Caffeine is actually a thermogenic chemical that will accelerate your metabolism. Fat burning pills are commonly caffeine/ephedrine stack, but ephedrine can kill you if you overheat your body while taking it.
Caffeine does not become thermogenic unless you take doses of over 400mg. (For the record: that's a LOT). Also, it increases your blood pressure and heart rate. So stay away from that crap (a cup of coffee or two won't hurt though). Ephedrine actually works, but is illegal in most countries, and with good reason. ;)

@Morrac32: Again: A lot of the advice is here comes with the best intentions (and you can't go wrong with any of them), but please, see a professional about this. We do not know your medical/physical/psychological condition, for all we know you have a thyroid disorder or other condition. If you want to succeed, don't wing it or just do something, take it on professionally. Oh, and don't mind that Anus guy above here. ;)

Pot belly, a pop belly is what happened when Britney ate the cake.

You'll have to excuse me, I've always said "pop" rather than "pot" because I find it more descriptive. Literally, my stomach looked like it was going to pop when I relaxed my stomach muscles.

I would like to thank all of you for the advice that you have given me. I appreciate it all (the Family Guy reference not so much but it doesn't bother me). One of the things I have always had on my side was that I really never cared what people thought about the way that I looked. Now that is not saying that I go out looking like someone who just rolled out of bed after an all-night bing, but if someone said something rude I just didn't let it bother me and kept going.

I will more-than-likely use this thread to record weight loss and such, mostly for my own use but also to keep all of you up to date so that maybe y'all can help me keep motivated and stuff.

Thanks again.

I use to exercise on a treadmill and a bike that sat infront of a PS2. Was always fun to do with a friend. But you cant play every game while running lol. I found the best game to play was FIFA. Sport games in general worked good. Racing games were playable but requred too much concentration. Shooters also were hard.

Once in a game of FIFA my friend scored in added time to win the game, jumped and when he landed he stumbled and fell, then the treadmill flung him off into the wall... Good times...

Anyone know of any snacks that are healthy for you but don't taste like cardboard (i.e. rice cakes)?

Taco-sized flour tortilla, 2 pieces of sliced turkey, a dab of honey mustard, and a little lettuce.

Takes 30 seconds to make and is about 150 calories.

How about diet-soda? I'm not severely overweight or anything, but I'm just tipping to overweight, and have been noticing a consistent growth in my tummy for the past two weeks. I drink a lot of soda, so I suppose that is what has caused my weight growth.

Diet Soda doesn't really help despite the lack of calories. Soda is Soda.

👍

If you check the packaging of most 'diet' products, they usually contain lots of fast sugars (which is worse than fat). They're not going to help you one bit; on the contrary, they're designed to keep you fat, so you keep buying 'em.

Well yes and no. Soda is generally bad for you, but some people it is a huge source of calories. Friend of mine lost 40lbs in about a year by switching to diet and adding in some regular exercise. That was about.

Results may vary :p

Simple carbs cause the body to send a signal to start storing fat, so if your body was burning it the process becomes basically undone.

I lost 20 pounds in a month from weight lifting. So purchasing a set of dumbells and working 20-30 minutes 4 or so times a week would be a great start. Its better then running or biking which helps but with weights your burning calories as your muscle grows. Drink lots of water and have small meals ever 3-4 hours like someone said earlier. This will boost your metabolism. After the first month or so you will feel a million times better and look better for your wifey. And we all know a happy wife is a happy family.

I can't believe how much people know about dieting ITT. I'm 26, 6 foot tall and weigh 80ish kilograms. It's really, really simple - don't overeat and exercise regularly. Don't count calories or anything like that. Have a peanut butter sandwich and a bottle of water and some fruit or something for luch. Anything more is overeating and not necessary.

I disagree 100%. The reason people are underweight or overweight is because they don't count calories.

If you dont count calories, you will have no idea if you are eating too much or too little. For someone that is obese, counting calories is VERY VERY VERY important. Even if you exercise, if you still take in more calories than you burn in a day you will still gain weight. Again, counting calories is VERY important.

The link in post #29 is guaranteed to help anyone lose weight. Every person that has tried it, has succeeded. And you get to play the PS3, 360, or watch movies while you lose weight. It really doenst get any easier than that.

Exactley what I was gonna say, it may not take fat off, but I'm pretty certain it won't add nearly as much as the 'full fat' versions.

In 2009 I went from 21st to 17.5st (294lb - 245lb) purely by going from normal Coca-Cola to Coke Zero and playing five-a-side football with work collegues for 4 hours a week. I'm 6ft 4in (194cms) and now weight in at 16 stone (224lb), meaning I've lost 70lb in two years. Further more, my muscle mass has improved and I feel alot more energetic and willingness to get outside, losing weight really is win win.

All I can say is best of luck, some great advice already on this thread, not much more for me to add. :)

Well I can assure you I've never counted calories in my life. It's mainly an american obsession too. I can't remember the last time I even heard the word calorie here in australia.

All I do is stay active by playing sports and swim in rough surf and I don't overeat. That's the key right there. I'm going to take a guess and say OP works in an office or behind a desk of some sort.

I also call shenanigans on these miracle weight loss programs and exercise machines. Push ups are great for upper body and cycling for cardio and lower body.

If you dont need to lose weight or gain weight then you dont need to count calories. (Anes, You are 6' and what about 170lbs? You are underweight and dont want to change your body so of course you dont count calories. lol)

You helped prove my point. Its simple math. And its not an American obsession. If you eat more calories than you burn in a day. You will gain weight. Thats the bottom line. There is no other magic to it AT ALL.

For people that are obese it is mandatory to count calories if you truly want to lose weight. If you want to lose weight, take in less calories than you burn each day. If you want to lose weight even faster, take in less calories per day AND exercise.

I think this will be one of the more important parts of your diet. Don't ever stop doing that.

Feeling that other people are following what you're doing will give you that extra motivation, and can make all the difference.

I agree. Keep us updated with your progress and use this as a notepad of your results per day or per week. And please take my advice and start counting your calories. It will help you more than you will ever realize. :)
I would also suggest to weigh yourself at least 1 time per week on the same day.

Different strokes for different folks. Not everyone has a metabolism like that, I can assure you. Hard to wrap your head around that, I know, as you are too busy trying to be witty and counter-culture.

Agreed, though I've never had to lose weight really, aside from 10 pounds I put on my first year at university. But basic exercise and a healthier diet just makes you feel better all around. I've changed my diet up a bit to cut out more ready made, less healthy foods in exchange for salads and proper meals with veggies this year, and I just feel more upbeat about everything.

He isn't underweight I'd say. I'm 6'4 and 180 pounds, and I'm certainly not underweight. Some people are just built different, and some of us just cannot bulk up in that way. When I was in really good shape, 6 pack, tone, and everything, I was 175 pounds and the same height. The extra 5 pounds is mostly just beer I think.

I am? I wasn't trying to be. Well you know best right..

Edit: @ Camaro, I'm not underweight. 80kg for my height is ideal.

The reason majority of people that are overweight are that way is they eat too much or eat too much of the wrong food. Some people have been brought up from childhood eating too much. Some people (like me) lack willpower when it comes to the wrong foods. Peoples metabolism can change as they get older too and so without changing diet much they add weight. Becoming less active but eating the same quantities will cause you to add kilos on.

Just saying eat less isn't going to fix it. Sure eating 1 piece of fried chicken is going to be better than eating 2 pieces but what counting calories can teach a person is that they can probably eat the same quantity of grilled chicken and a stack vegetables and it will be less calories than the fried option - this way they won't be hungry and less likely to binge later. Counting calories is a tool that can help a person to learn to choose the healthy options that will assist them in controlling their weight.

I am pretty sure I have lived in Australia longer than you and I can assure you the word calorie gets used a lot, as well as kilojoule which is the metric measure. It may not be something you discuss in your circle of friends but it sure as hell isn't just an American obsession.

Additionally, to chime in on the "no need to count calories" and the "need to count calories" mini-discussion, it sounds like Anes has a good start to his life by being active and burning off most of the calories that he consumes through his excerise.

The thing is, if Anes suddenly stops his excerise, then he's gonna get fat because he would be used to eating the amounts that he eats but not burning it all off.

I used to train 18 hours a week in swimming and hit the gym 3 times a week, all in the pursuit of speed and endurance for swimming competitively. This meant that I was constantly eating and snacking high calories and high carbohydrate food, alongside with massive portions of proteins (in comparison to a normal person). I'm 5ft 8in and was always about 60-65 kilos in racing trim. I had to stop doing all the heavy swimming and gym as I wanted to move on to doing something different as I realised that I was not able to achieve my goals that I wanted to.

This meant, for the first month after retiring from the heavy-ass training, I was still eating the same portions that I was while training! It took a long time until I finally adjusted to sensibly eating within my means and not going crazy.

The original poster could have been doing huge amount of excerise while at school or college and had a big injury that prevented him from having his excerise to burn off all the calories he ate. But of course, with a heavier weight, comes with a slower metabolism. This means that counting calories and knowing what each food does for you is the key to losing weight safety, responisibility and carefully.

@Submerged: You are right when I was in High School I played football (American Football) and we were in the gym and running every day. After I got hurt I really couldn't do anything (getting your knee blown out kinda does that to you) and I started getting used to be sedentary. Fortunately, my knee healed, mostly...if I play football and get hit too hard there again, that will not be good (also if I start lifting too much weight on it).

@Anes: You're right my job is a desk job, but it is doing what I like to do (Tech Support).

Anyway, I will be doing my first weight in Saturday and will start exercising then (right now trying to do some research and put together an exercise program for myself). I will let all of you know how it goes.

By the way, I don't have a scale at home but I do have a Wii and the Wii Fit "game" (I don't really consider this a game) and was wondering if y'all knew if the Wii Board was accurate at all concerning weight. I will probably go ahead and buy a scale just because but I was wondering if I could get an accurate weight on this thing.

Having both myself, I'll fire up Wii Fit and let you know how it does.

Good luck, Morrac32! 👍

Ok, I didn't read through all the strategies of other members, but here is mine :

Biggest advantage of my advise is, that you'll need very little motivation. But it'll cost you a few bucks and requires a little space in your home :

Buy a treadmill. Your weight mighty be a problem here, you'll have to buy a good one ( edit : I just realized, that 300 lbs are "only" 137 kg, so even mediocre treadmills should be able to handle that. Don't go too cheap though, 800 USD minimum ) I can recommend Horizon products. Get a good pair of running shoes ( go for the best, I use the Asics Gel Kinsei III ( I think ). Now the important part : Buy an HDTV, a 1080P upscaling DVD player and place them in front of the treadmill. Then buy a ( or several ) complete season (s) of a sitcom / science fiction series etc you like ( Sopranos, Startgate SG1, KoQ, Lost etc ) and from the day you have that setup, you'll only (!!!) watch these seasons when you are on that treadmill; No need to run, just walk in the beginning. 45 min each day, 6-7 days a week. In your case : after work, before dinner.

After a few weeks you might start running a few min and then walk again.

And for dinner, try low carb. Some chicken and salad. You can keep eating normal at breakfast and lunch, but try to avoid soft drinks ( Cola etc ), go for water or juice instead. And of course it would be great if you reduce burgers, doughnuts etc, but there is nothing wrong with eating some unhealthy food now and then. Otherwise you won't make it. Don't start counting calories or being hungry all day / before you go to bed. Just try to eat a little healthier, not necessarily less.

Believe me, walking / running while watching DVD seasons works perfectly, you need almost no motivation whatsoever, because rain, darkness, cold temperatures etc don't affect you at all and it is fun to watch TV. After a few months, walking / running almost every day will become your daily routine just as eating and sleeping.

I do it this way, I can only recommend it. We are talking about 1200$ - 2000$ here, but your health should be worth it, well, at least if can afford it.

( I use the Horizon Paragon S ( 1500 EUR ), a 37 " Toshiba FullHDTV and a Toshiba upscaling DVD player ; currently I watch Stargate Atlantis season 1-5 )

Also, since you start off slowly, I don't see a reason to consult a doctor as long as your body doesn't show and symptoms. Just walk slower or stop when you feel dizy, drink enough ( not just water, maybe mixed with juice ) and if your legs hurt : take a break.

Oh, and if possible, try to place the treadmill at a window. Open it while walking/running unless you live near a busy road, in that case it might be healthier to breathe the air of your apartment / house )

@ first bolded: Hah! Coincidence. Me too. ;D *internet high five*

@ second bolded: The best way I've found to control my weight has been weight lifting.

I too do the 40 hour workweek / marriage / kids thing. I used to stay parked at my desk on my lunch; I now use that time to go to the gym here at work.

Use the Google criteria:

5x5 rippetoe workout

and you'll get lots of returns. The 5x5 is the basic beginner's lifting routine, recommended by folks all over the place. Between that and improving your diet, you should see some good results within the first few months.

Lookin' forward to seeing your progress, man. :)
