ATI makes some of the best "Laptop archetecture" graphics cards on the market today. I doubt he can fit a GF4 in his soon-to-be laptop. :) The reason I'm saying this is because for an "Upgrade", you would expect increased performance, not just a different name. I would just be leary going with nVidia, based on their PCI/AGP (Desktop) version cards and GPU's....

Well if you're seriously thinking about those external speakers I'd definitely check out the Klipsch 2.1 ProMedia speakers. Those are what I've got and they are probably some of the best speakers I've ever heard.

You can also check out the Klipsch 5.1 ProMedia if you want surround sound... but with a dorm and probably the price range you're looking into that might not work for you. I know they were too expensive for me. :(

Definitely. I wouldn't put an ATI card in a desktop PC, but in laptops, they're very good indeed. Which is odd really, since you would expect the core architecture of the hardware to be quite similar. It's the drivers in the desktops that I hate.

yah i think i would be going with 2.1 sound system (2 speakers/ 1 sub).

i dont think i will be changing any of the hardware in my comp, like the graphics card. how good is my card, for playing video games and such. i really dont know that much about the cards on the market today.

i was thinking about a cordless mouse/keyboard, but they eat batteries. i might just get a reagular, with-a-cord keyboard and mouse. what are good brands? all i know of is logitec.
