Needs a good wheel to have ANY chance of winning hard races

Very interesting comments. I actually got ALL GOLD & 100% in GT4 using DS2. I think back & asked myself what was fun about. I can only say the fun part about it all was just racing with all the cars i have & with my own tuning setups. It doesn't feel fun getting the golds. I'd probably describe the feeling as..."yay, now i can brag". This doesn't actually equate to fun though. ^o^ And dudes, if you guys don't think i actually "think" before i type, then i "think" you're not actually understanding things from my perspective. Cool bananas i say!

I'm picking up my first wheel today, a DFGT. I've always used a ds3, so I could be a 'test subject.'

Enjoy! It will be very frustrating at first, stick with it. Once you're used to it you probably won't be much faster, that's mostly a myth invented by peoply who get beat or find the game too hard. But you will have a hell of a lot more fun once you're comfortable. Obviously different people are different so some will be helped more than others by a wheel, but as a rule it's pretty close. Some are even naturally better with a pad.

As for the leaderboards, the top is generally wheels, but whenever I've looked there were always several DS3 users in the top 50-100. And the top group are the most ridiculously talented and obsessed(fair is another debate LOL), so probably more likely to buy wheels anyway.

Yes I've noticed that in the leaderboards as well. I'm not sure what to attach my wheel to right now though, I'm thinking card table. I've only ever used a FFB 90 degree wheel, so I know the whole problem with crashing the first turn if you're trying to push. I'm gonna go on SSR7 to get used to it, then a smooth track, maybe Tsukuba, eventually on to Nordschliefe. I just got home with it, and even though it has no clutch, this will be fun.

I'm not flaming, don't think I am, but could you type the proper way? I'm not going to try to do anything, it's just annoying when I need to read something a few times to comprehend it. And if you want to take a risk, it's $160 for the Fanatec Carrera wheel, risk because the pedals don't always work. If you're fine without a clutch, the Logitech Driving Force GT is a 900 degree wheel with a sequential shifter. You can also use paddles.

Fixed your spelling as well. :)

OP, A pad is sometimes quicker I use both.

I know you are new to GTPlanet but don't talk in txt speak because it is hard for people who's first language is something other than english to understand you. Talk in gramatically correct sentences. Also the moderators will come after you.

yeh watch out for the grammar police

Why are you on here lol when did you play GT last?

@Mark, I'm ashamed :(

Wheel vs pad is a strange one, it depends on the car and track and driving style. in the NASCAR events or high speed cars at Spa I find the pad just can't keep up. But then at other tracks (eiger norwand?) I can run pretty much the same laptimes with the pad and wheel. When it comes to rallying and drifting I find the pad is better than the wheel.

The game works great with the pad, but even if it does you still need to be very skilled to pull off all the golds in the challenges, that is the point, same applies with a wheel.

Well I got 45 gold & 15 silver in the licenses so far. I know I'm NOT incompetent (like some jerk accused me off), but I find it more enjoyable to get all gold so I can get those prize cars & move onto other events. Going through the licenses & SOME of the Special Events feel like a chore only. It's more fun when there's racing involved.

I think it will be IMPOSSIBLE to get ALL GOLD & win the REALLY hard challenges.

Rubbish, I used DS3 and the only thing that's impossible with it is driving the X2010/X2011 and Formula Polyphony. Online I still manage to be competitive against the fastest guys from this forum, yes it may limit the extent of control you have of the car as it's hard to gage the button-pressure:steering-angle balance, but what i've found is that if you drive the car in a more relaxed manner and use your brakes without 'slamming' them then you should be fine. Braking should be used to balance the car as well as slowing it down.

Oh don't get me wrong. I understand what you mean. The hard part is doing it. As the saying goes, knowing how to do something is easy. The hard part is being able to do it.

Is it me or has anyone noticed how hard it is to get ALL Gold &/or win the EXTREMELY HARD challenges? GT5 & other racing games are NOT designed with this in mind. Don't the programmers realise there's a HUGE difference in using a PS3 controller to drive versus using a proper wheel? I think it will be IMPOSSIBLE to get ALL GOLD & win the REALLY hard challenges. I drive my REAL car better than this! lol Anyone hints, opinions?

Buy a wheel man. I know, why should we have to spend...etc.
I realized a long time ago to get the best out of GT you have to buy a good wheel. If we can manage $350 for a PS3, $60 for the game, why not spend another $100 on a Driving Force GT? I don't mean to sound harsh, it's just worth it.

i don't need a wheel. i am a proud user of a S3 with sensitivity set to 5-7.

And how does 45g/15s make you fast and worthy of all golds? I don't get it. :s
Licences mean nothing, I know people who got all golds and can't gold half of the events (which are very easy btw).
GT5 isn't like all the other GTs meaning that all cars are buyable (apart from X2010 S.Vettel, X2010 Prototype, 370Z GT Academy and GT-R SpecV GT Academy) so again golding's not the only way to go if you want all cars.

I didn't find the Vettel challenge very easy. Discipline and persistency brought home the gold. It would have been nice if they held a few coveted exclusives for gold winners. It's convienent to buy all the cars, but getting gold doesn't really do anything unless your just after platinum.

This!
Only X2010 Prototype which is the most overated car on GT5 and everyone who wanted it badly enough has it by now.

you even say yourself your memory is poop. I even remember in a rounge being like "hey i'm gonna get a new drift car, I'll find something"

wow I've been a part of these forums for a year and still says new member ahaha.

Because you rarely post.

Back on topic, this is only true where precision matters, and only true there when you can't precisely control a car with a DS3 (which I can pretty well) and you are great at using a wheel. I've noticed that with a wheel comes more fluidity, which can possible equal speed, but doesn't if you can do the same with a DS3 like some can.

Yeah I must say fluidity is the main thing.
