If you consider that I paid $75 canadian, that's an AWESOME price 👍

4th Gen ipod, Vaja leather case, EX71-SLs, iTrip. I'm jealous of those iRivers, so i will probably go for one of those later on this year (I spend a ton of money on my music, and I upgrade the player about once a year, and sell the old one).
YIKES, that's a lot of money put into an iPod setup, and you don't even have a CMOY tossed into the loop yet.

Oh? Why is that?
I'm not a fan of the sound quality, I find the basses to be very dull and the treble is very lacking, even on headphones that tend to over-emphasize those aspects of the sound. In addition to that, you really don't get anything for the money on an iPod. It's a $300 device whose sole capability is to play music, and does a poor job at it. To make it worse, the advertised 12 hour battery life is just horrible. Back when I first got the 3rd gen iPod, I was lucky to get 4 hours on the rated 8 hour battery. In addition to that, I don't have to go through iTunes or a 3rd party alternative. Those programs are/were typically inefficient, they slow down the music transfer because of the database requirements on the iPod, and in general, I find them clunky to use.

Since then, I've switched to an iRiver H140. While the interface is a bit lacking, the player is absolutely amazing. The sound quality is very good, the battery life is amazing, even after a year of constant use. Add in the fact that I now use my iRiver for recording interviews straight to wav or mp3 at press events, I can listen to radio if I need to, and I can use my iRiver to convert my friend's LP's straight to lossless wav format.

:scared: $75 yikes?! I would never pay over $30 for any head phones... but hell, I might try those Sonys even though I really don't need them. 👍

Most of the reviews said they were good alternatives to Noice Canceling headphones and to me that sounds good because those kinds are hella expensive.

I'm a bit of an audiophile, I was low on funding at the time, and I wanted to block out outside noise. These fit the bill perfectly. I would have gotten the Shure e2c's, but I couldn't afford the price tag @ $100US + shipping to canada :irked:

**** they are going for more even on eBay!? Hay, emad I noticed you don't recommend any kind of HD based player yet you have an iRiver?

alright, want my reccomendations as well?
Best player overall: iRiver H3xx series and to a lesser extent, the iRiver H120/40.
Best sounding player on the market: Creative Zen Touch or any of their other HD players

I didn't get the Zen because it was bulky compared to the iRiver and it relied on software for syncing music. They fixed the bulk with the Zen Touch, but the software dependance is still there. In the end, it's a very close toss up between the Creative and iRiver. Creative sounds better and gets double the battery life, but iRiver has voice recorder, fm tuner, and a color screen for pictures and movies... well, the movies need you to install the European firmware.

:D

No, I just don't get why you don't recommend any HD player yet you have one. I don't need any recommendations I already got my kick ass flash based player. :sly:

He only recommended against hard-drive based iPods... somewhere an Apple marketing exec is rubbing his hands together with glee that you just used "iPod" to mean "MP3 player".

That being said I have both a 512 iPod Shuffle and a 20-gig iPod clickwheel that I bought for <$200 as an open-box refurb. So far it's been great and I like the Shuffle for knockaround stuff like mowing the lawn and the 20-gig did great to entertain everybody on a recent trip. I've had no issues with poor battery life on either one.

I do need a couple pairs of new 'phones, though.

MP3/WMA CD, AM//FM tuner, 35 hour battery life on rechargable AA batteries. Combine it with Sony MDR-J10 headphones, and it makes a pretty good budget portable music lineup.

The EX are earplugs designed for music listening. The V series have highly pronounced bass and treble for DJ and mixing purposes. It's a shame that so many people buy the V series of headphone for their mp3 players. There's nothing great about them for the cost, and they only provide their full range of sound on high output devices.

Ala the 4mm adapter jack?

Yeah, that's about 159 dollars, on top of the ~290 I spent on the player. You can imagine how much I spend on CDs and merchandise, I assume. (And how much I don't spend. :sly: ).

I don't mind iTunes. It's easy to use, and I don't have to bother with it when I'm listening to music on my comuter. Anyway, I don't do transfers of more than 25 songs or so at a time.

I usually get about 13 hours of battery life on my iPod with headphones. Battery life isn't too key for me, as 95% of the time I have the opportunity to charge it every night.

Again, the iRiver will probably be my next MP3 player (and that's what I use, MP3! Don't give me your stupid formats, Apple, Microsoft, etc!). If Vaja makes a Caterina case for the iRiver, I'll be convinced. I absolutely love my case.

No catarina Vaja case for iRiver. Just a generic looking one. It's still a nice case though, especially with their quality of leather :D

I prefer OGG for my rips. I'd do MPC, but no player supports that yet 👎

I have a sony walkman nw-hd1. Its sound quality is excellent. 20 gigs storage and can be used as a flash drive (on some computers only though). It turns all the songs into this strange format called OMG audio. its weird btu its still good.

I perfer to keep songs on my computer in good ol' mp3 format.i really havent found any reason to switch

A little question some of you might be able to answer : on which of these mp3 players can you download pictures directly from a digital camera (by USB2.0) ?

(I don't necessarily want to be able to view the pictures on the player but I was wondering if the huge capacity of the hard drives could be used as a storage on the go)

To go directly to the mp3 player without a computer in between, you'd need a european model of the iRiver H3xx players.

Archos has one as well, but it's rediculously expensive, it's battery life isn't spectacular, and if I remember correctly, it only handles compact flash media.

Thanks a lot. The H3xx players look nice (if a bit bulky). I'm just a bit saddened there isn't more choice if you're looking for that specific capability.

I like the carbon fibre effect on those iRiver H3xx players

It's not as bulky as it appears. It's only thicker than the 20gb iPod by 2 or 3 millimeters. It's narrower by a similar amount as well. It just makes the player appear to be fat.

that's real carbon fiber on the players :D

 man you guys are suckers.
My thoughts exactly...what good is carbon fiber on a MP3 player? All it has to do is store and play MP3s, and it's in your pocket most of the time anyways so no one can see your "bling".

Really, the only benefit to having a real carbon fiber body is the fact that it's lightweight, strong, and pretty resistant to scratching. The iPods are fairly heavy for their small size because of their chromed backplate and heavy plastic front. Not only that but the things get scratched by the lightest touch.

Other than that, you're right. CF is nothing more than bling for the mp3 player... but then again, that's exactly the reason for the plastic and chrome on the iPod and the bright shiny white of the Creative Zen Touch.

i got a creative muvo tx fm 512mb, radio freezes for some reason now good lil player tho. i was thinkin of getting a 20gb zen cos i listen to too much :D

Didn't the brick have a colour screen?
Yep, the brick could play, and take via the camera attachment, videos and photos.

£185 for a player which has a 40GB hard dive and colour screen for photo's, plus it's not an iPoD 👍 which IMO are a triumph of marketing more than anything else.
