YLOD for christmas..... what would be the best route to go,

a:buy a new slim
b:get sony to repair
z: fix it yourself

what does sony actually do when the "repair" it.

If you had a 60gb you might want to save it or just sell it on ebay. People still buy YLOD'd 60gb I believe. But if you can't do that its best you get a slim.

If one of your options is to buy a new PS3 then your should at least try to fix the PS3 yourself. There are some good Youtube videos on fixing a YLOD PS3. It really doesn't seem that difficult.

You really have nothing to lose if your thinking of buy a new one.

do NOT send to Sony.

they charge $150 US and all they do is send you a refurb unit.
you will not get your unit back.

best plan of action is to:

fix your current PS3 unit with Gilksy's method and slowly save up for a slim.
when you have enough for the slim, purchase, then sell your fixed unit on ebay and recoup some of the money spent on the slim.

I feel ya man....my 20gb YLOD last night on Christmas Eve. You can try the Gilksy method but it is at best temporary. It could last a day, a week, a month...who knows. It should hopefully work long enough to get your info off of it. I ended up using the Gilksy method to revive my PS3, bought a 320gb slim, and did the data transfer between the 2 units. Another option is to have the processors re-balled with lead-based solder. There are a few places online that do this, and I believe it's around $160, but your best bet is to just get a new ps3. It sucks but it seems like all of the old phatty ps3's are destined to die this death at some point. Mine died almost 3 years to the day after I bought it. You'd think a $299 investment would last longer than that.

In Toronto there are quite a few local shops repairing PS3. So I would check around locally to see what options you have. In my case my PS3 power supplied died in october ... got it repaired which then lasted 2 days and then YLOD. I brought it in and they just baked the mother board and gave me a 1 year warrenty. Total repair cost was $120.

More then I wanted to spend but it looks like I will plan to replace my CPU paste every 2-3 years.

i wish the phattys would last longer. i utilize the memory card ports often and would hate to give them but. also 4 usb ports is nice to have. these problems can both be resolved with plug i card reader and usb hubs but who wants that hanging off their system. this will be the 3rd ps3 our family has gone through and to have this happen again is just a bit sickening. i want to buy a new one but the money just quite isnt there

Buy a new one. I have 3 Fat PS3's. Reaired the first two only for them to give up the ghost fairly soon after.

Gilksy's repair has no definitive lifetime. It really could last forever and a day, or just the day. It is reasonably easy if you have low money and a basic understanding of electronics (it definately helps when taking them apart).

abt 65 degrees, its even cooler in the basement where we keep it. i thin we are gonna try and repair it and then buy a new one. if the repair is successful we are gonna trade it into gamestop and get a few bucks for it

Our gamestop is selling them used with a 1 year warranty for $200. Trade in your old console and some games you don't play for a nice discount.

I heard SONY are currently replacing them for free, even if your over the warranty period. I unfortunately found this out after I got my old PS3 phat fixed by someone else. If you send to SONY, I believe you lose your game saves tho, if you get someone else to fix it you can keep ya gamesaves but the PS3 will become a ticking time bomb!

That's false. Turning the ps3 on and off is what causes components to wear. If he left it on for longer periods from the beginning, he would've been likely better off.

You will lose your save games with the fix so what you can do is buy an external SATA case, plug it into your PC save all the files on it, reinstall in your PS3 and preform the fix. Then once your system is restored plug it back in to the PC and transfer back over the needed files.

Assuming the saved games are not corrupt you should be all set.

game saves arent of concern. i only played gt5 which is backed up and cod which is stored online, im not worried abt saves. its just money.
