In what may or may not be an April Fool's, NASCAR and Google have teamed up for a special announcement.

The Autonomous NASCAR Google stock car.

There's a video detailing it here with some funny comments from the drivers. :dopey: (I love hearing Keselowski's comments.

The reason I'm not sure if it's an April Fool's joke is Google has actually been working on that tech.
I mean, I know it's not serious going to compete, but they may be seriously doing this project as a sideshow for.. say.. Daytona?

I always like an April Fools joke that actually seems plausible.

It's from March 2011, so it's not just a video to help the joke.

Yeah, when he (Eric Schmidt, Google CEO) initially made the quote below, it actually caused a small uproar in the automotive world. I can't recall what was said now, as this was back in 2010 when it happened, but the way the media spun it, was that he was insulting early generations for creating the automobile, before we created the computer.

“It’s a bug that cars were invented before computers,”
Eric Schmidt, Google CEO

It was at some Technology convention, where Google had a presentation, and it was the... 'unveiling' I guess you would call it? of the self driving car. This was in Sept of 2010 according to Google. So while the NASCAR part maybe be an April Fools joke, the self driving car is not, in neither theory nor practice.

As a car enthusiast, it's hard to imaging not having the ability to go for a Sunday cruise. But from a political, humanitarian and safety standpoint, computer driven cars, would eliminate over 30,000 deaths a year. From an economic standpoint, consider how Auto Insurance would alter. Assume these computer cars will all be electric, and you see how gas becomes near obsolete, with that, consider how much pollution gets cut. When you take into account the possibility, that speed limits will no longer be of relevance, speeds can safely INcrease, without human error a possibility, travel times get dramatically reduced, especially on longer trips. Consider how much smoother traffic(looking at you Rush hour!) will flow, if it were entirely computer controlled.

Think about:
Never paying a traffic ticket again.
Never paying for a drop of gasoline.
Auto Insurance rates get cut by 75%. (Assuming you only need theft/damage/vandalism)
Rush Hour stress, with a nap.
Reducing the Earths carbon monoxide pollution by 60%.

I love driving... but at some point in the not so distant future, I doubt we'll legally be allowed to.

guys jimmie johnson has a plan and hes got a good car he wasnt going full throtle during practice and qualifying + if he has made it to 9th in sprint cup then hes got a very good chance of winning

Man, would I be scared if I had the 88 beneath me today. He is wiggling around on the low-line and definitely not afraid to nudge to win the spot.

As per this stickied thread at the top of the Motorsport subforum:

There have been a number of instances where members have written "I hope driver xxx crashes" or worse. I have seen many posts wishing physical harm and even death to be inflicted upon drivers or others involved in motorsport.

This is completely unacceptable

I have already stated this before, in another thread, but clearly the warning fell upon deaf ears, therefore it is being replicated in these threads.

The moderating staff understand that people have their favourites in motorsport, and that they might therefore wish the rivals of their favourites to undergo misfortune. Fair enough, but if we see any crash or physical harm being wished upon any participant in any form of motorsport, then we shall immediately issue an AUP violation infraction.

Guess Kurt's not the only Busch having issues today.

Broken track bar on Kyle's car, and Jimmie was too fast exiting pit road.
