How would they know when you bought it? Couldn't you make up a date? I returned my xbox to walmart without a receipt, and they had no idea when it was purchased. If walmart didn't know, I don't know how sony would know. Could you call them back and just lie, or have you wife, brother, etc. call for you, if they have already taken your name.

you might be able to get to the system recovery menu if your lucky. hold down the power button until you here 2 consecutive beeps this should send you to the system recovery menu. then hook up the controler via USB when prompted and just follow what it tells you. it might fix the console but if its a Hardware problem your screwed and get on the phone and ship it to sony.

which light went yellow? was it the usually green power light or the usually blue light that shows you have disc in?

do you know what could have caused the problem? if it's overheating like the RROD for the 360 my friend told me something to fix that.

I think thats because MS had agreed to replace all faulty consoles regardless of reciept seeing as the reliability was so poor. Because the PS3's reliability is quite high im sure it will be a more tedious process to get it fixed.

As for the yellow light try taking out the HDD and putting it back in again, it might be due to a loose connection. Failing that try the system recovery menu.

I know your pain. My 60Gb died a few weeks ago while playing Mercs 2. After looking into the issue and realizing that it was the famed YLOD i soon went to me local game-stop and got a brand new 80Gb. A few months back there were some frequent power outtages for a week or two, i figure this contributed to the demise due to the fact that my PC also had a power supply failure and had to replace that also. It is a fact of life that electronics fail all we can do is roll with the punches and have some money in the bank just in case :)

What kind of HDD you going to put it?
I would recommend a faster one and more memory. It really does improve speeds a bit. Not by half, but always shaves seconds (second here second there) off

If it won't work, keep it for new model

i just took the HDD out ,cleaned everything and put it back in but no luck...:ouch::ouch::ouch:
a friend of mine has a spare HDD and will come by tomorrow to see what happends if i put that one in..
if this also makes no difference it should be something else wich i have to call sony for to get it fixed or replaced...

ohhh mannnnnn,what a BUMMER all this!!!!:nervous:

My Playstation has died:grumpy:.Last Night while i was playing a game,my system went in to meltdown, beep beep beep and shut its self down.no warning,no flashing lights, nothing.I plugged it out and left it for a while thinking it had overheated:dunce:,turned it back on hit the button and the green light shows, great i was thinking..but no it went back off and left me with a flashing red light...ITS dead.at least that is what the lady in customer support said..(yes it has overheated and it will not come back on).She knew straight away what the buzz was. This leads me to think that sony have made a boo boo.The manual says if it overheats, just plug it out and leave it to cool down, then just switch it back on.But the support people say,its over heated and needs to be replaced due to an issue with the consoles..my 1year warranty ran out a few months back.So i cant just bring it back to the shop i bought it from and get it replaced, like they suggested i do.Just thought i would share this with you gtp folk, and incase people are wondering...i look after my 650euro ps3 system, the air vents are cleaned of any dust at least twice a month,it has plenty of air going around it.And yet it still died..:grumpy:

Have you tried contacting Consumer Direct or Which for some advice. They are very helpfull and may have a solution to your dilemma.

EDIT: If the woman at Sony Customer Service says that it is a known issue with PS3's overheating, surely they should repair/replace at no cost to you.

Yes i have been on to those guys as well, and they say i will get an email in the next 5to10 working days from sony/ps3 people.plus the guy on the other end says i must have misunderstood the lady,as this does not happen very often:mad:..I think i may end up having to buy a new one, although the local game store has a managers special on 80gb ps3 with two games/two controllers/two year warranty and 100euros worth of vouchers and all for only 469euros.I cant go 5to10 days without my games,i am already starting to get cabin fever :ill:

spyrrari I thought everyone has a 2 year warrenty with Sony for the PS3?

That's what I was thinking also, IIRC my PS3 has a 2 year warranty. Have to check that out.

Spyrrari, theewar, all I can say is that I feel your pain and hope you sort it out soon. :indiff:

theewar, welcome to the club of pain!!!...

well,i have bought a new 80gb ps3 with 2 games for free for 399euros...
i also called sony etc etc...but i am not going to pay them 240euros for a 2nd hand reviced one they offered to send me if i would send them my dead ps3...i mean really..are they nuts??...

if you check out the net this problem is occuring more often than people think, but mostly with the 1,2-2 year old models, and mostly with the 60gb ones..................

so,i just bought a new one and got over with it,allthough i still have a headacke about it...

sony...you give us loyal customers so much joy...why o why do you treat us so bad when something goos wrong???????....

SIGH........

am I the only one who has mechanical problems with his machines? I've never had these overheating problems except with computers (mostly because our area is notorious for power surges and Thunderstorms). in my machines, something always physically breaks off.

I think that if you live in an area with an unstable power supply (due to storms etc) then your chances of having the machine damaged by surges or outtages is a lot higher. I would seriously recommend that you buy a circuit breaker or one of those surge protectors for your machine or if your really worried buy a UPS power supply so you can power down the machine properly if an outtage occurs.

I know PS3 failures are few and far between but it is worrying to see many of the newer machines breaking. My mates 40GB just died on him last week and he took it back to Sony (its still under warranty). Those are ment to be the ones which produce less heat and therefore should be more reliable.

Robin: our power surge problem has finally been solved. a couple years ago, new electric poles with new lines, both phone and power, were finally strung in our area. I believe most of the old connections and poles dated from the sixties and before. america still has a lot of space that needs updates to its infrastructures. they're still using century old poles in areas, here. and don't even MENTION America's railways...

Why would you not have your electronics protected by a good surge protector? I mean you'd have to be an idiot just to plug something like that into a wall outlet. If you can't afford a surge protector (and if you can afford a PS3 you can afford a good surge protector) then at the very least unplug your stuff when a storm is rolling it.

I know the feeling! In the UK some infrastructure stuff is centuries old... we have copper phone lines which are useless for Broadband and they have been there since the Victorians! :scared: But slowly they are rolling out fibre optics etc. I do have to say though power supply in the UK is very stable, the only thing that knocks it out is the odd lightning storm or when England has a world cup game. :sly:

I have a one plug surge protector for my PS3, nothing fancy but it should be enough to protect it from any sudden suprises. Whenever I hear thunder I turn off all my stuff and switch it off at the mains anyway (in the UK all wallsockets have an off switch).

Joey: even a surge protector can only take so many surges. we had a NASTY case of antique infrastructure.

at least you don't have to replace hundreds of thousands of miles of wiring in one county...I think about 75 by 75 miles, here. heck, it took over a decade after cable company establishments for them to be able to afford to send the lines out here.

LOL always with football (i literally laughed out loud, too). this would explain a lot about trying to get on on Superbowl Sunday, here :P

That's why I said a good surge protector, one of these cheap $20 are crap. My surge protector for my TV and game consoles was $175 I think as it's one of the best ones I could find. I'm sure there are better ones out there though. My computer is hooked up to a similar thing as a power surge did blow my previous protector and fried my power supply. Seriously if you are going to have nice things you need to protect them.

we automatically unplugged everytime a thunderstorm even VAGUELY threatened. it STILL fried the regulators in the last comp. of course, we were talking about several line surges a DAY, plus activation and deactivation of several large appliences.

I had my ps3 crap out a while back, stopped reading any and all discs. And the pain I had to go through to get it repaired because I didn't have the receipt. Oh and when I got it back from sony, something was loose inside, sounds like something near the disc drive which is what they worked on. They said I can send it back in and they will fix it.

So what do you guys do with your old ps3's after buying a new one? I would love to take two nonworking ps3's with different problems and swap parts to try and get them to work. Although I have read somewhere that some parts are mated to each individual ps3 and wont work with others, idk.

Oh and does anyone else's ps3 ever make a pop noise, mine does occasionally, probably due to whats loose.

Only problem i am having with my ps3 is that when i play GTA 4 the ventalation goes screaming after 40 minutes +/- and does not stop untill i turn my ps3 off :/ is this the beginning of the end ?

still have warranty, maybe good idea to call sony services.

i find it strange sony does not replace ps3 even after the warranty because you should expect a gaming console to last many year (2-3)...

Do you keep it in a cabinet? - Mine used to do that until i took it out of our TV cabinet and placed it vertically on top next to the TV.
