Then I'd have to say the Esprit was overpriced in the US, I love the Esprit but I wouldn't pay over $100k for one or ever suggest doing so was a good move. Over here you can pick up a decent Esrit for around £20k which is about $35k.

You can pick up cheap eight-year-old ones with around 35k on the clock for about the price of a new Corvette, maybe a little more.

It was underpowered, and I will always hate Lotus for not making them more available.



They aren't. LIKE EVERY SUPERCAR EVER BUILT, ALL THREE OF THOSE CARS ARE ABSOLUTE JOKES. Doesn't the Maserati Coupe do 0 to 60 in like 5.5 seconds? And the Panoz is pretty much a 911 except with crappier styling and handling and like $40k more. Supercars are for idiots.

I said Porsche and then you said Maserati and Panoz. This is because you know you can't beat my example of the 911 - it's simply a far better car. I'll give you another example: Corvette. Find me one reason why I would get an Esprit ($100k+) over an '05 Corvette ($43700).

What'cha talking about? The Maser Coupe does 0-60 in 4.7 (You know, faster than the 2005 CLK55 AMG)
The Panoz is $92k, about $20k more than a base 911. Let's not exaggerate. Mkauy?
The Esprit was priced in the $80-$90k range, not $100k+, Mkauy?


Here's why I compare the Esprit to the Esperante and Coupe. They're all competitors. It's a niche market. OBVIOUSLY, You don't fall into that market group. Some people do.

A Kleemann CLK55 would easily stomp on an Esprit V8 at the strip. And a normal CLK55 would come close, which is comical since a CLK driver paid $35k less and has more features and car that's almost quicker.

For starters, the CLK driver paid aroudn $10k less, not $35k. can we try to keep the exaggeration to a minimum? That'd be greeeaaaat.
Also, you do know the Esprit does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds (That's half a second faster than the CLK55, for referance)

The previous owner had our car for 4 years. Does it work that if something went wrong with the car when he had it, that the new part will be reliable and that the problem is fixed?

I'm hoping that in 4 years some of the problems have been fixed.

I guess some cars just leave the factory as 'wrong-uns' :irked:

My dads X-type estate is only 1000miles old - ultra reliable so far, but who knows!
 
OK, we picked up our new car today! From the outside the car looks absolutely brand new, and we had a coat of "Superguard" put on it to make it look better. :D

The engine is ultra smooth, as well as the transmission and the low speed ride is alot smoother than the Mazda 6 too. :)

The only problems we have is there is a rattle somewhere, possibly the glovebox because it went away when we opened it and the other problem is that one of the buttons to work the air-conditioning needs to be pressed pretty hard to work.

I have a few concerns about quality, the front armrest is so loose and rattly that I think it will break every time I open it. :sick: Other than this the quality is great.

All of the problems put aside, it is a great car. :)

Me, Mum and Dad have helped clean the car and leather to help it feel more like ours now, and it looks great.

My brother was talking on MSN. Lazy bum. :lol:

Only kidding, anyway, the keyfob on its own (helped along with the phrase "I'll just go get the Jag") gets the knickers off quicker than you can say "Mondeo-based".


And Doug's only bagging the Esprit to wind me up. The fact he's only seen 1 V8 ever isn't testament to how rubbish they are, but to the fact that Lotus didn't officially sell the V8 (other than the 8 downgraded "Sport350" models that even Lotus don't class as Sport350s) in the US, and only 1,500 were ever built anyway... :D
 
RHD doesn't sell well in the US.

Did they ever crash-test them, to US DOT's satisfaction?
 
I'm fairly sure they were LHD - I can't remember the last time the US market was offered a non-LHD car. A guy about 20min from here has a 4-cylinder. I'm going out, I'll swing by and have a look.

And because of Lotus's low volume status, I'm not sure that they were ever subject to crash-testing.
 
Lotus sent 100 (or was it 200) LHD V8 Esprit's stateside a year. I remember, my dad looked heavily at buying one in '04. (Autostrada, Aus, TX, official Lotus dealer). But, the cars didn't move quickly. (Even though it's the only authorized Lotus dealer in TX) -- They had used Esprits that would it on the floor for months, even years before they'd sell. But, I believe that all of the 2-5 Esprit's they got a year were quick sellers.
 
Checking into it, the V8 was the third highest-volume Esprit that Lotus made. It shifted off forecourts like a dose of salts too - they shifted as many as they could make in 1996 - only 5 years saw a better single-model production run.


Out of interest, Doug, which Elise do you like more? The Rover-engined S1 or the Toyota-engined S2?

Yeah thanks. Lets just hope our car holds up, there are rattles appearing and dissapearing everytime I get into the car. When one goes away, another appears. :D
 
Congrats on the new car!

I'm surprised you're having problems with it.
We had a '97 XJR --- NO problems except for the engine not cooling down at 71k miles (And my mom totally the side of it with her Lexus).
We drove that car from 0 to 82k.

No idea - the US only got the second one, and I haven't even driven one yet so I can't speculate too much.

It might interest you (slightly) to know, however, that out of pure curiosity I e-mailed our local Toyota dealer asking them if they'd service "my" Elise. They replied that they do not service that type of car at their dealership. I thought that was interesting.

Didn't get a chance to get by that Esprit, but I think it's LHD - I'll try to have another go at it. I actually have a picture of it on my hard-drive but it's too hard to tell whether it's LHD or RHD from it. Either way, since it's a 4-cylinder, it doesn't really answer the question anyway. :D
 
Really? I thought the former Elise was imported only in small quantities- There was one at ParkPlaceLTD in Bellevue, WA, in Jan, 05.
 
Perhaps it was imported the same way Motorex imports Skylines, but the US didn't receive any offical Elises until this spring.

You are correct, the old Elise WAS imported by Park Place LTD in limited quantities. But it was not street legal, and you may only drive it on a racetrack/private property, etc. If you wanted to move it around from one place to another, you had to put it on a trailer or something. Now they sell the new Elise too, several days ago they had 4 just sitting outside. :drool:

I find that perfectly natural! Volvo used Renault engines for many years, still you didn't go with your Volvo to Renault saying: "I want my Volvo fixed!"

Lotus might have done some tuning/de-tuning to the engine, so it's logical that Toyota does not or cannot have the responsibilty to service them.

I believe that there was a semi-official agreement that you could get the drivetrain of any K-Series engined car at any Rover dealership, whatever the car was.

If any tuning was done, it was minimal; Toyota uses that engine for a maximum of 180 horsepower, where it produces 190 in the Elise. And it's not like they don't know how to service it in mid-rear setup, since the MR2 Spyder uses a version of the engine.

I just figured a Toyota dealer wouldn't want to turn down the business.
 
The gearbox is Toyota as well.
Lotus wrote their own engine management and added an oil cooler, I can't find any other differences.

If there is some sort of agreement it's okay. But I've never heard of an agreement whatsoever between Toyota and Lotus.

Okay, I have mis-interpreted your post! It seemed to me that you were stating that Toyota should service the Elise/Exige. I apologize for my usual stupidity :guilty:

I'ts curious because that engine produces 192hp in Europe...but I think it also has a little less torque.

It's used on The Celica TSport (Wich I believe is your GT-S) and the Corolla TSport (I'm not sure it's the same Corolla you have in the U.S.! I think that particular car you know it as the Matrix)

It's in GT4 too, only the name in the game is: Toyota Corolla RunX Z Aero Tourer ('02)

What's it called in the U.S?
 
The only agreement between Lotus and Toyota is for Toyota to supply some engines for some Lotus cars. I haven't read of, nor heard of any other agreement betwen the two. Toyota don't supply all the drivetrain for all Lotuses, Elises over here don not have Toyota engines.

I think you'll find they do, especially since the K-series is no more (or will be soon).
 
I don't think they are Toyota engined yet, I tried to check before but I couldn't open Lotus' web site.

Maybe your right, I haven't noticed anything yet though.

The Elise & Elise 111S still use the K-series (for now)

The Elise 111R, Exige and Exige 240R all use the Toyota 2ZZ-GE.
