Is there any kind of alternative out there for mounting my camera on this $50 dollar tripod of mine. It's been sitting here collecting dust. I want to do long exposures badly. Any recommendations ?
You'll need to give us a little more information... Are you talking about the plate that locks onto the head of the tripod? Which tripod is this $50 tripod?

You could either search the web for a replacement quick release plate or check out Craigslist for a cheap used tripod. There a goodwill near you? Often times they'll have a tripod or two, although more seem to be broken than not. :/
