Montoya in NASCAR Nextel Cup 2007

I was kinda hoping that a NASCAR driver would make the switch to F1. Jeff gordon apeared in the drivers championship? went toe to toe with MS on an international level. how about him? besides he already looks like a male supermodel, thats the only REAL qualification. </joke> :dopey:

I think it is more of a money issue when it comes to a NASCAR guy switching to F1. A guy like Jeff Gordon in NASCAR is making tons and tons of money and would probably not get the same amount of money in F1. I too would like to see one of the better NASCAR drivers to try and make the switch to F1, but I do not really see it happening any time soon.
 
@ Kooky: All I could really remember was the part where Dale Sr. raced against Jr. in the rain in their two matching Coca-Cola cars. That was a long time ago, so I apologise for my lack of memory there.

I'd like to see NASCAR at the 'Ring, kind of as a "ha-ha Europe" type thing. Maybe not the Nordschelife, but the F1 circuit would be fine. Maybe someone should give Schumacher a call and see if he wants to drive one, lol.

Another thing Nascar should do to get world interest is to stop delaying races for rain...(except for Daytona and Talladega) everyone knows it would be interesting to see those guys race in the rain at Bristol...Nascar fan or not. Nascar should work with Good Year to make rain tires that Nascar cars and trucks can both use.

While I would love to see NASCAR race in the rain on ovals... It's impossible to race in the rain on ovals because racing at close to 200 MPH on a wet oval is a bad idea. Even Champ Car/IndyCar doesn't race in the rain on ovals.

Goodyear did make a rain tire for NASCAR a several years ago for road racing. But I believe NASCAR hasn't used them for an actual NASCAR road race yet because the cars are too heavy.
 
I will miss JPM. To me F1 means the best of best. JPM definitely deserves a drive a whole lot more than some of the current F1 drivers. Well, I wish him all the best, and I might even watch a few NASCAR races now. Especially since Toyota is joining also.

As for American drivers in F1. Of course I would love to see that. I think we might start to see teams recruiting American drivers in the near future if Scott Speed continues to progress the way he has.
 
Something that was brought up in the paper is that Mclaren can call Montoya back at anytime during the season as he's still under contract. So much for relaxing in Miami.

Anyone catch any of the interviews on SPEED today before the French Grand Prix? Peter Windsor asked various people in the paddock about JPM leaving F1 for NASCAR. Some of the comments were pretty funny.

Oh, it's alright, no worries. I have those two cars in 1:64 die cast, too...

I think if Nascar does make it to the 'Ring, Michael would perhaps realize how big Nascar really is. Which 'Ring course Nascar decides to use doesn't matter to me...

Ok, I didn't give that part too much thought. Sorry. EDIT: It would be nice to Nascars race in the rain on smaller tracks and road courses. Nascar should also work torwards making the cars lighter along with the rain tires.
 
I could see rain tires for the flat ovals and the road courses, nothing more. The main reason i belive most people int he United States like to watch Nascar, besides the fact its competitive, is that you can see the whole track in (almost) any givin seat. Why go to a race if you cant see the whole track? You might miss one of the best passes in the history of the sport, because it wasn't in your veiwing range.

Not only is he one of the few who can overtake, he is one of the view who actually tries to overtake and be successful at it.

As JV said on hearing the news, JPM has made a 'gutsy & ballsy' move. All the best to him. Another true character of the F1 paddock to depart. NASCAR's gain is F1's loss.

Although this really isn't about F1 anymore, does anyone have predictions for how Juan will do tommorow night in his first stock car race?

I don't expect him to do well, but hopefully he has a strong showing. It should be interesting to see how well he progresses in his next few races.

Judging by the qualifying results, I'd wager Montoya will do fairly well. Think I might tune in and watch for a little while (tomorrow on Speed, 8PM EST).

I wasn't aware that he wasn't second fastest in qualifying. Well done, JPM!

But I believe, from my little knowledge of the ARCA RE/MAX Series, that no one else was on the track with him during qualifying. He probably has one of the stronger cars and a very good setup, which is ideal for qualifying. But it can only get you so far during a Friday night stock-car race.
 
I've moved this to the "Other Motorsports" section, since his departure from F1 is old news now, and he's starting to run in stock cars.

I think that him qualifying in second is a fair indicator of his natural pace and car control. Obviously though, in stock car racing, quali pace/times/positions are largely irrelevant, so we'll have to wait and see how he goes in the race.

Hmmm...I'm sure that Ganassi's tema has a lot more money and resources to put together a good ARCA team. It shall be interesting...especially when he gets to drive in front of his "home" crowd at Homestead-Miami later this year.

Gotta love those ARCA sponsors, though...

Watched some of the race. I don't know why people don't like restrictor plate racing. I'm not liking all those crashes but the close packs is the whole point of oval racing. This way they get close finishes and they don't have to throw "debris" wink-wink nudge-nudge cautions.
