My grumble thread for FH4

  • No new wheels, they've used the old models from the Xbox 360 days, no staggered wheels, deeper dishes or any adjustment for them.
  • Loads of "normal" cars have been sacrificed for supercars, the models are there so can easily be added
  • New bodykits are horrendous, same old copy and paste front splitter with canards and spoilers from old games
  • Still no interior customisation
  • Online mode not as good as FH3 and even that was flawed
  • The clothes are crap, wheelspins for them are especially crap
  • The voice acting and cutscenes made me die inside when sitting through them. Not even skippable which makes it worse.
  • They've removed some engine swaps, my favourite car in FH3 was my A45 AMG with the SLS V8 in it lol.
Apart from this i'm enjoying the game, who else has some grumbles?

They could make the favourites list easier to find and accessible when on the road.

My bad, I found out where to filter on favourites.

Most of your list are some of my personal gripes as well, mostly those with the customization. Seasonal events being uneditable - makes it difficult to get through the pack on tight technical tracks when you only have 3 laps to do so on pro/unbeatable.

Because I spend lots of time in photomode:
Not being able to turn off/on the headlights at will. Makes taking photos from the front a bit difficult at times.
Motion blur no longer keeps the quality of the vehicle in focus - Forza 7 had it so no matter how much motion blur you applied, the car would not lose quality because of it.
Photomode being removed from the pause menu, and if you press your brakes for some illumination they don't stick when you go in photomode with the hotkey.

My main grumble is that I'm permanently disconnected from the game servers it seems (server issues), so I'm basically running in solo campaign, plus the popup message on top is annoying.
Assorted grumbles:
Grumble 1 - Other than the Timeless radio station and its ironic DJ, all the other radio stations are crap (I'm not a young guy, yet I found most of the soundtracks of FH2 and 3 much more enjoyable). Also, I wish that the Timeless station would feature more British/Scottish classical content.
Grumble 2 - There have been instances where my progress in the Forzathon challenges is reset for no reason (!).
Grumble 3 - The menu layout in general.
Grumble 4 - The reuse of concept cars (Infinity Q60-Lamborghini Urus), at this point their real retail versions have been available for some time.
Grumble 5 - It seems there is no way to overwrite/delete your created blueprints (!)
Grumble 6 - It seems that the side missions (stunt driver, world's fastest, the racing videogames homage) do not notify you that the next stage is available (I know it opens immediately after you finish one, but it's not apparent).

And yet, I'm having a good time in general.

Grumble 5 - It seems there is no way to overwrite/delete your created blueprints (!)
You can overwrite, you just can't delete for some reason. When creating a new layout just save over the previous ones*.

*If that's not it, I believe you select the one you want to change, and edit the settings and then save over it again. I'll have to double check when I get home because now im second guessing myself. I do know you can though.

What happened is that after creating, saving and racing one, I wanted to edit it, however it seems you can only select it to race from the list of your personal blueprints.

You can(and I have) save over them. I'm just away from my console right now so I can't recall exactly how until I get home.

My biggest gripe is how the progression system still doesn't demand something like top three finishes for progress. Theoretically you can drive and perform like absolute 🤬 and the characters will still tell you how everything about the effort is top notch, eventually unlocking every event leading to stardom. Not the most rewarding progression system for players who perform quite well.

I agree with this, but maybe there's hope to see some of them in future rounds of the Forzathon Shop. :nervous:

My biggest pet peeve with the game's PC version at this moment is the borked LoD and AF settings. I'm quite nitpicky when it comes to graphics, so I get annoyed with all those pop-ins. Y'know, those just break immersion...

Also, the car list precludes some obscure British (super)cars that would have fit the car roster. Where did the Storm and XJR-15 go? :D

Otherwise, I dig this game far more than FH3.

"Loads of "normal" cars have been sacrificed for supercars, the models are there so can easily be added"

This is by far my biggest gripe. Lots of cars from FH3 have been ditched in favour of sports/super/hyper cars (boring...but kids like these cars so that probably explains it *sigh*)

Where's my Volvo Amazon, AMC 'The Machine' or 69' Falcon? 3 of favourite cars from FH3 :grumpy:

Plus, since its set in Britain they really have missed a trick with cars the could have added, normal everyday cars such as old BMC cars like the Austin Allegro, Marina, Maxi, Princess, A60, Rover SD1, P5, P6 etc.

Or old Fords like Mk3/4/5 Cortina, Mk1/2 Granada etc.

You know, fun cars that would be a laugh to tune up.

Come on who wouldn't want a big V8 powered Rover SD1 drift machine?

I'm having the same issue as you. I chalked it up to bad internet connection on my end but I dunno what the problem really is.

My biggest gripe, still, is not being able to adjust the season when I want to (in Free Roam), but I have high hopes that will become an option later on in the future. As a photographer in the game it would be nice to change that.

Not that I'm complaining or anything. ;)

"Loads of "normal" cars have been sacrificed for supercars, the models are there so can easily be added"

Unfortunately, when you read the comments or watch the most popular youtubers; it's mainly about supercars, widebody cars and drift cars...

The soundtrack is miles behind previous Horizons... :( That's my biggest grumble.
I thought about this and with regard to Hospital in particular, I think the emphasis on all original songs means that artists (or whoever is in charge of music curation) haven't necessarily provided their best work for the channel this time around (eg Rok Da House) as opposed to the hit orientated approach of previous iterations of the series.

This isn't really an excuse where Bass Arena is concerned though. I'm not quite as concerned about that since the Scott Tyler character is quite the annoying a-hole so I don't tune into him as much.

Block Party was fine for me this time around though,

The online/PvP element of the game is quite lackluster. There's no "proper" PvP outside of festival races, and the "alert" for those races is really easy to miss so, unsurprisingly, people often don't join. Then the dedicated PvP is team based, which creates a situation of eve if you're a fast racer, you still lose because your team isn't up to par. Ranked is also a mess not just because of the aforementioned team system, but also due to the gme seemingly refusing to get 12 players together in a timely manner, and then when it does come together, there's a decent chance of the lobby falling apart before a car can be selected.

As far as the soundtrack, I primarily listen to Block Party, Hospital, and whatever rock station(s) are in the game. Block Party and Hospital are imo miles better than they were in FH3, and they were already solid there. XS is overall a step down from Vagrant and Epitaph combined. I've never liked Bass Arena or Pulse after FH1, save for maybe 2 or 3 songs.

I totally agree with most of your points. I wish that when you go to buy a car from the Festival or whatever, it would be like actually buying a car. Interior colors, options, OEM colors, OEM wheels, and so on. That would be so amazing. As it stands now I find customization pretty lame, especially with muscle cars, cause the parts are identical.

I don't really like racing with modern supercars or hypercars either, so I can see where you're coming from.

But I don't know how many of the cars have really been sacrificed for supercars though. Sure, some cars from FH3 are gone, and taking them out when they could easily just lengthen the list is baffling, but a good number of the cars they were replaced with weren't Super/hyper/ricer cars. Some were, of course, like the Chiron from FM7, but the game wouldn't be complete without those either, and that's only a few of them. For one, many of the Vintage Racers from Motorsport were added, (Which I am very happy about. I love old race cars) along with oddities like the Caddy limo and the Mercedes Racing truck. Plus many of the cars finally returning from FM4 are older D-class type cars. And taking a look at the "new to Forza" cars, a good many of them are not supercars.

New to Forza (Base game, not counting car pass or Bond DLC or Formula Drift Pack)
-1965 Austin FX4 taxi
-1931 Bentley 4-1/2 Litre Supercharged
-1931 Bentley 8-Litre
-2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon
-2018 Ford Mustang GT
-2017 Ford #14 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing GRC Fiesta
-2017 Ford M-Sport Fiesta RS
-1986 Ford Escort RS Turbo
-1964 Ford GT40 Mk I
-1959 Ford Anglia 105E
-1964 Jaguar Lightweight E-Type
-1973 Land Rover Range Rover
-2018 McLaren Senna
-2014 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U5023
-1958 Morris Minor 1000
-1962 Peel P50
-1962 Triumph Spitfire
-2017 Volkswagen #34 Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle
-1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI
-1969 Volkswagen Class 5/1600 Baja Bug
-2016 Volvo Iron Knight

The Senna and the Dodge Demon are really the only new supercars. There are a couple "normal everyday" cars, like the Ford Escort, Ford Anglia, '73 Range Rover, Morris Minor, and '83 golf. Sure, there are some cars here that I would much rather have been replaced with something else, like the Mustang (Who needs another one?) or maybe one of the Fiesta variants, but other than that I think it's a solid group of newcomers. And who's to say some of the cars you listed won't come in the car pass or expansions?

Are there less cars in general this year? It kinda feels like it.

My main gripes are as follows.

1) Less normal or sporty road cars in general, this really sucks since the UK is known for making more hot hatch and classic cars rather then Supercars and since they went out of their way to include a lot of Australian cars in FH3 it just seems strange to not include more of them
2) Most of the clothing is just plain bad
3) It seems harder to get money in general with wheelspins including clothing, emotes and horns (most of which are pretty bad) as well as cars and money. This problem is only compounded with houses being included, some of which are crazy expensive (and worth it due to perks from purchasing some and early on being the only locations to fast travel to)

Two big issues for me that have pervaded the Horizon series for years:

1) The rubberbanding. It's ridiculous. Seeing a car that should, by all rights, be nothing in comparison to your car zip up on you going 40 mph faster is utterly immersion-breaking.
2) The thing where the AI upgrade cars that are far inferior to yours to be competitive. Again, it shatters immersion seeing a Ford Focus easily giving a Mercedes 300 SLR a run for its money. Cease.

Now, do I think both of these things should be removed completely? No, I can see why some would like these. Instead, I think there should be difficuly options to disable both of them. I'd gladly win less money if it meant I got to enjoy the actual racing more.

I'm experiencing far less pronounced rubberbanding in FH4 than I did in FH3. Also keep in mind that opponent cars are balanced to match the performance index rating of the player's car. Sometimes this rating can be higher on AI cars than it is on your own car, which could explain why you are being overtaken by cars you normally wouldn't expect to be faster.

  • The game forces you into the map to play more of its crap dialogue. And then when the dialogue stops it won't let you leave the map screen until you set your waypoint to something. And then you have to set it, then go back into the pause menu to unset it. In a game about being free to do whatever you want it does seem to passively aggressively push events at you.
  • Clothing items only being obtainable through wheelspins, so you end up with a character wearing a stupid outfit because it's all you have so far.
  • The emotes aren't funny as a result of being pop culture dance moves, it's more funny as a coping mechanism of discomfort and embarrassment.
  • The AI seem to be doing more weird swerving on the straights than normal.
  • Music still plays in the loading screens even if you turn music down to 1 in the audio menu.
  • I'm still pissed off that they took away my Alpine GTA.

The rubberbanding is nowhere near as bad as FH3. I have noticed the AI can be very wayward at times though.

I was doing a street race last night. I was 2nd trying to catch the leading AI car. There was a tight bend before the finish line and the AI just completely forget to brake and skated straight on, missing the checkpoint and handing me the win

Can't recall this happening in FH3? More realistic I guess.

This was kinda my point, there's so many iconic British cars they haven't included, especially given the amount of Aussie cars included in FH3.

Hopefully some of these will be included in future DLC packs though. I just can't understand why they have cut so many cars that were in FH3? The models exist so why not just include them? there aren't hurting anyone.

Some minor grumbles:
  • While I am glad they got rid of the spastic/ seizure inducing after-race animations, they still take forever to get through. Just level me up and dump me back on the road please.
  • Why, after a dirt race (for example) does my car completely clean itself immediately upon crossing the finish line? Put it on full display covered in dirt!
  • When you turn off certain HUD items, it takes others with it. For example, turn off the pop up and skill points, the radio display goes away too. (I could be wrong here, but either way, there aren't enough specific HUD options)
  • Same as FH3, but there are only like 3-4 songs that play when you enter a race (before starting the race) and after the race so it's extremely repetitive.
  • Related to the last grumble, those 3-4 songs will play at various points during a race (where the spectators are) even if you have the radio off. So you will learn to hate those 3-4 songs!
  • The game forces you into the map to play more of its crap dialogue. And then when the dialogue stops it won't let you leave the map screen until you set your waypoint to something. Yeah, that's annoying, but there is a trick to it. When they are done talking, instead of selecting a waypoint, you can select "Horizon Life" (by hitting Start or whatever it is on Xbox), back out and it lets you leave the map without selecting a waypoint.

I'm evaluating FH4 so much, but there are still some complaints.

- Some lies
: They said many cars have roof racks [*1]. But it can not be seen at all. (Although it exists in traffic, there is nothing added for the player's car [*2])

- Where is Ford Ranger Raptor? : Ford and they said that 2019 Ford Ranger Raptor was available at FH4 launch. But it does not exist in the blueprints and they do not explain why it is not present and the addition to the game is behind schedule.

- Many locked cars : I'm enjoying this system as well. However, there is also dissatisfaction with this system at the same time. Like Xbox 360 era Forza, unlocked cars should be available for purchase at the auto show. Also, while Ferrari has many cars, but their cars not locked. I know the relationship between Microsoft and Ferrari, but I felt unfair for their preferential treatment to Ferrari. [*3]

- No new rims : Wheel lineup is the same as FH3.

- New body kit: What they added were Rocket Bunny, Liberty Walk, RWB, and some "Forza" brands. Yeah, these brands again.

- Autumn and rain : We are playing the autumn season. However, with the default settings of many of the this season's road racing events it is raining. I need to make an event with a blueprint just to play a sunny race.

*1 :
https://ar12gaming.com/articles/new-forza-horizon-4-info-released (*One of the interviews I confirmed remarks about their roof rack. I remember that there were similar articles on other websites.)
*2 : Although it exists in some cars such as Audi R8, it is all existing parts.
*3 : Except 812 Superfast added in the update.

I remember in Forza 4 there was an option to toggle whether the AI upgraded their cars to the top of their class or kept them stock. It would be nice to see this come back at some point, but honestly I'm not bothered by the AI upgrading their cars as it keeps the racing close.

Besides needing to drive on the left side of the road, my other grumble is the horrific avatar modeling. All the models look like some sorts of Jersey Shore rejects. Also, would it kill them to have one character with a beard?

Why, after a dirt race (for example) does my car completely clean itself immediately upon crossing the finish line? Put it on full display covered in dirt!

One of the radio DJ's pokes fun at this. But ya, it's a bit weird.

We're driving around Scotland in this game, so where's the kilt? There's a plaid skirt, but that's not the same.

You mean the CORRECT side of the road? ;)

But I agree, the avatars look like a bunch of hipsters from a McDonalds advert. None of them look remotely like me. Where's the fat bloke with a beard and long hair? :irked:
