Mozilla Firefox

I seem to be using just around 100-120MB of RAM. Haven't shut down my laptop since updated to 3.6 and it works flawlessly except for the one in my HP which crashes frequently when I run JAVA related things... GTP Chat is one of the example. I might just want to re-install the FF and lets see if it works.

Right now my Firefox is using 309MB. But that's not unusual for me since I open many tabs(sometimes I may open around 20-30 looking at stuff) and watch TV shows from hulu.com. The problem I'm having with firefox is that flash crashes or freezes sometimes but that's alright since I can reload the flash plugin or restart Firefox. The only reason that it's doing that to is because I'm using an older RC version of flash.

Flash crashes for me even though I'm using the latest version. If it gets to a point of being infuriating, install FlashBlock and see the difference. If it's the same as the Chrome version, you can just click the flash item you want to actually look at and it'll instantly make it appear. And as an added bonus, half the web's adverts will go bye-bye.

Guys, guys.... use Opera. Causes multiple orgasms at once.. just try it and you will see what I mean.

Mozilla is only good with Add-Ons.
And Add-Ons make Fireox 10x slower.

...and that's why, i switched to Opera. Does not use half as much memory (for me) and is waaay faster.

Chrome well...Opera is a tad bit faster on my PC.

Finally I have just had it with Firefox. It seemed to load fast and slow as it feels and I am just over it, I am now on Safari and so far so good :)

Anyone agree that Firefox hasn't been the same since Firefox 3 came out? Firefox 2 was a revelation after years of torture with IE6, the speed and tabbed browsing were what made it so special but since FF3 it seems that speed wasn't one of Mozilla's highest priorities but addons instead.

Speed was never a problem until Chrome came out ;)

4.0 Will be fast again though, already twice as fast for me, expect it to be with 5-10% of Chrome and Opera when it releases. And there are many other things that make internet feel fast rather than JavaScript performance.

Reminds me more of Chrome, personally.

I like 4 so far, the app tabs are pretty neat, but they don't seem to be saving when I close the browser yet.

Chris.

That bug has been fixed, should be in the next beta whenever that comes out.

It's been a while since we last talked about Firefox, and having just updated to the FF 4.0 Beta 12 I thought I'd revive this thread long enough to share my opinions.

The latest beta is running a hell of a lot smoother than the old FF 3.xx I was using, and using less memory at just under 120MB (3.xx was ~130). Loading is faster and generally the functions all seem sped up, not that I had any real problem with the old version.

I'm not sure I like having the tabs above the address and toolbars but I'll keep with it for now and see if it grows on me. A few minor differences in how bookmarks and history are displayed but nothing groundbreaking there.

The personas are next to useless now with only a sliver of space at the top for anything to show. I haven't played with the appearance settings much but I can't see where (or why, come to think of it) you can add space for more pretty pictures around the workspace.

All the option tabs are now combined in to one Firefox tab at the top and I definitely like this. It feels natural to point to one spot and have access to all the options.

Anyhow, I can wholly recommend updating to the beta for most people. I believe there's enough of an improvement to make it worthwhile. Just check the Firefox website for known issues to make sure they don't affect you. You can also degrade back to the FF 3.6 if it's not your thing.

I'm a loyal Firefox user but I'm waiting for the final 4.0 release before installing it. 3.X has terrible memory leaks which when you have many open tabs clogs up the system so I'm looking forward to this one.

Its a damn pity Mozilla said no 64bit for this one (on PC's) but they will be getting it together soon. The concept UI for Firefox 5 looks revolutionary and so damn sweet. They say it will be out much quicker than 4.0.

Robin.

Waddya mean? The new Firefox looks like the Opera. the menu button thingy.

Look at this:

I'm referring to the 2005 version. I never liked it anyways.

@somebody: You can set the tabs to the bottom by right clicking next to the tabs.

Just installed it, it definitely looks very nice. There is plenty of room for persona's too. A few of my addons have been disabled as they're not compatible but that's understandable for a Beta. I'll report back after I've used it for a while.

Put it on my gf's pc too, so far her thoughts are "oooooh it's pretty!".

I'm happy that browsers are getting thinner without losing important parts. More browsing space really. If you press Alt you can get the old toolbar back for a moment.

I don't get on with the any of the beta, including the latest, it seems pages/tabs don't like loading, and this is exasperated by there being no refresh button, even though I told them it's missing, FF 3 has a 1 click refresh button.

What's that on the end of the address bar then?

I've noticed there isn't a status bar though and I can't find any option to add it.

*edit* There is but it only shows up when it's working. I'd rather have it there all the time.

Been a while that I've posted in my thread. My comments about the new Firefox? Still can't beat Opera.

I'm liking the 4.0B a lot. First time I've ever used an FF beta installation...and I've yet to find any problems. Well, other than it starting up in Offline Mode for whatever reason.

The only problem I have is that hotmail automatically reloads but I have read that is partially Microsoft's fault. Reducing how much RAM firefox uses would be useful too. I'd also like to see a "slim" version of firefox 4 where the browser is stripped down to the basics. It would be great for old computers, especially ones that only have 128MB of RAM.

It's entirely the fault of MS, the reason it does it is because of their none adherence to web standards. Mozilla refuse to fix it because that would mean accommodating none valid code and MS are leaving it be for the time being saying they don't support beta browsers. If they fix it when the full FF4 comes out I'll stay with hotmail otherwise I'll be setting up a gmail account.

As for memory, on my 64bit Win 7 rig with 4gb ram it will happily chew up ~500mb of ram after it's been running all day with 20+ tabs including a couple of flash vid streams. But close it up, make it free that memory and re-open it and stick to moderate browsing with only a few tabs and it sticks to about the 200mb usage. On my 32bit virtual machine which only has 1gb dedicated to it the same heavy browsing tops out at around the 200mb mark and the light browsing around 100mb.

The joy of Firefox though is how extensible it is. In terms of customisation and add ons nothing comes close. It's not a light weight browser any more, but on a respectable system it is the most powerful.

You can only see a reload/refresh icon when the page has loaded, the only time I ever need a reload button is when the page has not loaded properly, hence the whole function is a useless piece of crap with firefox 4. In firefox 3 you can create your own icon and place it in the toolbars, there is no icon in FF4.
