Modifying DFP for fast countersteer...

Ok, whilst the Driving force pro is certianly the best wheel for GT4, it has one thing which dissapoints me a lot - slow countersteering speed. This has obviously been done for safety reasons, little kids getting arms trapped etc.

I was really looking forward to initiating a drift and letting the wheel spin through my hand and catch it at the right point. What actually happens is the wheel winds itself back at a stupidly slow pace, which is completely unrealistic and takes a lot of potential fun out of the game for me.

The thing is, i know it is possible for the DFP to perform much better. The wheel spins freely with no power on it, but the servo motors seem to be programmed to resist the return speed, or it has some other electronic brake on it to slow the speed it can turn.

Anyway, i going to try and mod my wheel insome way... if it is down to the programming of the servo motors, i doubt i would have any success as it would require some sort of firmware mod. If anyone has already tried something like this i would love to hear about it.

Try using these wheel settings: assist off, power steering off, 100% strong force feedback... It should go fast enough. The wheel is so small that it doesn't look as fast as it should. I think :dunce:

he is saying like take it apart and change the guts of it and put it back together.
If you change the FF force and the power steering it goes faster but gives you less feedback from the car.

If you unplug the power you can move the wheel considerably faster, but you don't have any feedback then. Take the + with the -.

Steering gets pretty light when you are actually drifting in RL. This is why you see many people 'toss' the steering wheel one direction and grab it. Minus a car with a bad powersteering pump, I've never driven anything nearly as had to steer as the DFP.

Yeah me neither. Being a driving enthusiast in real life I know how unrealistic the DFP is. In some ways, i prefer my old Driving force as at least it could countersteer itself properly :indiff:

The DFP is a damn good wheel, but it has to potential to be awesome. It's like fair enough you can make the cars in the game drift but the fun to me is doing it how it is done in real life. I use GT4 because i don't want to smash my car up too often! Anyway i'm going to go and try those settings you guys suggested and see what it's like. Then the next step is take it apart and see what i can do.

My aim is to make 'the real driving simulator' the 'real drifiting simulator' :)

yeah the whole point is the wheel can potentially move fast enough, and without losing the feedback. Logitech just made it move slow undoubtedly for safety reasons. I wish they just made it over 18's only or something!

Feedback = Good

If any of you have any complaints about the added noise from not having the wheel assist your movements, you're not drifting/driving smooth enough.

As a little indicator for everyone to go by: a sudden loud noise is a sign that you've just created a sloppy looking exit.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but that's a major symptom of unsmoothness.

And since drifting is almost entirely about looks and perfection, why not make it easier to teach yourself?

your referring to how hard it is to straighten the wheel out exiting a drift right? cuz its really easy to counter steer.. in fact so easy you can just toss the wheel like a real car.

if anyone is daring enough to go inside the wheel and maybe take off whatever device they have that makes it do this please post steps on how you did it cuz i HATE how hard it is too.

my car has NO powersteering and its easier to turn than the damn dfp. its a fwd 2600 lb car that use to have P/S but i removed it because im dumb and like the "feel" it gives. anyways, powersteering is only really effective when the car is traveling at low speeds or is completly stopped.

Sloth- Feedback in a realistic manner is deffinantly good. however, i think the original point (maybe im dumb&wrong... wouldnt be the first time lol) is that the wheel returns to center unnaturally slowly after a slide. I have to agree that it does. for me, the one major thing that i cant really grasp yet is how to exit a drift smoothly. I always end up going past center because my wheel has developed a "soft" zone for about 30* around center. so im forcing the wheel back (when in RL it would be spinning a little more easily on its own) and going past center, and then the car tends to kick back just a little on the exit, so annoying, so dirty 👎

yea yea, "learn how to drive it F*ing dumbass.... yeah... well its hard =P

Lol on my old Driving force, I completely took it apart and took the motor off and I used to throw the wheel around when I drifted. But then there isn't much to throw around since it doesn't go around much.

What I meant to say was not pluggin the DFP have the same effect as changing the feedback force from Strong to Mild. However, this does not sold the problem, you're correct, but I do think it makes countersteering a lil bit easier, atleast for me it does. Honestly I dont think you can have both faster countersteer with 100% feedback force without modifying your DFP. I just wish they included that lil feature in GT3 that lets you configure the sensitivity of the steering wheel. I think that would been helpful.

Yeah but the wheel does not move anything like as fast as a real wheel would do during drifting - you can countersteer but it's so much more fun to let the wheel spin through your hands, and you can get much better control this way.
The front wheels of the car in the game do attempt to follow castor as a real car should, but because the wheel has restricted speed to turn itslef, the wheels end up not staying straight unless we help the wheels back ourselves, making it very hard to judge how much countersteer to use.

I reckon when designing the game they made the wheel perfect, then some health and safety head turned up and gave it a thumbs down for danger to little kids 👎

Dont' worry, if I find anyway of improving it i'll post full steps!!!!

ya i know thats what i was talking about. but anyways i bought mine from best buy a few nights ago and got this 2 year replacement thing so if anythign happens to my wheel i get a free new one so i might just try to open it up and poke around =x

For me, the DFP looks alright, at least I can drift 👍. There's another sterring wheel of Enthusia Professional Racing and it's 900 degree (I don't remember what's the name but I think it's called "GT Force Pro").

Yeah and if they figure that out...bye bye warranty.
