And it shows in the Xbox 360.

After the PS2 being so much more successful than the Xbox (which was a year younger) Micro$oft learned some things from Sony.In example,look at the Xbox 360.You can now have it in vertical/horizontal positions.Where did this come from?PS2.

It now has 2 Xbox Memory Card slots built directly into the front.Resemble anything?PS2 Perhaps?

One thing they apparently didn't learn was backwards compatibility.

Micro$oft may as well dove into the shark pool with this one.

But then M$ saw people complaining that Xbox live was $50 a year....now...we get Xbox Live with the system....PS2 network adapter anyone?Sony didn't charge for online service...it just came free (if you bought a PS2 WITH the Adaptor).Now everyone can CHOOSE to subscribe to Xbox Live "Gold" or whatever it is,but everyone starts out with "Bronze" Live.Bronze apparently gives you the ability to play games online,go to the XLive Market place and download content.

Micro$oft as definetly learned a bit from Sony,but still has a long way to go until they drive Sony to an early grave in the gaming industry (which was their plan for the Xbox-1,but....that didn't happen now did it?)

I don't see how that has anything to do with PS2 being more successful than XBox. Do you knowanyone that used their PS2 in the virtical possition? For more than one day?

It's better than on the controller, but do you know anyone that owned an XBox memory card anyway? That's what the hard drive is for. The PS3 is going to make better use of a hard drive - sounds like Sony learned something from Microsoft ...

I really fail to see the comparison. The XBox at least had the network adaptor built in. You had to buy one for the PS2. And because it didn't come with the system and there wasn't much of an internet network service from Sony there were very few games that supported internet play. XBox dominated the internet console market. In the new XBox they're just making it easier to keep consoles updated to defeat people modding their systems.

I'd rather pay for a good service (Live!) than get a crappy free one.

Early grave? How do you determine such things? They've been in the 'gaming industry' for over ten years.

The XBox had a lot of things going for it that the PS2 needed quite badly. Four controller ports? Widely support hard drive and network adaptor? Online service? It shocks me that neither Microsoft nore Sony are including hard drives in all consoles. This should be a requirement at this stage of consoles. Optical read speeds just aren't fast enough for the amount of data we're pulling from the drive while gaming. I take that back - either a hard drive or about 4GB of RAM. But I think the hard drive is cheaper (:

For the record, the "free" online service that comes with XB360 allows you to do everything except play games. If you want to actually PLAY online (which is the whole frikkin' point), then it's fifty bucks. So they're giving you the exact same "choice" they gave you before.

I agree with everything except this point. Backwards compatibility is a huge issue and a large asset. As you say "games aren't worth 50 bucks". Well, this just ensure's you get the longetivity out of those games, making them "worth 50 bucks".

Nothing wrong with being able to go back and play games, especially since this gives you a HUGE library of GAMES. I don't want fifty consoles, and I do like to play older games, hell we still have NES parties every once in a while. It's fun.
 
On the backwards-compatibility front, let me offer the following example, apt for the GTP boards:

Let's say you've got your PS3, and you're happy. But.. GT5 is still a year or more away. So you go to pop in GT4. Would you rather dig around in the closet to find your PS2, or would you rather just pop it into the PS3 and play? Seems like it'd be a mite easier to have only ONE system hooked up instead of three.

I play PS1 games regularly on my PS2. Games like Castlevania: SOTN. Much better than the 3D stuff on PS2, IMO.

As for next-gen.. I've got some friends who are a bit behind in game technology (not big gamers, not a lot of money, etc). When I get my PS3, my PS2 will go to them. And yet I can keep all of my games, and still play them, including that old Castlevania. I'd call that a big plus.
 
I for one want it backwars compatible, Like FF7,8,9 and GT1,2,3,P,Con!!! and alot more other games i like to play without having three consoles under the TV along with DVD player Sky box, and if you have a Plasma, LCD or Rear projection TV you needa tuner (unless its built in) alos dont forget the AV reciver for your surround sound so all that space is at a premium and people would rarther have just one console under their TV.

A friend of mine has used his PS2 on its side from day one, again due to space been scarce around the TV area.

I for one arnt bothered about online stuff for console but if i got a serivice that was free, then i might be tempted to use it, then afeter a while i might come to want the other services and pay for it, also the UK is young in its quest for all homes having BB so an online service was limited to people lucky enough to have BB.

I think that Sony and Microsoft have been taking the best from each others console and will be implementing them in the future consols.

Backwrds compatibility is BIG thing for when consoles are first released. I had a PS2 (which kept breaking!!!!) from the first christmas it was available. There were very few games out that i wanted to play at launch so i ended up on PSOne games. Circiut Breakers - great party game (but was stuck in PS2 when it decided not to power up!!!!)
 
I have always been a playstation fan finding the PS2 superior to the Xbox on so many levels. One of the greatest aspects of the PS1 and 2 is the controller but the PS3 seems to be equipped with a gamepad akin to a mutated bannana.

On this reason not others i expect sony fans to convert.

BTW I'm loving the PS3 cell core processor.
 
I dont know buddy, what are MS supposed to do? If they want additional memory capabilities, it makes sense to chuck the slots at the front of the machine.... not exactly copied off Sony, just common sense. Same goes for vertical/horizontal, Sony just came up with a good idea, the way home theatre, audio/visual equipment are going, it would have made sense for MS to implement this vert/horiz idea to complement modern entertainment systems.... again nopt exactly copying off Sony. So, if people started making home appliances like toasters vert/horiz I suppose you would gun them down for copying off Sony??... ok a bit different but still, its called giving people more flexability.

Not copying buddy... implementing ideas that fit within peoples lifestyles. We may as well gun down Sony for copying MS for bringing out a successor console. Geez man! :yuck:

For one,I didn't say it was the main part of the PS2 that made it succesful.It was just conveneient for users to be able to take less space in cabinents.I and 75% of the people I know use it in vertical position.

Memory cards ARE nice to have for transporting data from one Xbox to another.

I play alot of my old school PS1 games on my PS2 game for the fun since alot of the games arent out for the PS2.

wow, i really loved that online service with the ps2. 4 ppl total were on 2 games. they weren't too bad of games either. I did use the vertical position on the ps2, but it would make sense in general and not taken from the ps2. the hard drive was great, i used mem cards once in a while for xbox, but they didn't seem to be used all too much either. i also never had to delete my gamesaves like I did for ps2, and the music/ custom sound tracks were great.
 
Backwards compatibility is great. I like to reminice with old Ridge Racer and final fantasy games. But the challenge is you get stuck with the MS-DOS syndrome sooner or later. Holding onto the past will eventualy hold you back. Look at Windwos 3.11 and Windows 95. Maybe that's what Microsoft is thinking about?

Microsoft is as unoriginal as a company gets. They are the realization of what the japanese companies have been doing for years. Find a good idea and make it better/more marketable/cheaper etc. Having said that, Sony wasn't the most orignal with the PS either. but they did break ground in a few places.
 
Companies constantly examine their competitor's products and "borrow" the best features for their own products, also Sony. Especially the Japanese have been known for this for years. Now they also do their own research, but a couple of decennia ago they stole all the ideas from western countries.

I think Swift hit the nail on the head, though... of all the companies out there that "borrow" things, Microsoft is by FAR the most prolific. And that's not anti-MS fanboyism talking, either.. it's well documented all over the internet. If you've got something MS wants, they'll either buy it or steal it, wrap it in a Windows box and call it their own. It's been happening for thirty years.

Which in turn was "borrowed" by Microsoft for their "revolutionary" and "all new" Windows. You ever find it curious that the first functional version of Windows was V3? Whatever happened to Windows 1.0 and 2.0?

I will say this, though...is it that hard to actually spell Microsoft? We all know they're richer than hell. There's no need for a dollar sign.
