Metroid Prime...

....0wnz j00!!!

To elaborate:

<- joined the ranks of GameCube owners this afternoon. :)

I've been playing MP for a couple of hours now. Brilliant, in a word. The control is perfect - easy to pick up, and never impedes gameplay. The worlds are impeccably rendered - abandoned alien civilizations never looked so real. Music and sound are excellent as well. They fall into the same category as the controls - they never draw your attention from the game.

As for the machine itself...I can't believe how tiny everything is! The console fits neatly in one hand, the discs...they are probably easy to lose! :P I think they may have had younger players in mind when it was designed.

Access time is minimal. The initial load takes a few seconds, and I never once noticed loading during gameplay. I have to give it up to Nintendo - they are the masters of creating a seamless game experience.

I also can't believe how much better the machine is than the PS2. Higher resolution, faster and more stable framerates, more detail....everything! I know Xbox is supposed to be the best of the group, but quite honestly I've never seen anything on the Xbox that impressed me as much as the GameCube (Resident Evil comes to mind).

Ach. I have a gcn, but the Aussies don't get it till christmas  how does the game stack up to the other games in it's category?

Er, in the category? I don't know that I've played another game quite like MP.

I'd say it's the first first-person adventure that works really well. It's a bit of a depature from previous Metroids - there's not quite as much shooting, more of the game revolves around exploration and puzzle solving (which were always the high points of the game for me anyway). I like it. :)

Hope you get it for Christmas! At least it won't cost you. I booted 225 USD today for this game....I hope that there are a few other GC games I like. :D

For whatever reason, I'm having problems posting otherwise I would have thrown my 2 cents in yesterday. This game is absolutely amazing, I played until I was virtually cross-eyed.
Glad to hear you bought a GC for this game. Only GC owners know what I mean when you first load it up, seeing the cube rolling into the "N" at startup and just know that this little system just reeks of quality.
I don't know why, but the scanning thing is the greatest feature ever.... :D I don't want to say too much, but anyone that enjoys a good game has to buy this one.
As for other good games, I'd check out Mario and Starfox. Both are very good games, not great like this one, but better than most platform/adventure games on other systems (except Ratchet and Clank which is amazing.)
Super Monkey Ball 2 and Rogue Squadron are good too (SMB2 is great actually)
Animal Crossing if you liked Harvest Moon or "The Sims."
And the 2 Resident Evil games are excellent. (Best graphics ever probably.)

Yeah, I plan on checking out a few more games pretty soon. Just as soon as it doesn't threaten to keep me from eating. :P

<- already has too many unfinished (and in some cases, barely played) video games.

If it weren't for GT3...I might part with my PS2. Nintendo ahs a lock on game quality...a je ne sais quoi Sony still can't quite touch.

The thing about Nintendo though is that they will never put out any quality Driving games (because none of the 3rd party games are of any quality), and all Nintendo 1st party games have specific nintendo themes. F-zero, and Mario Kart are excellent, but not of Gran Tourismo status.

Well, I'm fairly sure that my upstairs neighbors think I have Tourette's Syndrome. Why? Oh, nothing...just the strings of obscenities, curses and oaths I've been putting forth for the last hour or so. :P

I've now gone three rounds in a row with Thardus (the aforementioned rock monster) and lost all of them. I was close on the last attempt, too. You must be fast to beat this guy. He has a variety of debilitating attacks and a collection of Space Hunter skulls (I think ;) ).

I can't play again right now, or I'll break something - possibly an artery. That, or my hands'll cramp up and be useless for a week straight (did I mention the rapid rate of fire necessary to chip away at him?).

:gnasher:

He wasn't so bad, use your infra-red visor to lock onto his weak spot and lock onto it. When your visor overloads, switch back to the normal view and you can lock onto his weak point to finish it off. Do this over and over, and when he rolls go into the morph ball to jet away. I used the Wave beam, and found that it had the best results. (Just normal shots, unless it was a big target, then I powered it up.)
I also hope the you have been collecting the extra energy tanks, because many of the bosses are totally impossible unless you have them.
Btw, did you ever see Galaxy Quest? All I could think of when fighting him was those little aliens chanting Gribnak, Gribnak, Gribnak, Rock, Rock, Rock....

Maybe that's where Retro got the idea....

I have three extra energy tanks. I've considered looking for one or two more; they would ease the fight considerably.

In case you're wondering....I've been doing exactly what you said...the part I have trouble with is rolling into a ball quickly enough to avoid him. I've been using the power beam only because there's a shorter pause between shots (making it easier to roll into a ball quickly). The wave beam has too long a recovery period for my tastes. :gnasher:

It has my vote!

I finally beat Thardus - I found another energy tank, which helped. I wound up using the wave beam - it was easier than before.

I dunno - my dodging skills seem much better when I'm rested. :D

Of course, the game froze for some reason. So I lost a half-hour or so of progress. :gnasher:

i heard it was the game of the year, which is impressive...

Probably will be, it may be layed out like a FPS, but it plays more like Zelda: Ocarina of Time (One of the best games ever.)
Great platforming too, which is hard to imagine in a FPS.

I love the game it has a couple of things that I am having trouble getting adjusted to such as the new first person view but im too busy playing vice city anyway. But yeah i agree that the jumping was surprisingly easy to pull off.
