I know a guy with an old skool mini cooper with a 400bhp vauxhall turbo lump in it.

Actually the MINI is a good car.

I don´t know if it even wants to be compared with it´s predecessor.
When it comes to performance matters, this car is outstanding. Cornering
speeds reach a point of surrealism.

Plastic is used in any new car. Just compere the classic 300SLR with the new
McLaren car. Name is the same, but a totally different car....build with plastic.

At least the MINI brand is still alive.

minis are great works of engineering but here in the states they are quite overrated and overpriced.

I agree. The earlier model was a good car and it was cheap (transpo for the masses). The latter Mini was still a good car (but not as close as the earlier model) but a tad bit expensive.

...and you wouldn´t lose the Cooper.
182 Cup is also a very nice car, no question. But the thread was about MINI,
not hot hatches in general. Here the Golf GTI is the car to chose right now.

I was driving an Opel/Vauxhall Corsa New Golf GTi looks rather nice! I heard it goes well too.
And just for the record, the Corsa 1.6 had no trouble in thrashing the Cooper in a straight line. 👍

What you just said might be true, I never drove a corsa. What is also true is that cars are not planes, which are made to go straight on a runway...even a 206 can eat a mini on a straight line, but the 206 would crush on the third curve...french shoul give up on making cars...

Bah the new Mini isn't even made by the same company, its all BMW now who have turned it into a Medium rather than a Mini. I still like the new mini but its got nothing on the old classic I am afraid.

The new MINI is a nice car, but it isn't exactly a mini. Which is probably a good thing since the mini is an old outdated piece of junk. If you want a modern mini go buy a SMART.

It annoys me when people like to cuddle with a certain vehicle just because they used to have one. It's cool that both minis are in the game though, to call another good car an abomination just because it doesn't look like your own dustbin on wheels makes no sense.

The Mini ONE has the same colors as the Mini Cooper.

The Mini Cooper has a black top on :
- Pepper White
- Pure Silver Metallic

The rest are white top.

The Mini Cooper S all have white tops for every color.

The Mini ONE does not have a different colored top for any of the colors

the old mini was an unreliable peice of junk, it was always breaking down in comparison to the japanese makes, the old mini wouldn't protect you in a crash with a shopping cart.

A little exaggeration is here but the basic idea is there.
as great as the mini was and is (I really want an old mini as a second "fun" car) it was time for a new one. Yeah, it isn't the old mini, but it's the new one and it's a lot of fun. compared to all the other cars out there, it's VERY zippy and recreates the feel of a small car, maybe just not the the extreme that the origional did.
So old mini fans.......................enjoy your old car because it's great, and shut up an leave the new fans alone. They are both great, fun little cars.

Make your mind up mate. First you state that the Mini "was an unreliable peice of junk" then you go on to say "as great as the mini was and is", "enjoy your old car because it's great" and "They are both great, fun little cars." Which is it to be?

I'll enjoy my Mini and they can enjoy their BINI, but let's face it, the neastest thing they have to the Mini is the name.

It's well documented the BMW didn't want anything to do with the Mini at first and it was only when they realised that all they had was just another small hatch that they then decided to exploit the Mini further.

There is only one Mini in the world and it's not a hatchback 👍

The mini is a heritage as well as a great car. The adverts call it a mini adventure, and it real is, ou are so much smaller than other cars yet you cna have so much fun in them! As for the new ones? Well the name is a mockery as they a like bus's compared to the old ones. The red mini cooper S on the first page is a fantastic example of a good mini. the smart car cannont be compred to themini, nothing can, it is as famous as the Model T ford and i doubt the Smart car could win the Monte Carlo Rally! Is the mini cooper rally car in GT4?, i dont think it is, but i could be wrong!

Thats tripe! French hot hatches are at their best when cornering! i would love to see th outcome of a CooperS and a 206 GTi180 on the track. I know what my money is on.

It is very simple. Planes dont have to have grip, as their objective is to go straight on a runway and take as much speed as they can for taking off.
When you compare two cars you have to take into account many more factors than who's faster on a straight line (grip, confort, look and so on) Do you understand? I wasnt that ckear before. Let's face it though, the mini is better looking, pimper, more confortable inside, better built (GERMAN ENGENEIRING), and dont forget that it's a 1.6. Its unfair to compare a 1.8 to a 1.6...

I've got a 1966 Austin Cooper S and a 1971 Mini. Had a 2002 MINI Cooper S. Took it to the dealership SIX times for the same problem. The 02 made way for our 04 Infiniti G35 Sedan.

The Mini, in 1959, was the first car to have a transverse mounted engine. 80% of the length of the car is available as interior space. They produced (factory) engines from around 30hp up to 90+ with the ERA Turbo. Modern Mini turbos can produce over 200hp. People have fitted Vauxhaul (sp?) engines, Honda engines, V6s, V8s, you name it. One guy stuffed a GT40 engine in the back of his Mini Pickup.

When I drive my 71 Mini I have guys (no crap) in Ferrari 360 Modenas and Porsche 911s pull up next to me telling me how cool my car is.

They handle great.

They have lots of space. I'm 6'6", 280lbs and I fit in it. Along with 3 other people, which I can't say about the new MINI... it was a 2 person car max!

They're small as hell. 80 inch wheelbase, just over 10 feet long, and I believe 4.5' wide.

... just wear your seatbelt though. That way they don't have to look for your body when you get run over by some soccer mom in her f'ing SUV.

Oh yeah, and they won the Monte Carlo rally a few times. Were kickin so much butt that the French decided to disqualify them one year for headlights that weren't the proper size. lol.

i think the original mini's short wheel base had alot too do with there nimble handling. They were fantastic little cars i loved them ever since i had a go in one plus they look cool they dont make em like that anymore............

So you are telling me that straight line racing, such as 1/4 miles is a waste of time? If so, why is it currently so popular with performance car owners? 1/4 mile, straight line racing is just as important as going fast round corners, especially considering autobahns, motorways, freeways are generally STRAIGHT, and having good mid gear acceleration is important.
Also, comparing a naturally aspirated 2.0 with a supercharged 1.6 is more than fair, seeing both ar hot hatches too.

And just for the record, aircraft on their take off run, have considerable traction on the runway tarmac, 150-300 tonnes of aircraft and the downforce of 10degree of flaps makes sure of that.

BTW,using the word "pimper", is only showing you as a stylist, rather than a performance head, which in that case, yes the Mini Cooper has this "pimp" thing about it, and is a styling accessory more than anything.

Recent JD Power survey from Top Gear showed that Mercedes were very very poor considering they are one of the top german manufacturers, and most german car makers didnt do well at all, in fact, french cars are becoming extremely well built, and did very well indeed in the survey.
So to German Engineering, No Thanks!

dude if you have fun driving straight, go ahead...but anyways this dispute can go on forever and ever so let's find a meeting point. Performances (I dont mean only max speed and acceleration, but general performances) in a car are as important as safety, confort, and look. If you got something else to say go ahead. And I was also saying the 206 is a ****ty car for the simple fact that the steering wheel doesnt seem to follow your instractions. Have you haver driven a 206? Have you ever driven a mini before? Well if you had, you would agree with me, I'm sure.
About the survey man, I dont buy all that crap. Stop listening to what they tell you and start testing yourself...and I am not talking about super cars, I am talking about normal ones, such as minis and 206's. They're the same class (Gran turismo would call them class C cars), and yet there's a price difference. That's because there's a QUALITY difference. We are definitely on different wavelenghts. When I buy a car, I consider all those factors. A lot of French are also arrogant and unpolite most of the times...but that doesnt concern us, and I can't generalize...

My opinion is that the MINI is a worthy succesor to the old one. But to put it simply, i cant see BMW selling 5 million of the little buggers. I love the old Mini, and the new simply oozes cool. Who cares if the back seat is tiny, I dont think that rear seat comfort was BMW's top priority when they built it.

Ive heard stories about Mini owners throwing eggs at New MINIs - Thats just stoopid!
