How the hell can the..

If I was him, I'd be 🤬 in the car knowing what will happen as I enter the corner.

That has never happened in Formula 1 right?

It's been argued that something similar contributed to Senna's accident. The Italian courts ruled that the steering column failed because of faulty repairs.

But as for a steering wheel becoming completely detatched? Aside from Petrov's wild ride in Sepang, I don't think so no.

Not this time, Brundle.

I can't find a video for it, but look up Kimi Raikkonen's crash at Imola, 2001. On lap 18 he crashed due his steering wheel coming off.

EDIT: Best I could find, skip to 0:33 for a very short external shot. Can just about see that it was a strange spin halfway along a short straight....

Michael Andretti, the Milwaukee Mile master, lets Juan Montoya feel what its like to come under attack by an Andretti, as the announcer, Paul Page, says

"Montoya has courage"

Oh, that's a very good find! Ten years ago the safety was not all that high and I can definitely understand that. At least we now know it has happened before

Thanks mate!

Interesting info about this case has something in similarity to Senna's crash MazdaPrice. But it happened anyway, and we can't change that anymore.

After Raikkonen's case, I think we have no more apart from the recent Petrov's case which doesn't count as the whole steering column and everything kind of failed in the wild, wild ride.. Still, I'd be scared to death if that happens when travelling at more than 200kmh

Nigel Mansell, in his first Williams career, once had a steering wheel break in half during a practice session.

Both parts of the wheel came completely away from the boss and he got the car back to the pits using the boss.

A mechanic described him as "looking a bit pale when he got out of the car"

Remember it happening and thinking to myself "What a fool"!

Safety has come along way since then, but wouldn't say that makes it low even 10 years ago. reliability of components is more a factor as that has really increased in those 10 years, and what I'm guessing is that the wheel lock was not so tight, and by pulling just 1 of the levers accidently (instead of gear paddle) was enough to remove it from the column. Won't know for sure like an onboard shot might reveal though!

... and by pulling just 1 of the levers accidently (instead of gear paddle) was enough to remove it from the column. Won't know for sure like an onboard shot might reveal though!

Thus why the safety back then wasn't high. Not low, because I definitely agree safety was at the highest back then but compare that to today, it was definitely not all that supreme. The design of the lever is considered as unsafe if really the lever was the culprit instead of reliabilty of parts which is also considered as not safe if they're not reliable and may cause an accident.

Surely we won't know any of this unless we have an on board video to show us what exactly happened.

Ok, misunderstood previous post! For sure the tests for every component are now far more accurate to ensure they operate as they should.

I can't imagine that Kimi would have tried to pull both levers at the same time AND pull the wrong levers too so it would have to have been a failure of some kind.

The only one to match or beat him under fair circumstances, too.

Brundlefly should totally have been at Benetton in 1993.

Schumacher's got previous with teammates though, Hungary vs. Barrichello much?

I can't remember if someone's already mentioned this, but Marcos Ambrose's "control tyre" incident at Canberra in the V8SC was hilarious

edit: yep, it's already up here....I still laugh every time I watch it though, lol

Brundle never beat Schumacher in the standings, if that's who you're talking about.

No, but he and someimes Barrichello were as close to his pace as almost any other team mate. In comparison to Patrese in 1993, Brundle was miles better.

I remember watching this live. It was the final wreck in a crashfest of a race. I cant remember if they decided to end the race after this happened. But I do know it was caused by him hitting the opening in the wall that allows cars and people in and outside of the track

"The roof of the car is gone, the front of the car is gone, the front lip is gone"
No, the entire car is gone.

Thanks for posting those here. I completely forgot that was on and really wanted to watch it!

Good thing the safer barrier was invented, especially in the first one.
