The closest you'll get, I think, is to have a wireless router and have all your friends connect to it (if they are close), and sign online, and start a race with just them.

I'd think that Lag might not be such an issue either.

ToCA 3 can do LAN, setup is really easy. There are 3 NASCAR tracks.

GRID can do LAN, probably just as easy as ToCA3. I personally, don't like how GRID feels with a wheel. It does not feel natural like GT5P or GT4. So, I don't play it much, if at all.

Can I play toca 3 and Grid offline in a LAN or just online LAN?

I typically set up a LAN with 6 or 8 players and online access is not always available.

Yes, GRID, ToCA 3, and the upcoming SuperCar Challenge will all be traditional in-home LAN, not online. No pseudo "private rooms" need to be used as a work around.

COD4 is also offline LAN, if you cared to know. My son is urging me to play it and having LAN is a big plus.

It's a kick in the teeth EA does not have LAN in it's sports games.
 
Awesome! Thanks for the info. I've been playing F1 in LAN mode offline and it's a blast. It's great to know that you're beating your buddy a few feet away... makes it easier to rub it in afterwards too!

I'm going to check out toca 3 and GRID right away

ok, no one mentioned that toca3 is ps2 only :) So I can't do that as I am looking for ps3 options. And the crazy thing is that GRID can be played in a LAN but it needs to hop online first to verify original copies of the game. I actually talked to codemasters on this just to make sure.

I'm loving LAN play on F1 and look forward to supercar challenge if it is setup the same way.

I have also checked out a aircard and wireless router setup that would allow me to login the ps3's before playing the lan game but at $60/mth and $200 in equipment, that's a little much :)

Have you tried to up the to your locker? I got an email from EA's upper tier and they are indeed working on this. The email came a week after my last call to them.
 
I bought NASCAR 09 a couple of days ago. I really like it. The handling is more realistic than NASCAR 08 on PS2, When you rub with other cars you don't always spin, crash or blowover, and obviously the graphics are awesome(not as good as GT5P).
One thing I did notice is that when I went to go and play online there were no sessions!

The EA Locker at EASportsworld.com is fully functioning again. YAY!!

I did some poking around and NASCAR 09 does not have a LAN feature. Nor, does it have private rooms. We have tested in our house and I set up a 2 player race and our other PS3 joined just fine. The race host does have the option to kick players. So, you can kinda sort of do a LAN, but not in the truest sense.

RACECAR has a killer looking GTP car!
 
Anyone playing this still?

I bought it a week back and it's a really enjoyable driving experience with a wheel.

I'd like to download some retro liveries, is that possible from within the game, I've only had a very quick look at the paint booth and not yet tried to download anything.

Oh god. To mention Nascar 09 in a forum dedicated to the GT series is like mentioning the original Wolfenstein 3D in a forum dedicated to Modern Warfare.
