My bro owned a WRX. Great car! Did not miss a heart beat. Treat it well and it'll show.

In terms of a price range of 20k. If your from Australia then a Integra Type R (DC2R) is well in your price range. You can probably pick up a mint one also. I'm also from Australia and also previously owned a Type R. Most reliable thing ever! Service it and I can guarantee you it will be very reliable! But Honda's are known for reliability so I dont need to tell you that.

It's nimble and quite fast! and also won't be illegal for you if your on your P's! In terms of insurance, well you want a sporty car so expect to pay a decent amount. Won't be anywhere near 3k but you can imagine it aint going to be anywhere near 500... haha.

Petrol it runs about 8.5-10/100kms! Depending on how you drive it but it can be the most fuel efficient thing. Obviously nothing compared to a yaris or a jazz but atleast the Type R has some balls :dopey:

Good luck on your search! I've been in the car market several times! Don't rush yourself. Find the right one and buy it! Don't settle for second best or you'll regret it :sly:

I asked about the problems with my sister's WRX. The really extra expensive thing was spare parts. Being an import, everything is like double or triple the price of other cars. She actually had an accident in hers, and needed a new rear wheel bearing. She got raped on price for it. Filters and everything are through the roof too.

WUT?

Foci ain't bad cars, just EXTREMELY cramped.

So avoid them.

Mazda 6i with a stick, 'nuff said. It'll make you happy. Plenty of room, quick enough, and not ugly by any stretch.

The new Focus wouldn't be cramped if not for one stupid little design element. They have this little flappy control for stereo volume control thing sticking out from the steering column. It's the stupidest thing ever, because in Australia at least, it's about 15cm from the centre console button that does the same thing. All it does in get in the road of your knee you use for the clutch. Th rest of the car is brilliant though, not cramped at all. They are painingly expensive for an XR5 Turbo though.
Did I say they were bad? I was recommending them, but the older models are less than inspriring and not so reliable, trust me, I work at Ford.

DC2's are a bit more than a couple of years old mate.

Can't say I like DC2s much, DC5s are much better looking.

Shouldn't be, I have bought many parts for imports (talking about factory imports like the WRX, 200SX etc) over the years and their prices are much comparable to local stuff. I have even bought many genuine parts for popular grey import cars (cars that were never were sold here) and most parts are reasonably priced. Due the large quantity of grey imports local genuine dealers stock all servicable parts for them and order in from Japan (5-7 days) at a good price.

Bearings, filters, belts etc are usually pretty cheap.

When buying from a import wrecker things like body and suspension parts can set you back quite a lot, as they charge what they want and there is demand.

Maybe in Melbourne they are more common and therefore cheaper? Up here they're not cheap.

They should be, I know atleast Nissan have a standard parts pricing Australia wide.

If we are talking about personal imported parts storesm, then yeah, prices vary dramatically.

Nd 4 Holden speed..

Do you when the new Fiesta is coming? i was thinking of buying the Feista XR4. though apparently a new model is coming out later this year?

Edit...
Seems the fiesta isnt coming until 2009... too far to wait.
Also looking at the Polo GTI, looks to be the class leader in hot hatches around the 25 - 30k mark.

I still don't get why the RAV4 is going...
It is on it's last legs?
Has it just outlived it's usefullness?
Are the 'rents getting rid of it because they don't like it?
Or do you just want a new car?

Rav4 is going beacuse its my mums car and she and dad split up.. so mum is taking it with her as she is moving out. So my hand is being forced to buy a car as i cant depend on using dads car as then he wont have a car... Before it worked cause we had 2 cars, but now with mum taking hers we will have 1 between dad and I.

So after a lot of thought and reading its come down to Polo GTI brand new with leather seats or a Ford Fiesta XR4.

I have some good contacts in wholesale car dealings so i should be able to pick up a new car for about the same price or close enough as the asking prices on a 1yr old private seller.

so any last opinions or what ever?

These cars are good on fuel, in my price range, good reviews and still nice to drive. bear in mind im 5'6 / 165cm so space isnt the biggest issue, and besides my dad owns a Mitsubishi Pajero 7 seater + a trailer, So anything requiring space would use that car. So its really just a car for me to get around in and stuff.

1) VW Polo GTI
2) Ford Fiesta XR4

Renault Clio 197 is bit too expensive as is a VW Golf GTI.

Arnt they 30k +?

A Polo GTI is $26,990 + $2400 for leather..
Fiesta XR4 is $24,990

I have almost 30k in the bank right now.. just waiting..

Astra is about 35 - 38k... Thats just too much.

Wanting to keep it close to 25k as possible hence the Polo GTI

I just went to the Holden site and built an SRi Astra Coupé with 1.8L 5spd manual for under $30k including options:
Licence plate frames $54.45 RRP*
Alloy wheel lock nuts $76.15 RRP*
Bonnet protector $97.90 RRP*
Headlamp guards $79.20 RRP*
Carpet floor mats (Set of 4) $82.50 RRP*
Tow bar and tongue kit (incl. harness & towball) $646.80 RRP

I was trying to find the 2.2L direct inject coupé but couldn't (we had one at our dealer as a used car the other day, might still have it). I can only assume you could easily afford a 2.2L DI Astra second hand, or any Astra second hand when this is the new car price.

Edit: That comes standard with leather etc. I just checked the 5 door hatch and it's the same price. I didn't think it would be as dear as a Commodore.

Well ive managed to get a WV Polo GTI Red with Black leather seats for $29,154 Drive away. Just got a few minor details to sort out but so far its looking very good.

Anyone own a VW Golf/ Polo or have any experience driving them?

Congrats Dion 👍

Make sure to post up some pics :)

Only thing I really know about the current Polo GTi is a house nearby has had one on the front lawn for about a year and a half with heavy front damage and they never do anything with it.

Congrats although I have my reservations about black leather or vinyl.

Too damn hot when the sun's out :dopey:

Good for you, but the Fiesta XR4 just won the sub $38k bang for buck 2008! Let's see some pics already.:D

Yes i read that article, however i belive the VW has a bit more refinement / saftey and for a bit extra is a better car to choose. Besides the XR4 scores so well cause its so cheap. Plus the polo wasnt even in that competition.

Anyway ive orderd the car and it will take ~10 days to get to brisbane, then i fly down pick it up and drive it home. I'll get some pics then for you guys!

You have to go to Brisbane for a VW dealer? Good luck with parts and warranty.

No, i have a local dealer but they ddint match the price, besides due to other factors its better to get it from brisbane then locally.

Here is what im getting, though mine will have black leather seats as well...

Of course if no logic was involved and it was just a 19yr old male in charge id have ended up with a V8 commodore. However considering you cant actually use cars like that to their limit anyway its kinda pointless, + fuel consumption + insurance + extra money... rah rah..

This i found was the best balance between a good reliable car that services my needs and yet is fun to drive and kinda sporty. Will do me excellently for a few years while being relativly cheap to run and being brand new, i have full warranty so shouldnt have to spend much on new parts, just servicing. Plus i got a great price on a new one, in fact in the trading post 1yr old models with low KM's and service history WITHOUT leather are going for just a few hundred less that what im paying for a brand new with leather...

So im looking forward to the car and i will post some of my own pics once i get delivery of it ~ week or so.
