It's so ugly!

Wrong answer.

'94-'98 Mustang V6 like the plague? My dad's was as reliable as they came even though I think it had something extra in it.

They are ok in reliablity if you take care of it--or at least some people say. But they are slow as hell and should be avoided.

And some Japanese cars don't sound like rubber bands:

That's what my Prelude sounded like and I loved every nanosecond of it. My Prelude made me truely appreciate the other end of the spectrum versus my Camaro. I really want another one. Even though mine was totalled and it gave me issues I still loved it.

:(

Jeez, after 20 minutes of trying to edit my picture, I can finally post. Stupid virus scan... anyway, JCE, I didnt know that your Lude was totaled? You should buy another one ;) Since it seems like the cool thing to do, heres a pic of mine:

preludeoverfencekg2.jpg

I'm pretty sure that the Lude would outperform the V-6 camaro/firebird/mustang in every aspect except the rear wheel drive portion. The Lude gets better mileage, handles better, goes quicker, looks cooler, etc. but there are some problem areas, the ss auto trans being the main, and 91 octane minimum being the other. Some other issues are, the engine uses oil, about 1 quart per 3k miles is normal, and Ludes are getting older now so most of them are nearing the timing belt/water pump/auto tensioner change time.

The first owner totalled it in 1998 (it was a 1997 model). I was the third owner. It just gave me issues mainly due to the rest of the car being reconditioned wrong. At least the engine was in perfect shape. I WILL buy another one someday but the Camaro comes first.

Oh, and again you have a lovely car dude. I need to change my pants. :D

*edit*
And just get the damn JDM foglights already!!!

Thanks for the complement but the car has some minor flaws. Mine is salvage title too but no problems there. The clear coat is starting to peel on the drivers door, and the wheels are kinda boogered up. I love it though. 👍

I still believe that with good tires, RWD isnt as bad as people say it is in the snow. I drove a Lexus SC300 in one of the worst snowstorms that we have had in like 3 years, and I didnt crash. The only problem I had was the traction control not letting me move because it was stopping the wheels from spinning. I have been in a ranger with a kid who could easily control it, he could swing the ass end around with so much control that we were in a controlled fishtail for like 1/4 mile, at that point, he swung it around and went back in the same manner that we came down. Its all about throttle control, and a good set of winter tires, IMHO.
It's not bad, per se.
There are just so many other options available that are easier to live with.
I love(d) my Ranger. But, now I have a Camry for normal snow, and an Excursion, with 4WD for the "I really should stay home" snows.
The next best car for snow that I've ever owned was a 1982 Nissan Sentra. That thing would go just about anywhere, within reason.

Oh. My. GOD.
That was almost as pleasing as a thunderous V8!!

Wait now, Prelude takes 91 octane? I can't afford that!

@Famine, I apologize if you own one of those, but IMO it is drop dead ugly.

You've officially been bitten by the VTEC bug. Just wait until you drive one and you hit that magical 5200-5250rpm then the whole world sounds like that video. Ask Boz, he'll vouch for me

I ran mine on 87. *shrugs* But, you do realize you will get better MPG in the Prelude than an American car don't you? Drive it slow and you can get north of 30mpg. That's the whole point of VTEC, drive slow and you get MPG but when you want power drive the hell out of it to get that performance profile on the cam. :D

Here's a video of a Civic that is just insane. This proves that you can have a respectable Civic that isn't rice--but is fast at the same time. Just listen to how loud it gets when the cam switches profiles. He's a member here and hangs out in the Honda Fan Club thread.

I also owned one of these...and it didn't sound like a rubber band.

No apology necessary - it's your opinion. It's, you know, wrong and all, but it's your opinion...

Get up-close and personal with one - they don't generally photograph well, but they don't half stand out in real life. Get inside one - a friend of mine has been around mine for some time, but declared as soon as he sat inside it that he wanted one. Start one up (I'll do a JCE-style video of mine if you like - and mine's stock). Drive one - putting it into 5th at 7mph never gets old.

It fits all of your 5 conditions - and takes regular gas.

That 4cyl still sounds bad to me, don't get me wrong though. I say that compared to a 6 or an 8cyl (yes I like the sound of some 6cyls, they need right exhaust). For a 4cyl it sounds good, and I have respect for a car that sounds good for what it is. I see an HSV Astra VXR in my area that sounds OK too, and I'm told that the 260hp I4 from the Solstice/other GM cars sounds awesome. So 4cyls can sound good, for a 4cyl. Compared to a 6 or 8cyl they sound bad IMO.

A typical American V6 in a VS Commodore Buick V6) Listen to that idle listen to him rev it. It's bad-ass, but the video makes it sound a little high pitched in some spots if you listen real carefully. And some can sound much better. Plus he didn't rev it much in this video.

My sound card is broken on this computer right now, but I'll be back to hear those. If a Prelude will run 30 MPG and kick some ass up high, that's awesome, but is the insurance sky high? And what is the City rating?

I'll have to see it in person then. 5th gear at 7mph? Dang. That sounds like the one time I put my moms escape in 3rd from a dead stop. 0-15 in 5 seconds! Lol.

Astra=Gorgeous, but out of my price range :guilty::grumpy:

Insurance can be high depending on alot of factors. It does have a medium-high symbol rating here in Texas. The city MPG hovers around 22-24 I believe. I never achived this because I just drove like a speed demon. Driving in the performance cam profile as much as possible has a tendancy to reduce your gas mileage considerably.

I also wanted to drop this car by you to gauge your opinion.

As far as I'm concerned this is a masterpiece of Japanese design, comfort, usability, street manners, and performance (turbo). It ticks all the right boxes for me.

80's model japanese cars leave a sour taste in my mind. MOST of them are about dead. Personally *prepares to be shot* I'd take the 240SX or a 1999 Eclipse if I went japanese.

I've been looking more into V8 F150's as of the last couple days actually. Alright mileage, good looks (personal taste), american, and with a V8, so bolting on a performance muffler over the OEM one should give it the growl of a 300 horsepower Mustang. Not to mention they're gettable as manuals:cheers:

The 9th gen (1990-1997) F150 had an option for the (351 windsor) 5.8L V8--which you should get. Those are monsters with turbos and or superchargers. Stock they are 210bhp (non-Lightning) and 325 torques. They are quite quick and have a HELL of a passing gear. 1992 and the 1993 have the good facelift and the only 4spd manual options. But, DUE keep in mind the 5.8L is a gas HOG. 12/17 city/highway--and thats if you drive it conservatively. My brother has a 1988 F150 with that engine swapped in and he is lucky to get 10mpg. Awsome truck through, and they look the best in white, black, and fire engine red.

Please don't get a truck, there's enough of them and fourbies out there already.

PS- How does a 2tonne V8 aerodynamic brick of a truck get good fuel mileage???

And if I went Japanese (which I wouldn't), I'd get a Supra.

The engine is enticing as hell, but I couldn't stomach those gas costs. 16 MPG is as low as I will go in City mileage.

Ok I'll import me a Aussie commodore Ute then lol.

They get like 17/21 I believe.

I'd hate to see insurance on one of those, although I'd love to own one. My uncle has an 80's one and I love it!

My '94 model gets 10L/100km combined. That means I get 28.2mpg combined.
Does your Uncle really have an '80s model? They have an older engine and are heavier I believe, plus they are carby so they would get slightly worse mileage. Insurance isn't bad for one in Australia, I bet after a LHD conversion and after importing it the price might rise though

Theres proof a car with good mileage doesnt have to be ugly as all get out!

He does, it's pretty cool. Late 80s, pretty cool.

I'd drive RHD. No problem, I shift for my mom even when I'm sitting in the passenger seat, so I got that down pat. lol.

OH! Flaw to your measurements. 100KM=62 Miles. 4L=3.6Gal. That's 17.2 mpg

Is RHD legal in the States? If you somehow managed an early '90s Commodore Ute you would know you're the only one on the block who has one. (Maybe the country?)

Yup.Very legal. Jeep even has an RHD option for the wrangler from the factory.

They're out of your price range anyway, then there's shipping costs and everything else involved with imports.
What Buicks could you get? Are any RWD?

Ouch. Just get a Camaro/Mustang V6, I still think those are your coolest choices. Just get a K&N Air Filter, performance leads and plugs, a CAI and fuel economy will get better.

Have you thought of one of the last RWD GM Intermediates? They came in a few flavors... (Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Regal, Cutlass) Or are they too old? (Last ones in '87)

1989-91 Buick Le Sabre/Park Ave, Pontiac Bonneville, Olds 88. 3800 V6 and decent fuel economy when actually on the road.
