

Vodafone is the title sponsor, thus the name of the team changes. Yes the cars will have to stay some form of silver (for mercedes) and black (for mclaren) and now red/white for vodafone....I'll be interested to see the rebranded car. Next month.

In 1996 McLaren also had Mercedes-Benz engines and the car was white-red because of Marlboro. There wasn't black/silver at all on the 1996 cars. Ok, maybe Mercedes has a bigger share in the team now, but I don't know that. I personally hope that they will keep teh current colours, but I wouldn't be too surprised if the colour scheme will be completely different.

I knew someone would bring this up.

A few things have changed;

1) Mercedes-Benz itself has rebranded it's racing self and using alot more silver in their cars...remember they used to be some alot of black Mercs (DTM) in the 1990s....this wa sin part due to there and German racing heritage 9If I'm not mistaken German's assigned international racing color is silver...like Italy is red, UK BRgreen.....)

2) Doesn't Merc have a much larger share in mcLaren now than back then? When they first joined ranks Merc was an engine supplier. Now Merc is a technical partner to McLaren.

Beyond the Mercedes stufff...

- McLaren has branded itself using black lately, thus the strong mix of black/silver will stay I am sure to honor both Merc/Mclaren brands.

-Vodaphone's brand is red? Given that i kinda expect the 06 McMercs to look alot like the Johnny Walker photochops that appeared over the summer but now with red replacing the gold....

I think it would be sweet if they flipped the black and silver colors. Like, black on top and silver on bottom. lol.

As said I didn't know how big/close the relationship between Mercedes and McLaren was (I know there were kinda hectic years when the team had his bad years. They were blaiming each other in those years. Maybe the relationship would be less close after that ;)). Thanks for clearing up by the way :)

Well, what colour are Kimi's and JPM's names in european events guys?

I'm pretty sure it can still be done with Vodafone.

Also read a report that McLaren will be running orange test cars (when they resume testing in 06, I guess) to gradually incorporate the red vodafone logos for the 07 season... they have no title sponsor for 06...

This **** really shows what F1 has become - A multibillion money exchange. I mean, just to have a car with totally different paint scheme only for testing is absurd. I want 1967 paintschemes back. :grumpy:
