im getting a new laptop for college. ive never owned a laptop before, and i was wondering what peripherials to get. ill give u a little info about my comp, but please dont bash it, because there is nothing i can do to change it. i had to buy a comp from the college, and i only had 3 choices.

-Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHz
-512MB DDR-SDRAM
-40GB Ultra ATA 100 UIDE hard drive
-15.0" TFT SXGA+ Color Display (whatever that means)
-ATI Mobility Radeon M7 32 MB video card
-floppy disk, cd-rw/dvd

what should i get, and how much do u think it would be for each item. i was thinking about a wireless optical mouse. and maybe some speakers to play music and sound from games.

by the way, will my computer play games well? i will have broadband connection.

i dont know that much about computers, and less about laptops. the only game ive ever owned for computer was Medal of Honor allied assault. i have too slow a connection at home to play games.

any input would be appreciated.

Well, I would skip the speakers, and use some high quality headphones....

, and congrats on the new-to-be comp.

really? skip on the speakers? why.

i was thinking i wouldn not bring a boom box, and instead get speakers for my comp. that way i could listen to cds and mp3s on my comp.

and the subwoofer and speakers for games is cool.

Congratulations.
It sounds like a good computer. And that ATI card should be good with games. I'm not too sure about that, though.

You might want to live with the computer first for a bit to get a better idea on what you'll want for it. Speakers or headphones would be good. Speakers need to be designed for computer use, of course, and have amps built in somewhere.

I used headphones mostly with my laptop (esp at work). There are some really nice ones. I'd recommend trying out the Koss Sporta headphones if you want the small, light walkman kind. But, for about $70, there are full sized Grado SR-60s which are outstanding. They're an open design, too, so you can still hear a lot of what's going on around you if you don't crank 'em to dangerous levels. If you've never heard deep, audiophile-quality sound, these'll probably amaze you. They'll certainly be better than any computer speaker set up I know of. But listening to headphones for too long can get tedious.

Anyway, if you're going to be writing a lot, you may want to get a separate keyboard. This depends on how comfortable the laptop's board is--they vary quite a bit--but they're generally smaller and are; well, just different.

If you really want to go out, with most brands you can get a docking station. Basically, it's a small frame that you push the laptop into, and can hook up a full sized monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc directly into it. So it's a lot like having a full sized computer, but you can eject the laptop and take it with you. The last place I worked had this system. Everyone got a laptop and had a docking station at his/her desk. (So you could work all day then take it home and work some more.)

You said you're going to use broadband? That's very cool, but MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SERIOUS, UP-TO-DATE virus protection and a firewall. This is important anyway, but with broadband you're even more at risk. I'd say that's the biggie.

Well, I'm not sure if this helps are not, but there's my list.

cool. thanks for the info. the keyboard might be a good idea. i have a feeling i will be doing lots of typing. papers and such

I'd definitely listen to Sertsa about the additional keyboard. I, personally, haven't ever seen a laptop with a keyboard that I found to be comfortable enough to actually type an e-mail on let alone an entire paper for an English class or something similar.

by the way, im pretty sure its windows 2000, not XP.

if that makes any difference.

It does make a difference, a lot of difference. Windows xp has the worst security ever. I have windows xp and before i downloaded tons of security updates i bet i had tons of hackers messing around with my computer.

This is a warning to anyone who is getting a computer, do not get windows xp. Don't be temp into getting this because it fast and so(It was even said to have great security which is a load of bull). If you are getting a computer get windows 2000 or ME even if its windows 95. In the you end you will thank me.

No, if anyone gets ME they won't be thanking you... trust me on that one. XP kicks the crap out ME for sure. As for the other security issues you've addressed... all I can say is I've had no problems at all with it. Flawless on this end.

sure xp is great but what about the security.
Whold you like to have a computer that is fast but has crap security or whold you have a slow computer but with great security?

I was talking about everything below windows xp, i was not talking about ME

ME sucks as its like a wierd mix between 2K and 98.
ME is the worst Windows M$ put out.

ScarySquirrel said xp kicks the crap out of it. and he said something like if someone got windows ME they wouldnt be thanking u.
