I just skip the number and concentrate on a symbol, still works.

You can do the same number twice. It changes the symbols next to each number everytime.

Any two digit number minus the sum of its digits will equal a multiple of nine. The symbols change with each "try again" but you will see 9, 18, 27, etc all have the same symbol...

Those are just some math coincidences.

Actually there is a trick similar to this one, but with cards.

There has to be some relation, in between the numbers, that gives some result that always carries that symbol. I personally thought there were different symbols for all the numbers, but they just alternate.

Talentless: It will work every time. Most times it's just your math that misses it. I screwed up my math the first 5 times before my brain caught up to it.

for instance...
Pick 23. 23 - (2+3) = 18
Pick 69. 69 - (6+9) = 54
Pick 32. 32 - (3+2) = 27

The answer is always a multiple of 9.
