Wow the rear is very small and narrow. The entire car is nicely streamline with the duckbill nose. Looks great and a different kind of beast.
 
Does it look longer, or am I just crazy?

Schumacher does like longer wheelbase cars.

But seriously, something is seriously off with the Merc's proportions to my eye, I just can't figure out what.

If the reports from Spain are to be believed, it is more than a front wing. There are supposedly fine channels in the W03's bodywork, starting on the nose and extending back over the entire car, which are designed to direct the air flowing over the car to where it is needed the most under certain conditions. The illustrations show a "W-duct", a three-pronged channel in the nose that re-route more air over one side of the car while the W03 is cornering, creating more aerodynamic grip on the outside. The front wing contributes to this, but it is not the only element in the design.

So yes, any team that tried to re-create this would need a complete overhaul, because the aerodynamics work across the entire body of the car, and not just the front wing.
 
Wonder how Nico likes them?

The W01 was adjusted to fit Schumacher's preference in 2010 and Nico didn't like it much. Probably because he was comfortable driving a shorter wheelbase car and even though it was only 75mm longer, I guess it makes a big difference when it comes to setup.

Edit: IIRC, Nico's car was put back to the shorter wheelbase after one race.
 
The Merc looks alien and strange.

There's basically no point in them doing an official release of this car now, there's so many pictures of it anyway :P

Also, on a personal note, I always liked the look of the Williams FW26. It was unique looking for that season, at least assuming my memory is correct.
 
Weren't these all considered ugly at one point. Especially the X-wings.

Maybe I got it wrong but the channels are only directed at the front wing...

EDIT: I just watched the video very carefully and it only as an effect on the front wing.

The images clearly show the channels set into the nose.

But even if it is just the front wing, it still affects the rest of the car. The idea is to balance the weight of the aerodynamic grip to where it is needed the most. As the car corners, the rest of the car has to be able to handle the increased aerodynamic load.

Those were tower wings, X wings are from Star Wars. But yes, they were considered ugly (still are I think) and were banned for safety reasons after the 1998 Sammarinese GP.

Partway through this video explains why.

Yes they have to be in the nose because the air is caught by that small nose intake, but then its channeled to the front wing... Im sure it as an effect of some sorts but is it that noticeable? its a very small nose intake that catches the air flow...

What channels on top of the nose? the channels are inside the nose... did you watch the video carefully?

there are no channels on top of the nose, just inside the nose channeling the air to the front wing...

But this actually makes me wonder if the intake on top of the red bull nose (not the one on the end/start) does not serve a purpose similar to this one but only directed and the back of the car and being a bigger intake it probably could have a bigger effect.

:lol: To do some thinking out loud...For a couple of weeks now, I've been wondering if the intake on the step of the RB8's nose could possibly act as an intake for a passive F-duct on the rear beam wing. If you could manage to effectively blow the rear beam wing with exhaust gases (which could create a large sum of downforce, but drag as well), you might very well be able to stall the wing at a given speed (depending on the track) for a rather substantial benefit when it comes to drag reduction.

I think this idea is probably a bit far fetched...but who knows (if you have a good enough understanding of the exhaust velocity and interaction with the air around/on the beam wing...it might be possible). Regardless, I do think the intake on the step does more than what Newey wants everyone to believe.

Looks like they're going to have a pretty huge inlet between those nose humps. Any three-quarters on pics yet?

And they're going with relatively far forward exhausts, too, from the looks of it.

The nose actually looks similar to last year's nose, just with a more pronounced hump and beefier wing supports. Otherwise, the car looks a whole lot like last year's car... except for modifications to the sidepod intakes.

Confusing... or maybe they're continuing their streak of not showing anyone anything before Australia? :lol:
 
That 2012 nose is making the car look a bit like a siege weapon. :lol:
 
The Mercedes are easily the best looking car's in the field for what I have seen this year.
 
It's good that they've done something a bit different, there isn't really a 'step' per se for the nose, they've just put 'walls' on each side of a long sloped body, for the suspension assembly.
